Leopards pip Gor Mahia to win GoTV Shield

courtesy of the Nation

AFC Leopards have been crowned champions of the Football Kenya Federation GOtv Shield after beating Gor Mahia 1-0 in the final on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Peter Opiyo scored the all-important goal as Ingwe celebrated their cup success in style against the Kenyan Premier League champions. Leopards’ fans invaded the pitch after the final whistle as Gor Mahia fans watched from the stands in disbelief.

It was fast-paced game, one that brought together the two most successful clubs in Kenyan football.

LAST MEETING

Since 1991, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards had not met in the final of a domestic cup competition.

Gor Mahia were still enjoying their first success in the Kenyan Premier League after 18 years, having last won the league title in 1995. And they were seeking a double on Sunday, their first since 1987 when they also lifted the Africa Cup Winners Cup.

Gor Mahia dominated the first-half, pinning AFC Leopards in their own half. Dan Serunkuma, the chief assassin whenever AFC Leopards play Gor Mahia, tormented Leopards’ defence, but failed to make an impact.

FIRST-HALF

After a barren first-half, AFC Leopards broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second-half when Noah Wafula beat Musa Mohammed on the left flank then angled a pass that met Peter Opiyo who tapped home.

Opiyo’s goal came against the run of play as Gor Mahia had enjoyed possession but they lacked the cutting edge.

Coach Bobby Williamson made quick changes in the second-half, introducing Paul Kiongera for Anthony Akumu, Kevin Omondi for Joseph Wanyonyi and Edwin Lavatsa for Innocent Mutiso.

The changes brought some punch in the K’ogalo attack, but Gor did not find a way past the organised Leopards defence, marshalled by Augustine Etemesi, Anthony Kimani, Jackson Saleh and Abdalla Juma.

Gor’s Dan Serunkuma found the going tough as he had no shot on target, with the rest of the strikers looking lost in the game as Leopards held on to the lead.

Leopards started chanting towards the 90th minute and with Gor Mahia struggling, it was clear where the trophy was headed. Gor’s last effort was a corner kick which AFC easily dealt with and when referee Davies Omweno sounded the final whistle, Ingwe celebrated their first victory over Gor in two years when it mattered most, in the final of the domestic cup.

Their fans thronged the pitch after the final whistle to celebrate the famous victory.

Gor Mahia had dominated the competition, beating Sofapaka in the last two editions and it took a good game plan from AFC Leopards who have been in fine form since the arrival of coach James Nandwa. They defended resolutely and their attack was with purpose.

“It is my greatest day as a football coach,” said AFC Leopards coach James Nandwa. “I have achieved part of the job I set out to accomplish.”

AFC Leopards will represent Kenya in the CAF Confederations Cup as Gor Mahia carry the country’s flag in the CAF Champions League.

3 consequtive competitive games without a goal…it appears our midfield and strike force is dead! We have all along suspected but today it was all evident. Am not whether it is the coach or the players that lost today but trust me this team will not go far.. .its time to make changes

Congratulations to Ingwe. We lost via an own goal but a goal is a goal.I am glad that community football is back with a bang, and am rubbing my hands in glee at the prospect a fierce TPL next season. It was a closely fought encounter that could have gone either way.Leopards were inclined to win this one to prove a point.First, they were on a revenge mission. Two,they badly wanted to assuage the pain of that Flava’s goal in the first leg.Of the two teams Ingwe were more motivated and well drilled for this encounter.I said it here last week that our boys were in celebratory mode and it would be an herculean job to reconditon them for this final.I’m,nevertheless, grateful to them for a job well done the whole season. They may have been average at times but an average team that piped startuded sides like Tusker,Leopards and Sofapaka to the title must truly be a great average outfit.Aluta continua.

We had the opportunity to win a double this season but all was blown up in smoke the moment we were declared TPL winners through unnecessary celebrations.
This players got contented with that one title and they simply switched off. Bringing back their winning mentality will take a bit of time and this calls for patience.

Today it was so clear, ingwe’s midfield was more superior and this was evident in the second half. Even the three subs made by coach BW did not provide the remedy.
Bravo ingwe, you executed it well and got a way with the win, congrats!

