Mount Kenya players boycott match

Players at Machakos on Thursday

Gor Mahia were due to play Mount Kenya United today at Machakos. But Mount Kenya United players were holed up at City stadium refusing to travel to Machakos.

Their coach Melis Medo tried in vain to convince the players to honour the match.

“I have tried to convince the players to honour this match but they have refused. They are way within their rights not to play so there is nothing I can do,” he said to the Nation.

The coach confirmed that he too is owed salary arrears.

“I have also not been paid for a while. I could be kicked out of my house tomorrow (today) over rent arrears and my electricity people say they will disconnect supply this (last) evening over the same issue.”

Another Mount Kenya player told the Nation that the playing unit has not been paid in seven months.

“I have been locked out of the house and haven’t eaten since yesterday. I am not in the right frame of mind to play the game and might even collapse on the pitch,” he said.

Coach Medo lamented the state of Kenya football.

“I think football in Kenya is all about politics and no tangible action. There is no problem in having five logos on the jerseys for example but are the concerned people doing enough to bring in more sponsors?”

Mount Kenya was United was founded by a politician Francis Mureithi. When Nakumatt FC was disbanded, Mureithi purchased the rights, which earned him a straight ticket to the Kenya Premier League. But his follow up has been abysmal.

For Gor Mahia, the walkover means 3 points while resting the playing unit which is good considering the tight schedule.

So sad indeed, how can one work for seven months without pay?? Mt. Kenya Ec, if at all there is, should walk with bowls or kofia to solicit for funds from their political leaders. They can come to Gor for benchmarking on begging techniques. Meanwhile it is a blessing in disguise for us.Three free points plus three goals.

I was afraid that this was primed to be one of the richest clubs in Kenya, but sorry who among all those billionaires can part with mbeca in support of just football!! The rich also cry. Let the team come with begging bowls, us Kogalo are generous, we could give

Then you’ll hear somebody saying that Gor were advantaged that’s why they took the league.

No advantage. According to FIFA rules, if a team fails to appear in the pitch for a match the opponents are given a walk over. That is the rule. If anything Mlima Kenya are not a threat.

I am so sorry for those young people. Going for seven months without money is not easy. These are people who have responsibilities over themselves and others. When their coach talked about water having been disconnected at his house, it completely explained the state of affairs. All I can say, whoever bought that club has a lot to do in order to keep it afloat. Kudos to big teams like Gor who have always weaved their ways around it.One thing for sure, running a Football team is not a walk in the Park especially with the current reality of financial implications and competition. I wish the name Mt.Kenya should have been used positively to draw people from that region to build the support base for the club. How I wish they apply the same political passion to do this.
As for K’Ogalo, this is a relief in many ways. Firstly, is to hold tightly up there and continue to widen the gap. Secondly, considering back to back matches they have been playing to catch up with the rest in games, it was a time to rest and prepare more for Tusker. You all know Matano and his theatrics. If they win, the boys played according to my instructions. If they loose, the referee denied us a clear goal and a penalty and you all so it. My urge to all, let us try to mobilize every one so that we continue to support our great team through thick and thin. Have a good friday.

I think the federation should come up with watertight rules and regulations on acquisitions of football teams in the country. Any serious potential buyers or investors should be made to get a bid bond and even guarantee from a bank.

What happened yesterday at Machakos stadium is not good for development of football in the country.

That coach of mount Kenya united,is really suffering and he did confess that he might even sleep on the street because he has been unable to pay his house rent. When he came in the country,I heard that he was a fitness coach. Most fitness coaches do have knowledge of the game and that’s why they normally turn to coaching. I was proposing to the technical committee to be filanthropic and consider helping medo by offering him a job on the technical bench as a fitness trainer,so that we help him and at the same time gain from his expertise. The man is suffering in Kenya he needs Gor mahia fc to be in family. My good brothers Kikuyu’s don’t care about sports and will never be attacked to any team in any sport, just like meru people. Have you heard of any meru person in any sport. So there is no way they can have an emotional attachment to any team. Remember thika united fc which is in kiambu and when Gor mahia are facing them, they are minority fans in their home ground and even the few who are there, don’t Cheer the team. You can see how kisiis are attached to shabana and you will see how supportive they are on their team. Jasego, kanyada, help that guy.he’s suffering.

With all due respect, Michael Ogolo are you sure that is right? Does Mt Kenya FC belong to any particular tribe? Is it not a Kenyan club apart from the name? PS Sports is from? SG FKF is from? Let’s check facts before posting anything.

@Michael Ogolo, clubs have support base from a certain region but they dont belong to those regions or tribes from those regions. Look at line ups of foot ball teams in Kenya, players are from various tribes, some players are from other countries. Let us not tie clubs to tribes simply because majority of their supporters come from a given tribe.

Names alone doesn’t necessarily equate to a sense of belonging.there is no team in the kpl or nsl that has players that are all from the same region.

Depicting teams as tribal or belonging to a certain region is old school and has no place in modern day society.

Football brings people together…that is why people like wanyama plays in england despite the fact that he is kenyan, and that is why di Maria plays in France yet he is Argentine, that is why batambuze plays in Kenya yet he is from uganda.

Let’s kick out tribalism and racism out of football!!

Why did they in the first place name it Mount Kenya united if it’s not trying to make it theirs (the modo Wa nyuba). In Kenya, we’ve community clubs which are attached to communities and even though am yet to register as a paying member of Gor mahia fc, am 100%sure that majority of registered members of Gor mahia fc are luos and that doesn’t mean that other people are barred from joining as members. Even AFC leopards are just the same. So it’s not tribalism if you have a community team.
