Mashemeji derby ends scoreless, Gor Mahia win on penalties

Kevin Omondi in action against Duncan Otieno

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards settled for a scoreless draw in their Mashemeji derby encounter at Afraha stadium on May 1. The result prompted post match penalty kicks which Gor Mahia won 5-4 after Vincent Oburu of Ingwe slammed the last kick above the crossbar.

Gor Mahia will now play against Hull City at Kasarani on May 13.

Additional reporting from the Standard

Gor Mahia edged out bitter rivals AFC Leopards 5-4 on post-match penalties in yesterday’s Hull City Challenge Cup at Afraha Stadium. K’Ogalo have thus earned the right to play English Championship side Hull City on May 13 at Kasarani, Nairobi.

After misses by Jacques Tuyisenge and Whyvonne Isuza, Meddie Kagere, Godfrey Walusimbi, George Odhiambo and Joachim Oluoch scored for Gor Mahia.

Ezekiel Odera, Baker Lukooya, Dancun Otieno and Robinson Kamura scored for Leopards to send it to sudden death shoot-out.

Then Bernard Ondiek scored for Gor Mahia and Vincent Oburu blasted over to hand the KPL champions an opportunity to play Hull City.

AFC Leopards goalkeeper Ezekiel Owade put up an impressive first half performance that kept his side in the match. Despite Gor Mahia resting most of their first team players in the first half, the Kenyan champions were still the more aggressive side.

Gor Mahia had nine shots on target with Owade being commanding form.

AFC Leopards on the other hand had just three shots with goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch largerly undisturbed for most of the match.

With the exception of Ezekiel Odera’s first half effort that nearly counted for Leopards, Oluoch who was coming back after a one match suspension had an easy time.

Gor Mahia enjoyed plenty of possession with Kevin Omondi coming close at the half hour mark.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga caused a stir at half time when he landed in a helicopter accompanied by legendary Joe Kadenge.

Leopards started the second half strongly, forcing two quick corners, but Boniface Oluoch denied them.

Moses Mburu became the first player to be cautioned when he received a yellow card at the hour mark for a bad tackle on Lawrence Juma

The impressive Leopards goalkeeper easily dealt with the resultant free kick.

Gor Mahia brought in Jacques Tuyisenge for Kevin Omondi while Ephraim Guikan was rested for Meddie Kagere.

The changes saw Gor Mahia create more chances upfront and came close to breaking the deadlock towards the end of the match.

Meddie Kagere was denied by the outstanding Owade in the 90th minute after being put through from the midfield to send the match into penalty shoot-outs.

Before that Gor Mahia rested goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch for Shaaban Odhonji in readiness for the penalty shoot-out.

Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr said his side wasted many chances and should have won it in normal time

  • Just this morning we were arguing about the need to give more hungry players a chance in the first 11 and i mentioned 4 players: Momanyi, Philemon, Lawi and Omondi Boni…..if you were objective enough you will agree with me that these 4 alongside 1 other who i had forgotten to include: Bernard Ondiek deserve more opportunity than some entitled first teamers. A worrying concern is that Gor’s second 11 seems to be playing better than the first. Good thing that Kerr alluded to having noticed the same thing in his post match rant!!!

      Hahaha, “post match rant”!
If Oburu’s penalty shot was against the crossbar then why did it not bounce back into the pitch? How could he have “slammed it against the crossbar” and then it flies into spectators behind the goal. I am a Physicist and my knowledge of mechanics cannot allow me to let that misinformation go unchallenged. Oburu simply blasted his shot over the crossbar. Awacho ayueyo, thoo..

Mark, Ker knows the importance of the derby. He also knows his players and therefore knows what he was doing when he fielded those “junior” players. What do we want him to do? The so-called seniors played on Sunday and are expected to play in Kigali in the coming weekend. What if he fielded them in this meaningless friendly and then they pick nasty injuries? Are we not the same people who will birate the coach as to why he risked our key players? We should know that with their red stomach, Efusi definitely cannot be happy seeing us wrecking home KES 27 million in the same tournament from which they were bundled out. Ker goofed in the Mathare match, but it doesn’t mean he’s brainless. At this rate, I think even Pep Guadiola would sweat to coach K’Ogalo.

  • It would have been an travesty of justice if efusi had won this unneccessary derby that was purportedly meant to determine who was to tackle Hull City. We are the one entitled to that match being Sportpesa Cup, League and Super Cup winners. I thank the team for rubber stamping our supremacy. Lastly to coach Ker as you have decided please take full charge of player recruitment in the June transfer window. Do not fear the expected resistance from the “agents” who push for the signing of “passengers” just like we will not accept this trend of blaming players who you have or should have final say on whether or not they are signed for GMFC. THE BUCK STOPS WITH THE YOU THE HEAD COACH, NO MORE BLAME GAMES AFTER JUNE TRANSFER.

