Kogalo in shock loss to City Stars

Collins Okoth in action against City Stars

Bottom club, Nairobi City Stars were the latest club to send shockwaves across the KPL when they surprised Kogalo 1-0 in a well attended match at the City Stadium on Saturday. Former Gor Mahia player, Jimmy Bageya scored the all important goal on 52 minutes to give the Kawangware side its first win of the season.

Kogalo fielded the same lineup that had beaten Mathare in the KPL Top 8 tourney last Wednesday.

New signing, Edwin Lavatsa almost gave Gor the lead after four minutes but his header missed the target by inches.

City StarsĀ  gained in confidence and George Odari’s fierce freekick hit the post on 20 minutes. On 52 minutes Bageya silenced the crowd with a clam finish.

Coach Zedekiah Otieno brought on Tony Onyango, Wycliffe Opondo and Ezekiel Odera to no avail.

Kogalo went on the attack but were stifled by the strong City Stars defence that belied their position at the bottom of the table.

Coach Zico blamed fatigue, saying that his team played 3 games in two weeks. But the question is, why did’nt he rest key players for the meaningless game against Mathare on Wednesday ?

I watched it; is this turning out to be the bogey team for Kogalo? Remember last season when we needed three points? They denied us!! But I think some of the boys looked a little tired Kevin and Collins Okoth were too tired, in fact the goal come from a Collin’s blunder due to tiredness. Wise was doing a good job on the day yet he was substituted, poor reading of the game.Lavatsa at his age is overworked. The only thing we can do is minimise losses in the first leg; but think carefully during the transfer window in June especially stiking, someone sharp to assist Lavatsa.

  • We have a technical problem here. most of our players upfront cannot endure 90 minutes (Kitawi, Kevin, Akumu)
Fielding – We need some consistency. Changing the backline leaving out Awilo,Wekesa and Musa out sick, to pull back Akumu in the defence could not hold together.
the subs were also not significantly impactfull. Wyclif has never changed a game for Gor.

Last word – The coach cntinue to change the team too often. May I ask a question, who are our first eleven?

this nsettled side has made it difficult for our good player and new signings to workd together and produce results. FANS if nothing changes, we cannot be top 8 by end of the season

  • Yes, the boys lost due to fatique. However, our coach Zico sometimes has to be blamed. Where are players like Duncan Owiti, Wekesa, Awilo etal? Our players were looking tired after midweek match against Mathare. This was the time to bring some fresh players back to the team. It is pity that we lost a game we should have won. We had several chances but there was no player to shoot at goal. The error on the goal scored was largely due to Masika poor and weak pass to Colo that was intercepted by City player.

The laughable question still goes to Zico. When will he settle in the first eleven team?

Lack of concentration, inaccurate passes and bored supporters costed as our game over the weekend. Infact the fans spend most of their time supporting Rangers that by the time our game started, they were already tired and what they afford was vulgar language and constant blames….

  • @ Omondi and Paul,i agree with you totally.Last week i complained of Zico’s fielding,it can just be summarized by one word – Pathetic.Wycliff Opondo doesn’t have the standards required to be a Gor player, the fact that he’s a nephew of Zico is what brought him to Kogalo from Chemelil. Can anyone compare him to Kiplagat? Why should you play Akumu out of position and leave Jakambare out of the bench? that is under utilizing our best player who is very good at starting attacks with sublime passes that can break even the most water tight defences.Where was Ocholla and Owiti? Why did he start with Kiplagat on the bench? Makori was visibly tired from the word go.Why did he bench Wekesa? Where was Ivan Anguyo? Owiti is our super Sub,he can change the game anytime anywhere.Kevo plays best from the wings, why deploy him in a central position? We have the depth in squad but the coach is letting us down by his suspect fielding. We are overworking Lavatsa and the young guy is going to burn out very soon.Odera looked sharp when he came in with a fighting spirit. At this rate, its just by sheer luck that we are still in top ten.Zico, please stop being arrogant and listen other people ideas.