In my opinion if we could have scored two goals in that game, a thing that was very possible, the comments here would have been “what a great team we have”. But that did not happen today because we were not lucky. The fact is that we have played the way we played today the whole season and we were always lucky to carry the day and we won the league 10pts clear.
The fact is thaat we strugged the whole season despite having great players, now is the opportunity to re-build the team and as I said before, it will be painful to see some of our best players go but that must happen for the team to move on.
AFC won the derby because it was their day, it happens in every derby and does not mean that the opponent is weak. When Real Madrid beats Barcelona, or Chelsea beats Man U it simply mean that the winner was the lucky one. Let us thank God for the Success of this Season, we won it after 18 years and ask God to Bless us with best players and technical bench this coming year. Kogallo Forever!!!!!

  • Guys, this has been a great season for both ingwe and Kogalo with each team winning a title and being runners up in the other. For Kenya to do well in either the African Cup of Nations and/or the world cup campaigns, then these two teams will need to do well at both the national level and continental level. The way AFC and Gor perform, So does Harambee Stars. Im therefore urging both teams to focus like a laser on the continental assignments next year.

Guys, now that the season is over, I’m signing off for the year. May you have a Merry Christmass and a happy new year. For those in the states I say Happy Thanksgiving. I will be back next year

Today’s game was my measuring of BW’s worth. I believe the TPL title was Loga’s work, this is wat BW started but he couldn’t finish it. Today poor fielding costed him, since wen did Akumu play behind the striker with Kevo on the bench? Oduor12, am in agreement with u, I doubt if BW will match da standard Zdravko Logarusic left at Gor. His style of play has rendered our short striker useless. How do u supply Sserunkuma with long balls given his height. With proper fielding, we would have beaten Afc n killed the game in the first half. Oboya, Kiongera n Lavatsa at least one or two would have started the game. Wanyonyi was not good today, Akumu was given a wrong role today. Zdravko logarusic u did a good job n I don’t think BW will match u at all

Over celebrations and no focus. Let us continue with over celebrations!!! Let us continue with visiting offices!!!! Let us continue with visiting parliament and upper chamber (senate)!! All these intentions were right but timing was questionable and wrong.

Where are the noise makers on over celebrations?

I’m very happy and excited that Ingwe defeated Gor Mahia. Congrats to AFC Leopards for the wonderful masterpiece goal.

The match was well attended and congrats to Gor Mahia fans that fully occupied all their zones. This is a testament that Gor Mahia fans are really passionate about our team.

On forthcoming recruitment exercise, the technical bench need to work on strengthening of the midfield (offensive and holding midfielder), striking force and defence.

Boys well done for winning the league. On todays game and many other i have observed our weakest link has been the midfield and left back. Akumu and Erick are always outmuscled to make it worse they cannot defend when we lose the ball. I cannot blame our strikers rather i blame the pack at the center. On the left back musa was forced into that position and beating him has become so easy. To make things worse we sold Juma who was a natural number 3. Indeed Bobby you have a chance to redeem urself by weeding out dead wood and sign better players. Better now than be sorry come next season. Remember next season every team will rebuild so dont sleep.

##############The midfield is the problem in gor mahia magwar our players played very well but midfield a big noo…we have some jokers in gor mahia and i was just waiting for the league to be over and today i will not shy off from mentioning names,Firstly there is no way a player can be named a midfielder of the year and within months he is nowhere to be seen,in this case am talking about Akumu who was really good last year and right know cant even make accurate passes.A nother one is daddy ….These players specifically must change their habbits if they want to prosper in soccer .Otherwise hands up for our defence line calabar, emuge, mosoti, musa and our lone striker Danny sserenkuma this guy has fought for the team.@ magwar you have to know that logarusic you are talking about could have not achieved anything this year since his tactics had been known by kenyan coaches and even himself he knew, that is why he went before a beating.

I agree with most comments here. I fully blame the midfield and surely Gor has just been winning due to the massive support from its legion adherents. I don’t want to be harsh with everyone, but the mid field is dead and I don’t see any sign of improvement. The defenders get alot of pressure because the midfield cannot hold. BW william is also not impressive at all. How can you let a player who is wasteful to continue in the play even for 20mns. This squad should not be allowed go continental.Akumu, always the biggest culprit. Danny cannot do it alone. BW has not noticed that some players run with the ball and cannot think at the same moment.

