KPL bleeding Gor Mahia dry

Gor Mahia officials have once again expressed concern over the prevalence of double and triple headers at the club’s home games. Since Gor Mahia is the primary crowd puller, responsible for almost 50% of the fans who attend KPL matches, the club will always end up loosing financially whenever there is a double header.

According to Michezoafrika.com, alternating league matches especially double/triple headers involving their club to ensure all teams get a balanced featuring on the double headers. The club has also urged KPL to consider putting them as an away team during these double header matches instead of always having them as the home team and further requested KPL to slot other teams like City Stars and Tusker FC in the earlier double header matches instead of the repeated appearance of Mathare United, Sofapaka and KCB.

In some cases, the club is featuring in double headers at the City stadium while Nyayo and Kasarani are going idle. It is not clear why teams like KCB and Mathare cannot utilize Kasarani especially when you consider the proximity of KCB headquarters and the proximity of Mathare to Kasarani.

And now that Dr Evans Kidero has been elected governor, perhaps the football fraternity can prevail upon him to refurbish Woodley grounds as the previous Nairobi town clerk Philip Kisia had promised. Remember Woodley used to host national league matches during the 1980s. A stadium like Woodley if refurbished and well maintained can sustain itself financially by hosting football games, gospel crusades and even rugby matches. Rememeber rugby is no longer a sport for the elite only. And given how densely populated the area is, Woodley can draw huge crowds.

The ‘community’ (EC) is justified to raise such concern moreso if it considered that we are a self-supporting community club that relies on gate revenue to pay players’ bonuses and allowances. What I am not sure of is whether anyone in TPL organizing committee will listen.

May I suggest that the only fair and just solution to double headers is to share the collections proportionately based on what each home team collects on any day that there is no double header. If Sofapaka raises an average of 15,000/- in their home matches it is inconceivable how and why they should divide the funds evenly with Gor Mahia on a day when both teams are the home teams and 3,000,000/- is collected. I believe that a team’s gate collections is directly proportional to its fan base and there is no way fans can suddenly appear from nowhere to support a team that has always attracted lean following.

So many teams have taken piggy rides on our back for long. If this system is adapted then teams like the slum boys will start earning what is rightfully theirs on any day that they share double headers with us. It is about time that teams stopped reaping where they did not sow. EC please deliberate on this and sensitize TPL organizers and FKF.

Let the shares be pegged on what each team raises when it is the sole host.

That is very true @BB the other day a double header pitting citistars/sofapaka n AFC/tusker had the teams share the gate collections yet citystars home games outside Kawangware raises not more than 200 fans, the parties concerned need to deliberate on this issue and come up with a lasting solution.

What kpl is doing to Gor on double headers is robbery without violence.

  • I think the solution to these double headers is to make sure that AFC and Gor are the away teams on those fixtures. Tha way we can ensure that the Gor/AFC fans will have value for their money and at the same time those other teams will also benefit financially. To me it’s as simple as that.
Gor and AFC being the home teams then they should play on a single fixture

The complain is justified and very relevant, remember in some countries/leagues TV revenue is shared proportionately to fan base. Surely as much as we have our shortcomings within our management ranks, the EC deserves support on this.

Without justifying hooliganism, its worth noting that silence to these important issues on the part of KPL management are some of the causes of unrest and irresponsibility from our unreasoning part of fans.

I really feel the issue should be addressed as a matter of urgency, i never knew the gate collections are shared equally whence its a known fact that GM & AFC actually are monopolies regarding football fans in this country. In a country ranking highly on corruption you may be surprised to discover some shadowy hands working maliciously to orchestrate these schemes to get a cut.

If i may ask, at times that Nyayo or Kasarani stadia are free, why couldn’t the EC switch GM matches to these stadia instead of waiting to cry over sharing of the hard earned funds?

  • @Kassam, the revenue is not shared equally but on a 75-25 ratio in favour of Gor. But this is still skewed against Gor sincve on a normal day these other teams do not even raise anything above 50,000/-

this shows we have no long term solution, though we are justified, we need to plan. the day we will have our own stadia, then we will reap big. renovating Rugby pitch along ngong road took a few millions and it changed face. the steps to having a stadia in say 10 years coming starts now, not verbally but action. back to football, the coach needs to know how a midfield should anchor play, train them to be clinical with the ball, pin point passes, to reduce work load on strikers. see how barca were demolished, it was midfield, falling back with ball the when they loose and becoming 1st line of attack when they have ball, hence barca couldn’t mark them.

Dan@6….correction,other teams cannot even raise more than 10,000 kshs.Look at the 1st Top 8 game between Sofa and thika, they raised 9,600 kshs. Its pretty obvious which team raises the highest amount game after game…

Abok your point about long term planning is very valid. Our officials just talk yet we do not even have an asset base. I still wonder what happened to the land given to Gor Mahia at Embakassi

Admin, what do you mean by KPL bleeding Gor dry? You must improve your english bwana! We spend a lot of money browsing on this site and therefore we expect value for our money.

We expect you guys to post timely, relevant, accurate and factual topical issues. It should be freely flowing language devoid of unnecessary grammatical mistakes.

