Goal can exclusively reveal the Ministry of Sports has approved a budget to assist financially crippled K’Ogalo

The Ministry of Sports has agreed to bail out financially struggling Gor Mahia, Goal can exclusively reveal.

According to sources within the Ministry, the club will receive Sh10million this week to help them sort out their financial challenges.

“The club [Gor Mahia] had requested us for financial assistance and we have agreed to give them some money to help them run their activities. The money will be released any time this week,” the source, who did not want to be named, told Goal.

Gor Mahia team manager Jolawi Abondo has been following up on the situation since last week. However, Abondo declined to confirm to Goal whether the club was seeking financial support from the government.

“I am just here to follow up on other matters,” he told Goal.

Gor Mahia have been struggling since shirt sponsors SportPesa pulled out from the local market citing unfavourable working conditions.

The club has not paid their players for the last four months and they have forced a number of players in the squad to tender notices to quit the Kenyan champions.

The move to receive funding from the government is likely to make other teams also seek for assistance from the Ministry.

Will Polack Return

Coach Steve Polack is leaving for the UK and it is not clear whether he will return. He also indicated that it may not be possible to play the next league match given that players are not training.

Additional reporting from the Nation
Gor Mahia coach Steven Polack has given the strongest hint yet that he may be leaving the club.

Polack said he will be leaving for his homeland England on Sunday for Christmas holidays and will return on December 30 “if all goes well.”

“I am leaving the country this Sunday and hopefully I will be back on December 30. I am an honest person and I will communicate my decision to the management if am unable to make it back so as to continue with my duties at the club,” said Polack.

“The strike by the players is still going on and I doubt if our game against Kisumu All Stars will be played on Sunday.

“How can you play in a match that you have not trained for? I’m waiting for direction from the management so as to see if players will end their strike and be back on training so that we can honour the match,” he added.

As uncertainty continues to surround his future at the reigning Kenya Premier League champions camp, Polack said he will certainly not be around to oversee K’Ogalo’s match against Posta Rangers on December 29.

If indeed the 10 million shillings story is true, I hope reason will prevail over the management and that the welfare of the players will take precedence over everything else.

The players are the reason we fans have been celebrating as top dogs over the years. If the management does not heed then the playing unit will be doomed.

GMAF is the way to go. Handouts cannot sustain a club. Other clubs like AFC Leopards will also go to the Ministry to be assisted. The story of being assisted in not sustainable.
Every time Gor Mahia gets some small assistance, they drop their money generating initiatives like Gor Mahia bread, a long lasting solution is needed and it is none other than GMAF.