I want to congratulate the boys hugely, they did a good job,out played the winners and lost many scoring opportunities and Jakoyo has no business being so harsh, this was a fifty-fifty game. Suppose they had won? AFC only created that one half chance which they utilized. You saw Efusi had come with the idea of long passes to Were and Wafula on the wings in the opening minutes in search of an early goal but once these were contained they were nowhere.I had always expected that Wafula, Were and Opiyo would be the tormentors and they did though Were game was thwarted.

That one gisekawo so we move on and congratulations Ingwe at last you have something to write home about after many years.

But one question bothered me.Bobby W and Bobby O you saw that in a game like this you do not take chances? You saw that Nandwa selected the very best eleven to start the game.I doubt that you had your best eleven in the first about 60 minutes of the game, that is why you had to bring on three substitutions in quick successions.Never gamble in a game like this.

Our players lost focus emidiately we were decleared champions. It was very painful loose to Ingwe yesterday. Ingwe was more supperior to us. If we are to continue this way, then next year we are going nowhere. When we lost to kcb in the league, it was attributed to fatigue and we hoped things would improved, the way we played yesterday was no different. Our next game is against Tusker in Dec. All the best Kogalo!!

I totally blame our loss to inept office who have got nothing to offer apart from show piece and arranging for unnecessary celebrations before the final game against Ingwe.

We need to replace all these officials safe from the Chairman Ambrose Rachier. The rest of the officials should be voted out regardless of whether they ferry their supporters that have never watched any single Gor Mahia match.

It seems most of the guys commenting here never watched the match or are too emotional about the defeat to Afc. As a sofaset branch membeq, I had the opportunity to watch the replays as the game went on. It’s a big lie that Afc dorminated the match. Gor had the bulk of the possession and more chances that Afc. The luck was not ours.
When we won against sofapaka who dominated the whole match no one complained. Now that Afc got one chance get the win, we are up in arms. We’ve to be fair even to our players.
All alonh i’ve complained of Lavatsa and K. Omondi, who according to me have stagnated in their careers. They are just shodows of themselves afew years ago. They cant play in any position to perfection, they are neither wingers nor strikers. It’s high time we let kevo go back to fisa academy and learn how to play like a man. As for lavatsa, he can go out on a season long loan at either kcb or city stars.

  • I wouldn’t blame anyone for AFC’s win. This is soccer.

My only worry is on goal keeping. While we are trying to beef up our squad, it looks like Mapunda has already left. Anyone with more info?

The game was a very good wake up call as we prepare for Africa. I said when we lost to Tusker that it was a wake up call that would give us the league and likewise, the derby should help us do better in Africa.

Looking forward to proper and only necessary recruitment.

Congratulations are in order for Ingwe. In a derby game they got one channe and utilised it. That’s how derbys are won or lost. As almost everyone has said our weakest link is the midfield. We miss someone the calibre of Chrispin Olando to literally ‘fight for the balls in the midfield’ though Eric actually tries his best though he is guilty of carrying the ball too much at times. On striking we must get an out and out striker the caliber of former Dawo to fight for the fifty fifty balls after which Danny because of his height can pick up the loose balls anf finish off. Our defence was basically stable but we had to watch for cross balls which eventually felled us.
On Loga, we all know that he was struggling seriously before he left and as they say a change is as good as a rest and that’s what BW offered us. My only concern yestterday was that Wanyonyi and Wiper were off the game and took long to sub them for experienced players. I believe getting Lavatsa, Daady and Kiongera in time would have san=ved the game for us.
On fans I was impressed by how we filled the stadium, how we applauded the team after the final whistle despite losing but was dissapointed by those who were spoiling for a chaotic end. Washindwe. It’s a fact that majority fans are for peacefull environment but the few are spoiling our day.
Now as we prepare for the Dec 14th DSTv cup we can start the recruitment and spotlighting of the players to be recruited. Otherwise we have a challenge ahead and I believe BW is upto the task

Mcosweto I also had the chance to watch this game at home, and am with you that the boys played very well, actually one of their best displays lately. The fluke goal that Efusi scored is not all that was in that match and cannot be used to evaluate performance here. I do not know how other people analyze matches, it is either you win or you have not played! That mentality that we must win all the time must be discarded, this is what drives people mad when we lose.

