Moses Odhiambo “Dube” favours Gor Mahia for league title

Former Gor Mahia midfielder Moses Odhiambo “Dube” thinks his former club has the best chance to retain the title they won last season. This according to “Dube” is because Gor Mahia have an easier schedule left compared to the other contenders.

“Gor have a higher chance of winning the title, they are two points ahead of the second placed team and on paper they have easier fixtures compared to the other title contestants” he said to futaa.com

Dube however maintained that the last few matches are going to be tough for all three teams.

“The remaining fixture are tough for the top three teams, anything can happen and  any of the top three can win the league, he continued.

Profile of Moses Odhiambo

The classy Moses Odhiambo joined Gor Mahia in 2011 from Young Africans of Dar es Salaam. In his three years at Gor Mahia, “Dube” played a pivotal role as Gor Mahia won the league, the FKF cup twice and the KPL top 8.

Nicknamed “Dube” for his dreadlocks and his physical resemblance to South African reggae singer Lucky Dube, Odhiambo was an industrious, tireless midfielder who always tracked back to help the defence and also created numerous chances for the forwards. His playmaking skills are something the club sorely misses now. Odhiambo’s ball control and his intelligence on the field is immaculate.

His career started as a youngstar with the now defunct Utalii United. He immediately established himself as one of the best midfielders in the country. When Utalii was disbanded, he joined Tusker. He was soon called up to the national team, then coached by Frenchman Bernard Lama. His exploits on the local scene attracted the eyes of Tanzanian scouts. He soon joined upstart Moro United. He was in sensational form in the 2006 CECAFA cup when he scored three goals to help Moro United reach the finals. Most notable was his quarter-final goal against Simba sports club which enabled Moro beat Simba 2-1

His performances compelled Simba to swoop in and sign him in 2007. He established himself as one of the best players in the Tanzanian league in his role as a roving midfielder under coach Twalib Hilal. He stayed at Simba briefly before joining APR of Rwanda. He was the APR squad that beat Gor Mahia handily in 2008. Upon leaving APR, Odhiambo had a stint with Belgian second tier side AS Eupen from 2008 to 2009.

The 2012 season was his best in the Kogalo jersey. With Logarusic in charge, Odhiambo was at the heart of the Gor Mahia midfield, pulling the strings, setting up goals and supporting the defence. His most memorable moment came when he headed home a cross from Moses Otieno to give Gor Mahia a 2-1 win over arch rivals AFC Leopards in the FKF cup. His superb form in 2012 saw him named to the national team under another Frenchman Henri Michel. At the end of the season, he struck a deal with a side in the Omani deal. The deal however fell through when the Omanians reneged on an earlier promise and Dube returned to Gor Mahia much to the relief of Gor Mahia fans.

And he would play a  key role in enabling Gor Mahia win the national league after an 18 year hiatus. It thus came as a surprise to many when he was released by the club. This column would like to thank “Odhis Dube” for his three seasons of distinguished service.

Sofapaka has the toughest run, they have Gor,afc, tusker, sony, kra and muhoroni.I see them picking maximum six points from the remaining games.

  • we dont even need to look at sofapaka, all we need to do is avoid defeat in atleast 4 matches and the rest will be history. remember the pressure is on our challengers, us we are almost home and dry. should we lose it to sofapaka, for i strongly believe TUSKER are already BOTTLED and they know it, it would be the most painful season in kogalos history, 2012 would look like child play.

My take is that though Dude is a skillful player he is extremely goal shy and would rather pass the ball than go for goal even when “scoring” seems the easier. In 2012 he just off scoring opportunities that would have given us crucial points.Anyway its upto to the TB to decide whether or not they need him.

