Olunga and Oluoch bag individual CECAFA awards

Michael Olunga bagged the scoring title at the recently concluded CECAFA club cup. He scored 5 goals. Olunga also received the most plaudits of any player at this tournament for his clinical finishing, his precise assists and ability to take on defenders. His dexterity with the ball at his feet is excellent for a player his height.

Other top scorers were: Saleh Eldin Osman Bilal (Khartoum National) and Kipre Chetche (Azam), who scored four goals each. Malimi Busungu (Yanga) and John Bocco (Azam) scored three goals each.

Goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch was named as the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Oluoch has already established himself as the best keeper on the local scene. Adding a regional title is another feather in his cap.

Ivory Coast defender Serge Pascal Wawa Sfondo was named defender of the tournament and also player of the tournament. Despite playing with a 3 man defence, Azam did not concede a goal throughout.

Olunga though happy with his award, was unhappy at the final result.

“We were very optimistic as a team to try and give our dear fans something to smile about as they had travelled in large numbers to Dar es Salaam to give us support but it was not to be.”

“It was a gruelling game but in football you win some and lose some. Maybe we failed to click, but at least we gave a good performance throughout the tournament and it’s only fair to accept that it was not our day.”

“Individual rewards are good like the golden boot but I feel it would have been fantastic to be on the winners’ podium as a team. We have to now go back and concentrate on the league,” Olunga told supersport.com.

Gor Mahia have a lot to be proud about. It is a vast improvement on their performance from last season. The home team (in this case Azam) is always favoured to win. And No Kenyan team has come close to winning this tournament since Tusker won it over 5 years ago.  Gor Mahia can build on this success to challenge for honors in 2016.

We have a bright future and can only make it better locally, regionally and continental next year. Starting with proper recruitment and early Pre-season preparation. We lost a good fight but with much improvement from last year which means it can only get better. We should honor KMKM MAPINDUZI cup tournament as our initial Pre-season training and let the TB scout very well both locally and regionally. Gud luck in 2016.

  • Gor Mahia need to keep the team together next year and they should get a creator who will be an upgrade on Abondo. To drift inside the wings and assist in attacking centrally. We also need to see if Gor Mahia will always play with this intensity.

    That was an excellent performance.

We went to this competition as underdogs but proved all our critics that we are not a small team.

  • Kama brazil walitoa ndani mara saba mbona sisi.bayern and germany have all went thruogh that pain, but it doesnt mean that they are weak or weaker than teams like inter, italy or chelsea.so to me azam is not that of our standard though i admit the defeat.on top of that, local players must up their game wen playing infront of large crowd especially in away games.am saying so bcoz two or three of them were responsible for the two goals.

  • Analyzing our mistakes-Erick Ochieng’ was too rattled for a final match and failed to serve as a good replacement for Gatusso.Aucho wanted a red card badly than winning.I feel Agwanda should play in Gatusso’s spot if he’s injured. As was said we need a strong bench so that we easily don’t run out of ideas if first 11 fail.I hope Were will join the team plus other strong additions.

  • Congratulations to Gor for reaching the finals n displayin gud soccer. Even though i do not think Bonny Oluoch diserves the golden gloves. It makes me doubt the judges. He did not disserve it after the kick he metted out on an opponent. The discipline in Gor needs to b looked at n this needs immidiate attention. I think the ref did a gud job. The best player in this tournament was Olunga n this was by far… Aucho, Oluoch, Shakava merely displayed ghetto behaviour n they shud style. The lousiest player in Gor… i think he knows himself. But anyway congrats to you boys.
Olunga….sky is the limit for you.