It’s unfortunate that the Coach is reacting to some armchair coaches who wouldn’t even coach a kindergaten team. That’s how it is worldwide and some of the criticism you need to ignore while some you build on. What i noticed yesterday is that we have physically strong players but with wanting individual brilliance.Due to this we can employ power-play and win matches. I beg to differ with those on Odhis Muga case that Baba should not be criticized. Isn’t he human ? Doesn’t he make mistakes? Wasn’t he around when the team was desperate for funds to go SA? Weren’t our county Governors of Kisumu, Siaya, Migori and Homa Bay around? Don’t be surprised to see/hear the same guys trying to ‘attack’ Sonko for getting political mileage out of that act.
The truth is politicians like where there are crowds and fun but avoid where they are going to be asked for handouts. And Baba as a politician is no different,
Back to the game I liked the fighting spirit of Momanyi. Reminds me of Mosoti. On Ade he is either overweight or just not industrious enough and unfortunatel he tries to do those things he could do 5 or so years ago. On Guilkan I think we haven’t used him perfectly. He likes shooting so we need to feed him with such balls effectively.
If Gor can combine aggressiveness and coolness/precision then the team will go far

@Dan Original, why do we glorify handouts which in most cases comes from ill-gotten wealth? Baba has been an advocate of systems and working systems at that. Why should a team representing Kenya be funded by Raila or Sonko for that matter? Where is the government? Sports has a full cabinet portfolio. How do they spend the funds allocated to that ministry? Why do we like blaming everything on Baba? I think we are used to the bad culture that Moi cultivated in us. It is high time we changed this for a a better future. We must stop calling all cooking oil Kimbo or all toothpaste colgate. Things have changed.

“….why do we glorify handouts which in most cases comes from ill-gotten wealth?”…. Because that is what the political elite from Luoland want from those they lead. Keep them poor so that you and your kindred can be
their Lords from generation to generation.

If I am wrong then the KES 50B that the handshake earned should have already been seen trickling down to develop communities in Luoland. Remember that those women in Luoland are not just widows, but also lost their young sons and daughters to Matiangi’s trigger- happy Mungiki. The only crime that those youths and husbands committed was to heed “Baba’s” call to pour into the streets and defend their right to go to Canaan. By the way even 6 months old baby Pendo is no more.

Ask yourself what you have done to improve your own life and NOT what Raila has done for you. Truth be told, we love living large as a community and blaming everybody for our own failures. Our brothers from central live in Thika, Murang’a and travel to the city everyday in some old pickup. That pickup carries milk which he supplies in Nairobi offices. In the evening the same pickup is used to carry chakula ya Ng’ombe. And what does a Jaluo does, He lives in upmarket, spending almost half his monthly salary in paying rent. He buys an expensive car and live lavishly. Back in the village, he has nothing. Then he shout loudest, ni Raila this Raila that. Opportunites come, Central will thin of a brother first, Jaluo will not even think about a brother. Ami owadwa tich mondo oloya, ongee. And many others. We are our worst enemies. ASK NOT WHAT RAILA HAS DONE FOR YOU BUT WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR EXTENDED FAMILY. ITS STARTS WITH YOU NOT RAILA.

@Kosero, our discussion here is in relation to Gor almost not making it to SA yet we expected the Patron to do something for his team.AR has been reaching to all persons who can assist, even going to ‘perceived enemies’ of Gor fans. The leadership of a team is what helps it to get sponsors. Our Patron is known worldwide. The question is why he cannot use that network to even get Samsung or Flying Emirates or even Safcom to be either the main or just one of the sponsors? Alternativly let the 4 counties co-sponsor Gor and it markets them their shirts. As it is some legislators are threatening to shoot down the bill reducing betting tax from 35 to 15%. In case they succeed then we go back to begging. By the way can’t we sell maybe 5% of the club to potential buyers? Yanga , or is it Simba did that and now is one of the riches clubs in Africa. We cannot operate 1900 club model in 2018

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Getting sponsorship is not as easy as easy as you want to make it sound. Come down to earth. Its a different ball game. And who told you that the patron has done nothing regarding the sponsorship. There is a lot that happen behind the scene, so let us not assume here that we know everything in the club. • Am amongst the many who appreciate the fact that Sonko came to the aid of our begging bowl but very disappointed that it had to reach that stage solely out of our organisational and structural mediocrity .
From the moment we won the league , we knew that exclusive of the many political promises extended to us by the goverment , we had to put in place measures to remedy such situations when they arose but what did we do instead . . .nothing , the little avenues within our control , we stole from ourselves , the other avenues we launched with pomp and glamour , we lazily let them fizzle out and in other circumstancesforced ourselves Into the stadium to avoid paying 200 or 500/- , just to turn around and start looking around to see who failed to bail out the flock when the flock needed us.
For time immemorial , Oduor 12 has painstakinly been doling out common sense measures the club can use to raise revenue , measures that any office holder with an iota of brain should be having within his / her grasp
But alas that doesnt happen and then what happens next , people with simplistic conclusions to matters that are otherwise not that simple rush to fill that gap to display their “bravado ” by blaming others for the mediocrity of others who have been given the mandate to run the day to day affairs of the club .
Its the height of folly and with a lot of regret that we have engrained it into our minds that it is the obligation or responsibilty of politicians to always pop up to remedy our shortcomings and shortsightedness .
What pray should somebody have an issue with one or any of us attending a match . .ati he didnt bail us out , if that is the attitude we have then we should forever have permanent begging bowls at the ready , the other option is to account for why we fought
Sweat and blood to be elected to run the club and that is irrespective of whether you are liberal or conservative .
My question to myself is , WHAT HAVE I DONE FOR GOR MAHIA