Now having digested the Sofaset Kampala Branch’s “wacha hasira” post my opinion is the branch’s member(s)seem to be brushing aside accountability issues mainly because they are restricted by “family obligations” and that the amount we individually pay is too small. The branch poses “How much is it anyway?” & “Whatever you and I give the club is too little to make fuss about.”
    REALLY THO!
    Music to EC’s ears.
Anyway my point is if you claim to be a branch then do as a branch does and if you are restricted by family obligations to attend only a few matches then its no crime.
Likewise some of us are restricted by accountability issues from giving just a little more so what is the crime there.
Remember that collectively GM fans actually sustain the club, please don’t rubbish they belittle their contribution.
Hasira onge just expressing my views just as Kampala Branch sofaset is doing.

ODUOR12, indeed the amount you give is not commensurate to the amount of accountability noise you make. Morning accountability, afternoon accountability, evening accountability. Accountability yet hatutowi pesa. Upuzi mtupu. Or is it a case of us always insisting on “wuoyo e pesa na kata otin”. Loosely translated to mean, that even if you contribute peanuts, you must be heard were billionaires to talking.
That noise should be directed to cheering Gor especially now that the league title seems to be ours to lose.

Must have spoken the truth and touched a raw nerve.
Anyway I find personal exchanges very boring and therefore rest my case you’ve made your point and had your say, same as I.
Mine is to join the rest in wishing Dube all the best and only encourage him not to be so goal shy.
I agree on paper GMFC has the easier final run but on the field is another matter remember 2012!

I wish Gor well but to say that Gor Mahia has higher chances of winning the league because the remaining matches are against weaker opponents is a big mistake and a false deception. No team is weak these days. Was Gor Mahia not defeated by Top Fry who are the last in the current league table standings? Gor Mahia be warned, to win the league , take every team seriously . No team is weak

Its common knowledge that we all can not be equal and the same, and so is our perception, speed and reaction intensity.

I believe what Oduori12 is putting across definitely makes sense to all but to some the variance is on the timing while to others the issue touches on their role models, friends and immortal community financiers.

Surely sure, a trip to the gates will make any sensible GM fan, supporter or sympathizer not just baffled but sad too. Regardless of what anyone believes to the contrary, the practice can not go un rebuked or utterly fought effectively. Now that we have the likes of Oduori12 volunteering to take the bull head on, are we not blessed? It is even nicer that Kosero, Dan and Mwakio can attest to the fact that Brother Oduori12 has been and remains vehement in the quest for a stop to mismanagement at the gate and other GM resource avenues.

Kindly continue with the civic education and whistle blowing Bwana Oduori12, from the active arena i can’t see anyone against you, its only obvious that those you think are against your noble course may not just be able to handle two things at ago, so they would rather you light the fire after the season ends, but how will you talk about such crimes at the gate without demonstrable evidence?

No. The time is now, the time for laying the truth bare is now. No. It is not mine and your duty to clear corruption at the gate because there are those charged with that responsibility. Remember it doesn’t matter how much you contribute to gm to be able to talk, there i nowhere in the GM constitution where the right to talk is measured by how much you contribute to whatever..these assertions are baseless, careless and can not do more than irritation.

Practices like GM donating players to rich clubs like Simba to as far as the multi billionaire team of north Africa, all this because GM managers have not done their part then after we resort to Harambees!

There is no proven correlation between raising issues on bad management and contribution to the club.

Now that contract for Sserenkuma is ending i urge EC to give him non-committal contract so as EC can sell him to ALKHATOUM FC Sudan THE way they did to Akumu
In his place KCCA fc Uganda striker UMONY or TZ Simba sc striker Tambwe should be recruited

Also EC should start negotiations with MAROKA SWALLOWS SUNDOWNS to see if they can recruit Haron Shakava so that Gor can get some fee from sale of Shakava

Also i request EC and new coach to get jerry onyango a good club abroad the guy has served us well

On the remaining matches, Gor mahia players shud know better than anybody that any team in the kpl is a worthy opponent & shud not be underated as they did Nakuru allstars & were tough a lesson that they will never forget. All teams meeting Gor will not play to win but will just want to frustrate k’ogalo family(team & fans ) bcos of pride that they did not loose to Gor.k’ogalo 4rever

An example of why you be very proud of being a GMFC terrace fan!