Mama Maggie, yes fans can be bored, 6 games and how many goals? 4 goals as follows 0,1,1,1,1,0 for the six matches we have played and not by strikers except the one against Stima by Lavatsa, tells you a lot! Football is about scoring goals, good football may also give the fan some entertainment; there is none of these and so yes the fans can be bored. And I know them well, they may start quiting pole pole. In the first leg we still have Sofapaka, Tusker,AFC, Thika,Sony, Chemelil, Mathare,Congo, Bandari. As it is now lets not cheat ourselves, just try and minimise the losses but address the striking issue during the June transfer window, no jokes and if not you will see the team struggle and finish below number 10.

Ma fans, you r not helping Kogallo by bad mouthing the coach whenever we lose a match. You are counting all players in a squad of 30 players. Surely can all of them play in the same match. You have made enough noise about Kitawi, he was on the pitch on Saturday, did he make the difference you have been yawning for? By not having a first 11, it means the competition is very stiff in the team and all the players must work hard to earn a position on the starting team. Never again will players be fielded on the strength of their 2 years ago form. Technical bench, dont succumb to uncalled for demands by fans to field players who are not match-fit. Stick to discipline and professsionalism that a game of football demands. The same squad beat Mathare on Wednesday, no one raised a finger, now you are shouting yourselves hoarse. Pleasing fans will not be easy. Lets shift our focus to the next very tough away match in Thika. A tricky fixture indeed.

  • Yawa, we all saw it coming narrowest of victories, tactically below par, some players of questionable standards. However too lose against the bottom side and after Rangers had done us a favour against Sofapaka was not only a shock but Also an embrassment. As ave said b4 K’galo players and bench should know that because they are the best supported and loved team in the country perhaps East Africa, all opponent will always want and piece of their scalp. To avoid this they must seal all their games in the 1st 20min coz as time elapses these team wont surrender. On sato the team depressed / shamed us

U cant play on wed and again play with the same vigour on sato, eeeh it is hard. The players were visibly tired. We are suffering in the midfield, What is wrong with awilo, Musa, wekesa and Jakambare? Pulling akumu back to the defence creates a huge vacuum in the midfield. In the first leg the worst Gor should get out of these games is a draw, should things continue the way they are we might never see the title. June is a transfer period we need to get some tough guy to sit in the midfield during tough games. This is the last match we are loosing in such a silly manner Zico take care and make wise decisions concerning ur fielding every team wants to beat u and we wont take it lying down, HII NI TEAM KUBWA, no jokes!!!

  • Zico is national team coach, he need to build strenght around Daddy, Akumu, Gatuso (that will make Gor unbeatable in midfield) Eric Masika and Musa are already plating well (he should have an option when one is out)who he continue to coach at national level. 5 players in national team and you cant win matches?

Since we lack clear leader when Awilo is out and fact we loose or draw often when Awilo is out, he needs to think of developing confidence in the players collectively.

Zico should then focus on ensuring the team seetles. You cannot get players on transfer and fail to get the in the team when we are not even winning. this is the diliema for E Odera who I belief is a very good player running with the ball in space. WHETHER YOU BRING MORE PLAYERS DURING TRANSFER WINDOW OR NOT, first look at the GOR unit. Let not make gor a team which wastes players instead of developing their talent. YOU MAY BE SURPRISED IF NO GOOD PLAYER WILL WANT TO PLAY FOR GOR WHEN THEY LOOK AT DENNIS AND EZEKIEL

Final word to ZICO He needs to motivate his player. We are turning out to be paper tigers.

ODUOR12, even Asenal was humbled by tail enders West Brom. Sunderland has humilated Chelsea and Man U severally. I dont see anything strange in Gor losing to City Star. What it means is that there is no underdog in this league. All the 16 teams are strong. What then would you say about KCB beating Leopards and Gor beating KCB, yet Leopards beat Rangers who humilated Gor 3-0. We should appreciate the spirit of competition. We can win or lose but we cannot will all the times. Lets humble ourselves.