@Dan, I really feel sorry fr what happened to you. One thing is now obvious , we cannot police our stadia. The whole week we were told how tight the security will be and fans will be frisked on the outer perimeter. We were even told that there will be a buffer zone for the fans. Nothing could be further from the truth and it’s the fans who policed themselves at the buffer zone.
I was even more irked to see some fans at Gate 1 where the gor bus was packed throwing missiles into the field where ingwe was receiving the shield. By the way Gor players were to recieve runners-up medals and maybe this didn’t happen.
How I wished to see Gor and Ingwe fans ‘celebrating’ a succesful 2013 together only for these dunderheads to mess it up. LET the derby rivalry be in the pitch, blogs and without any physical harm to anybody

##############Am among the people who watched the game from sofaset branch yesterday and at the same time am among the people who made alot of noise here last week on over celebration, but yesterday i have to admit that the boys played very well except the midfield which everyone saw.I tell you the coach has to make a very tough decisions for him to resurrect this midfield because this is the section where sianga boys are who believe that the team is theirs and some have the gut of telling others that team ina wenyewe.I totally support MC.OSWETO Daddy should be shown the door first and i dont fear saying that the guy is not serious at all with some behaviours that i would not like to mention here.Another one is Akumu we could not be screaming about aholding midfielder know the guy was good last season due to logas harshness and he has diminished again due to off the pitch behaviours.I dont fear saying that without these guys Danny, owino calabar, jerry, mohamed, emuge, dube, mosoti, mapunda not forgeting rama salim ,we could have not even seen this kpl trophy but due to their maturity and consistency we managed to lift the trophy,The gor mahia consistency that made them to win kpl is because of these guys i have mentioned.solid defence with sserenkuma and calabar rising up in the time of need to lift the team, well done boys and you will go far.I repeat a tough decision has to be made in this team and i rest my case.otherwise yesterday the game was ok just like first leg when afc dominated and we won the game.

When Kogallo wins, the blog is full of praise for the team. When we lose, the coach this the coach that!!! This player this that player that!!!. As usual I was watching from Tok Komwanda – Sofaset branch – and can say without any fear of contradiction, that the team played well. The defense was superb apart from the single goal that AFC scored. Midfield was slightly above average and the attack is what let us down. We lost quite a number of open chances. All in all it was a tough and an entertaining game. Those blaming celebrations should tell some of us how we lost to Ulinzi, Western Stima, Tusker etc in TPL yet we were not celebrating then. Accept defeat and move on, we lost to a worthy opponent and that is football. We shall leave to fight another day.

I also watched the game at a packed studio video hall in Migori County and i saw above average midfield, aggressive forward play and very stable defence. Yes we lost but its what happens in football. I insist very few kenyan players understand the negative impact of ‘raha’ on professional footballers. We have a complete team in terms of personnel but this off the pitch intemperament is costing our mid players their careers and in turn the team its game. I think GM needs a holding midfielder of pinchez calibre and real no.5 &4 if musa and king David will be maintained on the flanks. I also believe we have depth in strikers and Paul Odhiambo should not be left to go. All in all the team is good and rightfully won the league on the pitch.

Guys, for fairness, i would take the 87 squad and compare, in Dan Ssere, i see Piki piki Ndolo, so we lack Dawo to utilize our aerial balls and i don’t see any strikers in the current premier league having the ability Dawo had then as eight of his nine goals were headers, midfield Erick Ochieng reminds of Fundi, so there we lack Magongo or Thigo to tawala the pitch with pace, and that is why Opiyo was unmarked to score that goal, in defence we lack a sweeper like Makamu to recover faster and retrieve the ball, finally we lack a winger in the likes of Jogoo or Lule, otherwise our players need to watch their off pitch activities coz i wonder what is ailing Kevo and Akumu. and lets be accommodating of each other as we all want the best for Gor Mahia Sirkal.

Wawawawa really why the jabs at each other? Yes we played well but the fact is that our midfield is the weakest link. Danny was being fed unnecessarily long balls surely something was amiss people. It took to long again for the bench to sub the obviously tired midfielders. Something happened to our midfielders they no longer have the fighting power. Really we need players with the right framw of mind, stamina and skill. My worry is what with the coming elections we might just find ourself in a ditch.