Gor Mahia raked in close to Sh5.6 million in gate collection in addition to their Sunday afternoon derby with AFC Leopards providing the most entertaining encounter in many years.

Ticket Masters, which mans the gates during Gor’s home matches, said the income was the club’s highest in more than a decade.

Its operations manager, George Ocholla, said this was the first time a Kenyan Premier League club had earned such a huge amount from ticket sales.

“This is a good trend in our club football. During last year’s derby in October, Sh2.5 million was raised, surpassing an earlier record of Sh1.5 million set by K’Ogalo against Sofapaka FC a month before,” said Ocholla.

According to figures released by the company, 2,997 VIP tickets were sold, each at Sh500, as were 20,487 for the terraces, each retailing at Sh200.
    In summary:
    VIP Tickets 2997x kshs.500=kshs.1,498,500.00
    Terrace Tickets 20,487 x kshs.200= kshs.4,097,400.00
This has been and is the trend as regards the make up of GMFC’s gate collections.
However to me personally both set of fans are equally important. Sadly we now realize a paltry kshs.600,000.00 per match due to a number of factors.

And came across this looking for the above article. SHOCKING IS ALL I CAN SAY!
Grand Corruption in Gor Mahia ticketing and gate collections
    March 3, 2014 By soka25east 0 25
    By Michael Kijana,
Corruption scandals have rocked Kenyan premier league 2013 champions Gor Mahia in a scale never unprecedented as officials resort to accusations and counter accusation regarding gate collecting which have been disappearing leading to panic from the very passionate and committed fans.
A close source who spoke to Soka25east.com intimated that the newly elected officials some of who took huge loans to to service their campaigns have now gone on an over drive to to ensure they make money to re-coop whatever they used during the campaigns wooing the voters.
The scandals were first witnessed during the first Gor Mahia game against City Stars at the City Stadium where the same officials are reportedly to have organised for the gates to be broken since they printed tickets but failed to present the same to the City Stadium management for registration hence once the tickets were over fans streamed into the stadium in droves leading to massive losses.
“A click has been formed in the name of marketing Gor Mahia but their purpose is to ensure they make as much money as they can to recuperate from the daunting elections where they used so much money. This same people caused a crisis at City Stadium when they printed tickets but failed to register them with City Stadium leading to fans breaking the gates to gain access and we know very well this was a well planned move”The source who sort anonymity told Soka25east.com.
The biggest scandal to also be unveiled involved the Saturday match between Gor Mahia who were playing Esperance of Tunis.
The said group who have continually been mentioned printed tickets and went further to open up a bank account at Diamond Trust bank that even the chairman Ambrose Rachier was not a signatory. They presented the tickets which were haphazardly arranged to the Gor Mahia commitee and gave blank forms for the officials led by former Migori Mp John Pesa to sign but the former member of parliament declined insisting that the tickets had to be counted.
The group that presented the tickets had alluded to the fact that they were not able to print 20,000 tickets adding that they managed to only print 13,000 tickets for the terraces and 800 for the Vip’s .However upon insistence that the tickets be counted it was realized that the tickets were more than the number declared with 2500 Vip tickets and over 20,000 tickets for the terraces further adding to the worries that the same group was up to swindle the rest of the money realised during the match no wander they never wanted them printed.
The group has now resorted to facebook attacks on other officials while it is clearly known that their intentions are clouded in mystery.
Gor Mahia is one of the most succesful clubs in Kenya many have been wondering why the team with so many supporters who work hard to attend to both home and away matches has financial issues despite being the club with the highest gate collection which is mostly mis -appropriated.
With the withdrawal of Tuzo as the title sponsor it remains to be seen how the Mighty Kogalo will handle its affairs as the money realised in gate collection is what is supposed to be used to help in day to day operations and paying of salaries .
Gor Mahia campaigns has been said to be an extremely expensive affair but the problem is that the same people only realize that upon being elected their are no monetary gains leading them to scheme on how to refund their money used by fleecing the gate collections leading to losses at the famous club.

P.S @ Kassam your comments/views are much appreciated.

