Money raised at Gor Mahia-Congo match dissapears

7000 fans attended the encounter pitting Congo United and Gor Mahia on Wednesday, yet Congo as the home team went home with a paltry 43,500 shillings as gate collection. The Mombasa municipal council and FKL were in charge of the gate charges and announced that only 203,000 out of a possible 1million shilling was realized.

Congo also claimed Mombasa Council agents who manned the gates during the Congo/Gor Mahia FKL Cup match “fleeced” the club of money, ending up receiving a paltry Sh43,000 from a well attended match.

Even for lowly attended matches, Congo makes Sh160,000 to Sh300,000 at Mbaraki. In a record breaking match, like against crowd-pullers Gor Mahia, Congo made over Sh700,000 at Mbaraki.

The club said that over 7,000 fans attend their FKL Cup match, higher than all their previous matches at Mbaraki, but gate-keepers announced a taking of only Sh203,000. Congo said they anticipated over Sh1 million to be collected.

“We were cheated by council officials. How can soccer develop when we are still engaged in corruption,” asked Cong United vice-chairman Evans Mzungu.

“We are a poor community club, working hard but, apparently, for other people, who have no stake in football, to feed off our sweat in broad daylight. That was an unfortunate situation and as Congo United we will not play our matches at the stadium.”

This situation mirrors what happened in July of 2000 when Kenya faced Swaziland at the very same Mombasa municipal stadium. In that occasion, close to Ksh 1 milllion dissapeared and has never been recovered.

Congo is a community club , they need the money. Let heads roll somewhere. It could happen to us also. We no longer want thieves in football management at whatever level. Somebody sould come clear and account for every single penny of the collections on that day.

  • THIS IS NONE OF. OUR BUSINESS

Now i know why a section of our fans especially those who contribute on this page were agitated against the man or woman who post topical issues on this page. This person lacks objectivity. I don’t think the facts he posted are correct.

How did u know 7000 fans attended the match? Who/ where is your source of information? How does this story help Gor? How comes mainstream media did not pick up the story?

It is now high time Gor officials consider employing a full time, competent and hardworking editor who can give us value for our money. I expected this gentleman/woman would pick a story such as the one on fasttrack column of today’s standard about Gor opening a merchandise shop at Nyayo national stadium.

Posting to us such story as the one above not only shows lack of seriouness on the part officials but also kind of lip service we are getting as tans.

Remember, it is us who are footing the bill of this website. We therefore demand excellent service from the secretariat.

This is very much everyone’es business. All fottball fans in Kenya should be concerned about this. The Kenya premier league and the national team cannot progress when this kind of corruption always happens. I for one am glad that Congo United raised this issue because I think Gor Mahia is not immune to this. Money has been dissapearing at Gor Mahia games as well.

We need the KACA to investigate this pronto. This kind of behaviour needs to stop.

  • You want to tell me the even in FKL cup the home team keeps the gate collections. Surely there must be a better way coz the fact is our beloved K’galo is the home team when visiting most,if not, any part of Kenya. Our officer bearers must engage with FKL/KPL to rectify this since GM also incurred expenses traveling to Mombasa. As for Congo United don’t just cry report these guys to Lumumba and hope that he does more than hold a demonstration against Mombasa municipal council and FKL.

Well thought all the contributors except Bro, Pareyio, there is an African puzzle that talks about a villager who ignored a fight to keep away a notorious serpent by his fellow villagers only for the serpent to make a home for its off springs in his house..

Its naive for us to say that corruption does not concern GM and yet we’re told of 90% of jersey sales being channeled to brokers and puported sponsors..by all standards no matter the explanation this remains a concern..the other day questions were raised about our own gate collections in relation to the visibly good attendance..

I think some people believe that questions are asked by hooligans and people bent on politics..Its true GM was quite down a few years ago but should we not move? cant we do better? Are the current leaders small gods who are unquestionable? Haven’t we got quite bright ideas from the branches..like the bus project..how many times have people screamed about the club house,Club shop n the rest..

If our leadership does not address development agenda very few people will calm down..

I believe any office has a mandate to fulfill and any community has values and agenda that must be articulated and this does not include worshiping leaders even when their actions are visibly unwise..

Lastly i believe the editor so far has improved in diversity and style.

@ pareyio ole lelerue, in FKL Cup the gate collections are shared equally between both teams. So Gor Mahia also got Kes. 43,500 and hence it is also our business. The only saving grace is that FKL paid for our air fares and as such our savings are much better.

  • Thx omondiomollo uve answered by question. Dear fans there’s this idea of sofa-set /mpesa branch that sounds attractive. Why finance the enemy by attending Gor’s away matches in droves and the home pockets 100% of the collections. Should we not watch the such matches on TV and Mpesa the gate fees to K’galo. Of coz the players loss the moral support but this may force KPL/other clubs to share our away matches revenue.

Its unfortunate but we must advice football fans that the care collections should be shared on fan strength or 50:50 less the mandatory expenses. this used to be the case until one candidate introduced the 100% home team idea which almost killed the community clubs aka. GM and AFC. We should also insist on the seats at nyayo being numbered, zoned,Marshalled and tallied with the tickets. The stadium management should be sought competitively so as to help market the terraces to various sponsors to spread the costs and improve revenues tv coverage…OBINGO NYAKWAR ADUOBITA

Oduor 12, what a weird way of thinking? its not about the money when it comes to the movement, its the fellowship!!!!!we will go whenever Gor goes!!!!! I have never missed any away match even if it calls for flying. its just fun. change that attitude bro.
    GOR FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Papamiky just cool down and relax, think about it objectively-K’galo plays 15 aways games in a season and does not get a single cent, yet GM incurs expenses to play these games-More so the big away games are against NBI teams Tusker (unless they go to Mumias and only coz they are a coperate club),Sofapaka,AFC, Mathare etc will raise substantial revenue coz of the MOVEMENT but WHAT WILL GOR, GET ZERO IN FINANCIAL TERMS. THAT’S Y I SAY THIS IDEA OF HOME TEAM TAKES ALL HURTS GM FINANCIALLY THERE SHOULD BE A 75%/25% SPLIT OR SOMETHING coz others take advantage that we will go wherever(not whenever) Gor goes.

I think Oduori12 has a point. It is beneficial to GM if we give either the Kshs. 500/- or the Kshs 200/- during our away matches, it keeps our account busy every week.

At the same time not everyone travels so they will be doing something benefiting GM (THOSE WHO DO NOT TRAVEL)

Our game against jokongo(drinkers) revealed. one og our weaknesses.Thats holding the ball and stringing short passes and long ones. we also needed to feed our forwards with ground balls esp selenga to run rings round shikokoti! Zico also needs a 2nd opinion as most often his reading of the game and correcting the weaknesses is slow.ww should ecpsnd tbe technical bench even if on march days only to give zico ideas? How about it? And ataro is not seeing rhe benefits of seeing deep into the future kf soccer in kenya! Why ? BOB NYAKWARBITA