Lets face it. A team like Kogalo with so many national team players and so many high calibre players should not have lost two games so far to teams like Rangers and City Stars. These are teams full of scrubs.

Lets stop making excuses for Zico. He should not be fielding tired players. he should know better. That game against Mathare on wednesday was useless. He should have used it to give younger players experience and let the seniors rest for the league match. Zico is misusing Lavatsa and will soon burn him out. That boy will soon pick up an injury simply due to overplaying.

A team of Kogaloā€™s calibre should not be struggling to score goals. 4 goals in 6 matches ? Ghitu ghani hii ? The buck stops with Zico. Ever since he became coach, Kogalo struggles to score goals. Every game we win is 1-0. And we loose too often. I am afraid Zico may be out of his depth. Just look at the success Sammy Omollo has with Tusker. Every game they score at least 2 goals.

  • Albert Kosero (Kampala Branch)

Joe Riaga, why double speak. Are you guys – fans – not the ones who instigated Sammy Omollo’s sacking. There is absolutely no coach who will succeed in Gor because of interference from fans who know very little about the on goings in the club. Somebody like Sianga was bundled out of Gor because of fans yet he is credited for building the current team. Now I hear Lavasta is being over used. When he is left out, the same guys will critise and even demand for the sacking of the coach for leaving him out. What do you guys want? Let the technical bench do its bit. There is always a bad day in office even if you were to bring Wyane Roney or Fabrigas to play for Gor. Yours is to cheer the team.

  • Joe Riaga

Ours is not to cheer blindly. If not for fans, Raphael Auka would probably still be the coach.
When a coach runs out of ideas, its time for fans to speak up. Even in Bayern Muninch recently, coach Louis Van Gaal was forced out. Even though he won the league the previous year.
If Zico has no ideas how to rescuitate this team then fans have every right to speak up. Otherwise management will become copmplacent.
As for Lavatsa, he should not play more than 75 mins in every game. Zico should know who can handle fatigue and who cannot.
Losing games like these to bottom teams is unacceptable when Kogalo clearly has better players.
This is not just one bad day in office. This problem is systemic. Kogalo struggles to score goals. Iko kitu

Good people, have you taken time to get to know the going-ons in Kogallo’s camp especially training ground? Fans cannot demand for players who are not match fit to be fielded. Its outrageous. Satisfiying Kogallo fans is very very hard. Even if you bring Len Julians from the grave, fans will still have issues. Give the technical bench time. I pleaded with you the same way last year and I am doing the same this year. Give the technical team and the players time. Fans are putting unnecessary presssure onto the team. Patience ma fans!!!!!Results inakuja. League is tough as you can all see. Teams are winning and lossing. Its very normal. Why make a crisis where there is none.

@Kosero please take this seriously we are not in this to loose to mediocre teams period. Gone are the days when fans could not question what is wrong, it is with this same mentality that we have left our so called leaders to go bazak and think they are small gods, We have to cultivate the mentality of winning and consistency in mind of the coach and the players by demanding that they perform well. Hatutaki aibu ndogo ndogo! The coach complained that the players were tired, let me ask : Did he have to play the same squad that played on Sato? What has happened to the back four that Teddy has to come down to be a defender leaving a huge gap in the midfield?

    Reply
  • My good man Kosero, Remember the great Len Julians started with a relatively new team but being an excellent/ visionary coach produced results (both in terms of exciting play and goals) that are forever etched in our memories.Zico says fatigue cost us sato’s game, that’s laughable. The miracle boys of 1987 played in 3 tough competitions and won them all. They had to play mid-week and weekends, outside the country, league had more teams etc etc. My take on what’s happening here is all the other teams had 2 aims in KPL, win the league and beat K’galo (cos of their supporters) so they prepare extra for us.Also whatever fans demand Zico has the final and when results are mediocre then its kidi time(metaphorically speaking).Rangers and city stars came, saw and conquered, sad thing is their coached bragged they would b4 hand. How? Maybe they’ve read us like a book (Zico) and know him like the back of their hands

