Kogalo players in action as stars hold cranes

Two Gor Mahia players, Kevin Ochieng and Collins Okoth “Gattuso” were in action at Namboole stadium in Uganda as Kenya held Uganda scoreless in the last 2012 Africa nations cup qualifier. Kogalo coach Zedekiah Otieno “Zico” was in charge of stars. Defender Eric Masika was on the bench but did not see playing time. Both teams needed a win and hope that Angola loose in order to qualify.

In addition, there were other players with a Kogalo connection. Goalkeeper Arnold Origi who was arguably man of the match, is the son of Kogalo legend Austin Oduor Origi “Makamu”. Some of you will remember that Austin, started as a midfielder, later played sweeper and on at least two occasions during friendly ,matches, played goalkeeper. And he was a highly competent goalkeeper. As a man marker , “Makamu” was second to none. Stars fans will remember the marking job he did on Liberian legend George Weah during a nations cup qualifier in 1989. Perhaps Makamu’s most memorable moment in a stars uniform was when his orthodox scissors kick prevented a goalbound shot with the keeper well beaten when Kenya played Cameroun at the 1988 Africa nations cup. So it is no surprise that his son has the same defensive skills.

Dennis Oliech is the brother to the free scoring Steve Okumu who played for Kogalo in 1994 and Andrew Oyombe who played for Kogalo in 2006. Oliech has appeared in a friendly match for Kogalo before.

Matchwise, Uganda dominated. Origi made several spectacular saves to deny the Ugandans who were looking to qualify for the nations cup for the first time since 1978 when they reached the final while parading Ugandan legend of Kenyan origin, Philip Omondi.  Omondi whose roots are in the Seme area of Kisumu is to this day considered the best striker Uganda has ever produced and was top scorer at the 1978 Africa nations cup.

Failing to qualify will be yet more bad news for Kenyan fans who have been eager to see the golden generation of Oliech and Mariga parlay their skills at the top continental showcase. Next up is a decision by the Harambee stars management board on the fate of coach Zico, something that is eagerly awaited by Kogalo fans and stars fans.

Pliz reward Ziko’s patriotism by giving him the stars contract so that he can leave GM

Administrator please note that the mention of Austin Makamu fills my eyes with tears. One wonders where we shall ever get such a soccer great. Age is a very bad thing. Were it possible to buy youth I would purchase it just for Makamu.

    Kudos to his son, Arnold.

AFC flew to Msa and beat Congo and are flying back “home” tonight. The weather in Msa was awful for Congo but favoured the spotted cat who is much at home in such Nairobi-like conditions (rainy and wet the whole day).

One AFC official who traveled with the team has intimated to me that they want to put beyond doubt the 3-0 hiding they handed us last Sunday. To put it in his own words: “they will confirm their dominance over us on Wednesday”.

I invoke the spirit of “Mahia” to awaken.

I wish on the onset to salute Arnold Otieno ( as often refered by that Uganda commentator) for his daring saves and patriotic duty. Wearing a national team jersey is a high honor and Arnold defended the dignity of this nation courageously and deserves my commendation.

The inclusion of two GM in the starting eleven was not a priviledge but a right which the two lads deserved like every other talented players. But this way below the standard set by Gor many years ago, when 9 of them were included in the team that played and lifted the regional trophy.

Finally it is now official. GM are going to meet again with their arch rivals, AFC Leopards in the semi finals of the FKL cup. Goodridance !

  • Our players need to be psyched for the wednesday game. It’s our duty as fans to offer what we do best. Moral support. Let’s forget all our shortcomings for the next one month and revive the issues once the season ends. I hope we can hold our horses on these issues as we cannot get a solution with the short time remaining. Let’s accord all our dear support. Including the coach and the chair else we will be humiliated again on Wednesday. For my country and club

ONE THING THAT Ug did very well was to study the kenyans way of playing very well. they knew that Kenyans are very gud at keeping the ball on the ground and dribbling so they watered the pitch esp in the middle area and made it very difficult to bribble n pass the ball on. they made sure the wing area which they were going to use was not as wet as the mid area.
they also knew that Zico is good at using wing attacks and to that LOCKED THE WING AND planted 2 pple on Mariga and 2 on oliech and 1 on the rest.
they used speed which made our players look unfit.

this are the same things that opponents have been doing against kogalo.

in my honest opinion,i tyhink we need to improve the qulity of the technical bench cz ZICO was a defender, MUSA was a defender, i dont know waht position Saleh played but at a preview u will notice it is not the balanced. during kimanzi’s time,we had nandwa-striker, juma- midfielder and kimanzi a defender.

defensively Gor is gud but we really struggle going forward at times. what we therefore need at Gor is a gud balanced bench probably get someone like Ogada dan to be an assistant plus a former shrp striker who is a good coach as another asst. thats the norm even in europe. get pro to work on his badges thenand give him the youth team,i still believe he can the (pep) Gurdiola for kogalo. kwa hay machache, lets talk football.

Collins Okebe and Omondi, u have provided too much comedy today, i’ve really laughed, needed something like that after lots of frustrations with Kogalo and Harambee stars. Osaka, u’ve capped it all. We hope and pray that either Zico is kicked out all together or given the Stars job, just to bring back sanity to beloved Kogalo. I hear he signed his new contract with Harambee Stars Management Board last week, handed to him by Kidero at EK Centre. If only this could be true, that could be the best news ever. The search for a new coach for Kogalo begins now…..

  • What we should pray for is ZD to get the Stars job and the assistant to a foreign coach. After all that is the summit of the coaching job within the country. And I believe with the right support from the board and govt he can deliver. Let’s also wish him the best since you never know and we might need him one day. Despite all the shortcomings I still believe he delivered his best only that with our demanding fans it was never enough. Curiously he is supported by all the coaches and it might mean that we are an intolerant and impatient lot. It might also be the first time in a long time that we had a single coach the whole season. I wonder if the later is a statistic to be proud of. Now that elections are on early next year, the club is broke and performance and confidence are at an all-time low this is the time for those with ambitions of transforming the team into another TP Mazembe to come out.

@omondi that was so funny. had me laughing in the office like you know what ati to quote you…… “anachukua makori, makori inje. mpira wa kurushwa. anarusha mbele. inje tena” hehehehehehehe. Hey guys my prayer is we win this coming game against AFC someone could almost think all the scribes are AFC fans coz the thing is quoted like every other day yawa aooooool. Players see how you did cause harm to me. The ball is in your court coz with that game Zico was not the problem you were the problem letting in easy goals.

Thank you very much Origi for work well done in Uganda. Your dad also made us proud during his days. One caution to Gor fans. Please do not rush at zico even Arsenal are still maintaining Wenger despite being beaten by Man U several goals sometimes back. Please give the coach easy time.