Thank you Oduor12. Now let no one rubbish this as 20th Century talk. Anyway, you never know they may actually be the same clique.

I think all the greed for money arises from the elections. If only the elective posts could be reduced and some of those roles allocated to appointed officers then the looting would be reduced somehow. The question is who will be courageous enough to make the first move?

  • i dont condone corrupt practices, but surely, people, we dont have to be cry babies, without any doubt, not all has gone well this season, but surely, logs dont lie, our position on the table should be reason enough for the most pessimist person to believe that kogallo is well run, i would say this for free, “corruption is embedded in kenyans veins and DNA, not one kenyan would resist a chance to make that extra buck given the chance. what we must work on is to make fans OWN the team and at the same time POLICE for the team,if you own the team, you cant pay 20/= to gain entry to its matches for it will be like stealing from yourself, besides such practices must be criminal and should we note them at the gate, blow the whistle there and then for that would raise alarm and attention thus discouraging the culprits. but all in all opinions are like asses, everybody got his/hers.

@Oduor12, I have gone through your postings and none of these EC official or future EC official can make any meaningful change in Gor Mahia FC with current status of the Society Act. Even if we are elect new officials today of both you and me, I do not think whether any desired change can come through. We need a total overhaul of the team including the club’s constitution and article of association. The club must change to a limited company. The endless elections are the real problems and root cause of the decay and decadence in Gor Mahia. The endless elections have always continued to usher in the inept officials with no skill, vision, capacity and knowledge of managing an institution like Gor Mahia.

Apart from few officials that have capacity to run the club, most of the officials are inept with no ideas at all.

Our current problems originate from these elections as guided by the outdated articles of the association of the club formed under Society Act. The article was drafted by the founders of the club but all subsequent officials have terribly failed the fans and supporters by not living to the real and modern world of football.

We know that Gor Mahia has continued to be mired in the murky waters of non-accountability in all areas of operations. There are no tangible records to show how the money raised from all sources including gate collection are spent. Is it any wonder potential sponsors are shying away?

Gor Mahia has been in existence for almost half a century, this qualifies Gor Mahia to be in the league of the likes of TP Mazembe, Asec Abidjan and Etoile du Sahel. Sadly, not even a single room structure stands as the club’s secretariat or clubhouse. We do not know where the numerous trophies are displayed or even where our rich history and archives can be perused. Its a crying shame for our great club. Meanwhile, our continental peers have talent academies, youth structures and even jets to fly their teams around.

It is never too late to bring desired changes and I think after end of KPL, the Executive Committee (EC) or club administration need to do something that can change the fortune of the club no matter the circumstances. We can’t continue in this state for ever. EC must change the way Gor Mahia is being managed. At the end of league, let all stakeholders congregate together to come up with short term, medium term and long term action plans for our clamour club.

Our club must move with the times and professionalise their operations. They must put in place independent and transparent institutions to oversee crucial operations like finances, marketing, auditing, merchandising etc. If these are overlooked, all new office bearers will inherit the same old challenges, see out their term, leave and pave the way for another takeover. A vicious circle that will take Gor Mahia nowhere, until Jesus Christ come back.

  • we do apreciate all info on how pple swindle Gor of the needed resources.I need to be convinced on how this info will help Gor win the league @ this crucual moment. There r issues which can only interfere with our perfomance. we wud like to know y Gor cannot even collect 1m/match but @ the moment our mission is to support the team to retain the title. Anything about accountability shud be discused later. Thats my opinion which am entitled to. K’ogalo forever.

  • Michael odhiambo iriek (cleaver) how does all these help us win the league?

we should be discussing how to motivate the players. Put some money, Tel the players for every win , what they will get, put it at even Kshs 500K for every match won of the remaining matches. That’s accountability. Give each man of the match Kshs 10,000 for all the remaining matches, That’s accountability. Ensure all players are on camp for the remaining 5 matches, that’s being accountable.

We only wait to be told we won the league then we coin dholuo words, gigi magwa, gini marwa, etc.

    You deserve kuchapwa na okwajo