And I remember very well, Kogallo would always lose to a mediocre team in the name of Pan Paper season in season out with the same Len Julians. Why are we forgetting very fast. Hold on your horses ma fans. Some fans are saying they demand results. My question is, as who? I wonder whether they are contributing anything to the club to warrant the demands. Humble yourselves in victory and in times of loss. Gor will remain Gor with or without some unreasonable supporter. What make some fans think that they are more Gor fans than others? Football is business and I believe Zico has performance targets that he must meet to retain his position as a coach. Why dont we leave this task to the Office to deal with. I dont think any of you was consulted when he was being hired, therefore you should stop issuing unnecessary demands. I am sure we also dont know how and who pays him. Zico and the rest of the team, please stay focused and ignore some uncalled for comments appearing in this forum.

When you start asking what the fans contribute I think you have completely lost it because they do a lot; and when you say we were not consulted when the coach was being hired then we ask why was that so. I think you are on a lone mission, nobody supports you in this. Please just stop it. Results are a must for any coach worth his name.

We have targets this season. I have saved enough money to attend all Gor matches at the VIP stand at whatever price together with my better half. I have every right to demand for results, Kosero would u like to go to a restaurant that dont serve u well and are expensive? that is how i feel right now. If we want to win this league we cant afford to loose to nobody’s, when we question it is because we care and want to find out where the problem is. We should stop living in the past if we used to loose to minnows not anymore coz Gor ni Movement so let them play like one.

  • the problem here is Zico. Heard him say Gor has the best team. So we expect him to demonstrate this on the pitch otherwise he is sleeping on the Job. Those narrow wins at home are losses away, and mark me, we will languish at no 10 and everyone will be laughing at us. Zico must get results for his hungry fans. And it begins with inteligent team selection.

Zico is also a bad reader of his oponent just as he is unable to pick the best team from his “best team”. Lastly we go to stadium to watch a good match and not listen to Zico give his match preview on DSTV.

Coach – Give me these players and we will always do well

Awilo, Colins or Wekesa, Musa Mohamed, Eric Gatuso – Defensive Mid, Akumu Offensive, Kitawi (sub with Makori, Kip (sub with Kevin Omondi)Lavatsa (sub with Owiti or Ezekiel Odera. When a defender is injured or unavailable do not disrupt the mid field get a regular/seasoned defender who can speak and fit in the team immediatly.

Last year you had the same demands but then Zico and office ignored your demands and Gor ended in 2nd position. If you go to a restaurant that does not give you the kind of food you need you walk into the next available restaurant. Could those who are not satisfied with Gor move to Sofapaka or even Tusker. Gor will remain Gor with or without your support. Its high time we stopped putting unnecessary pressure on the club. Nobody agrees with you. That should tell you something about how invalid your comments are. Calm down and do a self reflection. You really think you are right and everryone else is wrong ?

Fans demand results. As someone said hapo juu, we are fans, not cheerleaders. There is no team on this planet where fans just sit back without demanding results. This is football and not hide and seek.

And management better be cognizant about fan demands. Coaches too. Kogalo fans have been known to forcibly remove coaches. It happened to Sianga, to Raphael Auka and hapo zamani to Bob Oyugi. Kogalo fans have been known to forcibly remove other officials as well.

There comes a time when a coach has outstayed his welcome. The onus is on Zico to prove that he has not outstayed his welcome. Kogalo can hire a coach from outside Kenya if need be. There are coaches in other African countries who can do well. We dont have to continue to suffer poor results when we have better players.

  • Mama Maggie just to address your concern. Sometimes the other game is as important if not more important than your team’s match. It was important for K’galo that Sofameow lose so as to give our team the chance to catch up,not the ideal situation that fans (apart from Kosero) our team want to be in, but it does happen.K’galo fans being alert to that fact had to encourage Rangers being sure that we would roll over City Stars. The first plan went according to the script but the second did not which perplexed the fans. Expect more of this when there’s a tight title race. But surely GM should not rely on other teams losing to win the title. That was the case last year and we ended up 2nd.
