Mieno targets group stage

Gor Mahia’s new signing Hmphrey Mieno is setting a place in the 2018 Africa Champions league as his primary target for 2018.

“It feels great to join Gor because it is a big team with quality players and ambitions and making my debut on a winning start was great. Hopefully, we can keep this going especially in the CAF Champions League where I hope we can get to the group stages,” Mieno told Capital Sport.

Beating Esperance will be a tall order should Kogalo play them. Mieno’s experience playing in the Tunisian league will be useful.  The vastly experienced Mieno has played for KCB, Sofapaka, Club Africain, Azam, AFC Leopards and Tusker.  Gor Mahia have tried to sign him in the past.

“I feel happy to be here and so far it has been very positive. I am still learning my new team-mates and I want us to do great things together. Winning the league is also a priority but right now it is just taking a game at a time,”he continued.

Coach Dylan Kerr for his part is satisfied with the performance of the new signings.

“It is a very good problem for me because now no one can afford to sleep. Everyone knows their position can be taken by anyone else. It is now up to them to fight for the jersey and show me they want to play for K’Ogalo,” the coach said.

Gor Mahia start their KPL campaign against Nakumatt on Saturday. They will then play AS Vegeterianos the following weekend. Should they win they will face off with Esperance.

“It is going to be a very tough season and we have to be prepared to give our all. Nakumatt is a very tough team and they should give us a challenge which will prepare us well for Continental Football. We just need to give our best,” Kerr added.

Group stage of either CL or Confederation Cup is the target. Should Esperance prove a hard nut to crack then we drop to Confed Cup for a qualification match of the Confed group stage for another bite at the cherry. Disaster is being knocked out by the “Veges…” in the first round and losing the Confed qualification match. Otherwise Mieno’s attitude is spot on. Self belief and confidence can’t hurt.
