Nuttall: Gor Mahia played well but unlucky

Gor Mahia coach Frank Nuttall has opined that Gor Mahia played well enough to win the game but luck was not on their side.
“We played very well in both halves as the boys showed a lot of bravery. It is unfortunate that we are never given the credit we deserve especially after such a great performance against a team of this calibre. “As far as I am concerned, we are still in the match and will try and do better in the return leg,” he told journalists after the game.
Nuttall attributed AC leopard’s win to luck. According to him, Gor Mahia played better and deserved to win whereas the Congolese had one chance on which they capitalized.
“I really applaud the players. They dominated the first half and every player’s contribution was very impressive. The opponent had one chance in the second half and nothing else. We’ll see how it goes in the return match,” he said.

Cash Crunch hits Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia are already feeling the financial pinch of taking part in the Champions league. The team, according to Deputy Secretary General Naima Oketch needs at least Sh2.5million to travel to Congo Brazaville for their return match against AC Leopards at the end of March.
“We are spending almost a similar amount in the first leg and have had to borrow heavily to make ends meet. We are urging our supporters and well-wishers to come to our aid,” she said to the Standard. Among the biggest expenses the team has incurred is paying for referees’ tickets, which alone is Sh1.7million.
Matters are made worse by the poor attendance of the match. The Operation Jaza stadi campaign came a cropper. This is the lowest attendance seen for a Gor Mahia international match possibly ever.

  • Even though I have no problem with Gor losing this match, they boys did not play well. Playing well and losing cannot come in one sentence. What happened to the Sofapaka-CNAPs game pattern? Gor were completely nowhere in the midfield and the Leopard numer cinq was totally on holiday. He was never bothered by Blackberry. However Gor did not appear dazed by their opponents. The boys gave credible opposition. AC Leopards is a team which is technically competent and this was good competition for Gor.

First of all,I would like to appreciate the coach the way he is building up the team after every match, but according yesterdays match,I would put blame on the entire technical bench,in that they gambled with that match by the first eleven team and timing of substitution, and that is why we missed alot of chances. Therefore,my proposed first eleven would have been as follows : 1,Bonface Oluoch,2,Emuge , 3,Kevin Oluoch, 4,Diklay, 5,Musa, 6,Gatusho, 7,Omino, 8,Aucho, 9,Olunga, 10,Abondo,11,Walusimbi ,that’s according to my opinion.

@Dinga, AC Leopard are beatable as compared to CNaPs which were technically superior. We had our chances in the first half which we did not convert. In summary we were not clinical. Michael Olunga need to be fed from the midfield. Transitioning was a big problem as our players instead of moving forward, they were busy slowing the game by passing backward. We had more defenders in the team.

All in all we have good players and next time the coach Frank Nuttal should always be around before CAF list is submitted. If we had the Rwandese players registered on time, we could have won this game. Lack of concentration made AC Leopard god a very simple goal.

Thanks for restricting them to one, but the bad news is that that is an away goal. We will need two clear goals away, but its possible. Next time try 1.Oluoch,2. Musa,3. Oluoch,4. Glay,5. Shakava, 6. Okoth,7. Odhiambo,8. Aucho,9. Olunga,10. Abondo/Santo,11. Walusimbi

I would like to add my voice to this.Surely,we should give credit where it deserves. The boys really played their whole from the 1st whistle but lady luck never smiled @ them.Having the football blood in me or anyone who has ever played football will agree with me that the moment you hit a goal post,it’s always associated with bad omen.I expected high speed football from the Congolese which was not displayed. They r beatable in Congo. The spirit is high.Well done boyz.

as much as i know anything can happen in football,we also need to be realistic.
we needed to slay ac leopards here and because we did not chances are it wont be any easier in brazzaville.
in short,we have a herculean task of overturning that deficit but good luck to the boys!!

The organizers of the match are all to blame for poor attendance, misplaced idea to charge Sh.1000 for VIP ticket instead Sh.500. How on earth do you imagine that you bring on Gor mahia fans by charging Sh.1000 per ticket for VIP for an international game at a time when the momentum has not gathered locally due to banned local football. Personal I did not attend coz I thought that was too much. I am a regular attendant of Gor Mahia games

  • Seriously coach? This game Gor lost tactically, we gifted them with our misplaced passes, no closing down in the midfield, and instead of building a move from the back we kept on hoofing the ball to olunga upfront who was knittely marked buy three tall and huge leopard defenders and shockingly Nutall could not notice this. Gor only played better for the first 15 minutes. I think the coach should stop experiment in areal march.

  • This is indeed a bitter pill to swallow as Gor
Mahia showed relatively tactical discipline to earn
a draw but this is the CAF Champions League.
They need more creativity in the team to improve
in terms of build up, linkage and transitions.
Nevertheless, Nuttal showed he is more
pragmatic for continental football but they fall yet
    again in the first round.

  • Neima, 1.7 million for Four tickets? The referees come from Africa. Secondly the operation jaza kiwanja flopped because of your bad planning. Much as the team is bigger than any one of us, surely the EC need to be realistic. Am sure if the tickets could have gone for 600 & 200 respectively we could have managed good money. Assume we only targeted a paltry 15000 fans, 3000 on vip and 12000 @ terraces….do the math.

Jo Kogalo, do not despair. You played well against an experienced side. CNAPS were faster than AC leopards. Our game plan in Congo should be to score an early goal in Congo and frustrate them. Please coach do not tinker with a winning combination. Our line-up should be maintained. Our star Ali Hassan Abondo should be fielded whether fit or unfit. Such stars always confuse opponents. You remember Peter Dawo. Opponents would crowd on him and create chances for others to score. The line up for Congo return match should have a very rugged diffence/midfield. My suggestion is ;.Bonface Oluoch, Kevin Oluoch, Pierre,Clay, Musa, Emuge, Aucho, Abondo,Omino/Santos ,Olunga.Gatuzo,Walusimbi. We must be very solid no long balls please. let play cool and wait for them to make mistakes but defence and midfield must be solid wth very fast flanks. Olunga must remain in the central attack (all out striking). There is no pressure on Kogalo.

There is no genuine playmaker in that midfield on Saturday so it comes as no shock that Olunga was lost with no passes coming to him. It is not Nuttalls fault that there is no playmaker. However sometimes coaches do baffling things. Leaving Abondo on the bench doomed the team. And Timothy Otieno is no playmaker.