Turning on the issue at hand, it is true clubs especially those without fans are clandestingly benefitting from us. It is a well calculated move involving a few club officials and the Tusker Premier League administrators. The agitation by our officials may not have much impact considering the skewed representation at the TPL executive board.

Instead, I concur completely with one who suggested that the only way out of this quagmire is to have a stadium of our own. We can use our fan base numerical strength to our advantage. Besides we can also collect revenue from other clubs, rental fee and now, the naming rights fee. The talk of stadium on this club has been on the lips of most Gor Fans for many years now. And if my memory serves me right, the current chai Ambrose Rachier was re- elected overwhelmingly because of this particular pledge to the delegates and indeed the entire Gor Mahia fraternity.

Let us not always pass the buck. The responsibility squarely lies on the men and womanwe elected into office. Gor Mahia as one of the community clubs in Kenya is in dire need of a new breed of leaders to take it to the next level of development. There is no need of pointing out a problem and fail to find a proper and long lasting diagnosis. The allegations therefore that KPL is bleeding Gor dry has merit but what it lacks the will and courage to nip the problem from the bud.

Teams with no support base are now taking advantage of Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards on these double headers. This has to stop immediately.

In a broader way it could also lead to theft due to lack of accountablity. This is because there is no clear person in charge of gate collections and therefore any amount is acceptable. I won’t be surprised to hear that total amount collected in one double header is only 400,000/- and you cant hold anyone accountable since we have so many vested interests.

  • The executive community please address all the issues comprehensively:
1.Why does GMFC pay 20% of gate collections to the stadium management when other clubs pay a fixed sum of Kshs.25,000.00
2.Is the EC so toothless as to have no say on match fixtures. I thought these were released/discussed b4 the season commenced. FIXTURES SHOULD BE ACCOMPANIED BY VENUES.WHY COMPLAIN NOW.
3.Corruption at the gate by EC, is a much bigger problem and
4.WHY THE SILENCE/SECRECY ON GATE COLLECTIONS PARTICULARLY SINCE NYAMWEYA & CO TOOK OVER.
5.LOGARUSIC IS A GOOD ADMINISTRATOR BUT IS NOT TOP NOTCH TACTICALLY.WE HAVE TO BEAR WITH HIM BCOZ WITHOUT HIM THE COMMUNITY AS COMPOSED WOULD TAKE K’GALO TO THE DOGS. FANS PRESSURE IS WHAT IS SUSTAINING GMFC.

1.Referees in Kenya no doubt are a major factor in the resulting crowd violence. In Gor Vs Sony, TV footage shows Kasaya clearly punching a K’galo player.
While in AFC vs Tusker, the tusker midfielder instead of being given a penalty after being fouled in the box in instead yellow carded. Were this an AFC or K’galo player their fans would have “reacted”
2.Shame of Nyamweya / FKL for trying to wash their hands off the Mombasa referee’s assualt case? That FKF is not in charge of stadium security

About double headers, dont u pple know that kpl CEO Jack oguda has never liked Gor and will never like Gor and he will do anything in his power to bring Gor down. All these double/tripple headers are his creations and he did them purposely to deny Gor much needed revenue so that we can have players missing on their bonuses so as to interfere with their perfomance.I am sure that he will be happy when Gor is strugling to pay even the T.B & according to him Mathare united is bigger than GMFC

    Reply
  • @Michael Odhiambo, you are wrong on Oguda favouring Gor since even AFC feels the same way you do. From what I know is that it’s SS who prefer the double headers since marketing is an integral part of what they do. From observations only Gor and AFC matches draw crowds e.g. Tusker and Mathare top 8 match drew only paying 124 fans paying 17,000 KES. That is a marketing disaster and that’s why Gor and AFC are drawn into double headers. For the benefit of both football fans and SS, and even the other teams, Gor and AFC can be the away teams during these double headers. In that case the fans will have double treat for the price of one, SS will have a stadium filled to capacity, the marketeers will have a field day and in the end everyone will go home happy. After all the Gor?AFC fans would still go to support their team even if they are the away teams. Unless you can prove where Jack has been against Gor let’s appraise him for the professional way soccer is currently being run in the country. Wait for the FKF cup and you will know how soccer should not be run. Already clubs have nothing to do this weekend because it was a FKF cup fixture weekend. Some of the things our ‘fans’ do if TPL was to follow the rule book we would be playing continously without fans (closed doors) and getting docked points left right and centre.

@Dan,I just wish u knew Jack Oguda well.SS do not prepare fixtures and ss is not kpl and will never dictate to kpl on how they should prepare there fixtures. So even if Oguda is your friend am sure that u know that he has never liked Gor. And be informed that it is only Gor & Afc who have made the kpl to be competitive and lively and not the management skills of that your Oguda. Remember when Gor and Afc were strugling when that Oguda of yours was CEO of mathare utd, nobody even thought of league.

If that Oguda of yours was indeed trying to improve kenyan soccer then he should be working towards imroving these two old giants teams to go back to their original positions in Africa and the world but not equating Gor with the likes of emerging powers like Sofapaka and Mathare utd.Big Tteams depend on gate collections & the moment you interfere with that then you r in essence killing those teams.if you wanted me tell u how Oguda hates gor then I think u can ask him bcos he is ua friend.
