Sserunkuma unmoved by attention

Could deadly Dan Sserunkuma be scoring his way to the list of Gor Mahia greats?

The statistics certainly point to that as the pint-sized Ugandan forward reaps apart defences at will and his goals help Gor Mahia march on towards their first league title in 17 years.

Serenkuma, who has scored a league leading 17 goals, is not concerned about the accolades he is getting from the technical bench or the terraces. All he wants is to win the Kenyan Premier League title with Gor Mahia.

“I know people expect so much and that is what we want to deliver. I am an individual player, but we will have to work as a team to deliver the title. That is the most important thing to me. The rest are secondary,” he said.

“I am better off winning the league title with Gor Mahia and failing to win the golden boot or any other award,” he added. Should he get both he will be well on his way to gaining a place in Gor Mahia’s folklore like others before him.

There was, earlier, Maurice Ochieng “Sonyi” – the highest ever scorer in the Kenyan Premier League, then, later Peter Ochieng Dawo.

Ochieng’ is a living legend in Gor Mahia’s history, having steered the 12-time league winners to the title in 1976 with an unbeaten record, courtesy of his record 26 goals.

Dawo scored 10 goal to emerge top scorer in the continent in 1987 when Gor Mahia won the Mandela Cup. That same year Gor Mahia won a treble – the league, Moi Golden Cup and the Mandela Cup.

This year will mark the 25th year since Gor Mahia won the treble. This year is also the one they are closest to bagging three trophies and they may have the star to help them.

Crucial goals

That star may be Sserunkuma, whose goals have propelled Gor Mahia from a mid table side in June to in effect, champions in waiting.

Last weekend Sserunkuma scored a hat trick against Muhoroni as Gor Mahia went within a match of lifting the coveted title.

Should he find the back of the net and Gor Mahia win on Saturday against Thika United at the City Stadium, he will rightfully deserve a place in Gor Mahia all time star list.

And he also stands a chance of becoming the first golden boot winner from Gor Mahia since Dawo should he beat Sofapaka’s John Baraza’s tally of 17 by the end of the league on Saturday.

His exploits have not gone unnoticed at home and he was recently called up to the provisional Uganda Cranes squad for the forthcoming Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

The Ugandan is also a strong candidate for the KPL Player of the Year award. Sserunkuma is already a darling of Gor Mahia fans, his partnership with Rama Salim a fearful combination.

Saids coach Zdravko Logarusic: “This boy has the potential of being one of the greatest stars in African football. He is mature, yet still very young, strong on the ball, yet very tiny and speedy too.”

“I do not know much about the great players of Gor Mahia, but in Serenkuma, Gor Mahia has a player who will go down in the hall of fame,” added Logarusic.

It is his goals that seem to be winning the title for K’Ogalo. Will the 22-year old live up to his expectations on Saturday and win the title for Gor Mahia?

He says he is at Gor Mahia to win titles.

Danni Sserunkuma makes scoring look too easy but it is all out of self-belief, discipline and hard work.
As he puts it he is what he is because of team work and the entire team needs special mention.
One other player that has fought his way back to the first team is Kevin Omondi. You notice panic in the opponent the moment jersey 14 steps into the pitch. I am yet to see the defense that has answers to the TERROR that Kevin metes on them.

Sadly the worst player in this team turns out to be our very own EC. What is this premature celebration all about? Are those so-called artists you have invited going to perform for FREE? Why not channel that money you intend “to pay them” towards motivating players? Don’t be misguided to believe that inviting artists will attract a higher attendance. Ask me to pick between some clueless-but-expensive-artist and watching Gor Mahia play I will always go for watching K’Ogalo. And why raise gate fee? To line your pockets with the extra 100/-?

My advice revert to the normal gate charges and shelve that idea about artists. Wait for the final whistle on Saturday and then organise a special K’Ogalo family fun day if we win the title. It is only until then that a celebration will be appropriate and you can invite your artists. As for now it is ill-adviced. I hope you all read this comment before you address the press conference later today.

Ssurunkuma has a great potential and I must say it has been teamwork right from good goal keeping, defenders, mid-fielders to strikers. With good coaching, GM can raise so many stars and lift several trophies both in Kenya nad at the continental level. Before Logarusic came these players looked like nothing but now I can attest that sky will be the limit. Let us not be overconfident lest we stumble before getting the remaining two trophies.

LET THE CELEBRATIONS BE ON SUNDAY… WE PAINT NAIROBI GREEN WITH CARAVANS AS WE PARADE THE TROPHY. NOT SATURDAY. A BIG NO TO SATURDAY.

THE EC IS FULL OF THIEVES AND GREEDY PERSONS. WHEN PLAYERS WERE GOING WITHOUT SALARY. THEY KEPT MUM. LOGARUSIC BECAME THE SECRETARY GENERAL AND BECAME THE VOICE OF THE VOICELESS – THE PLAYERS….NOW EC WANT TO CASH IN HERE. WE WILL NOT ALLOW IT. GO TRY ELSEWHERE!! WE WILL UPROOT YOU!!!

MOTIVATION HAS TO GO TO THE PLAYERS. THEY HAVE TAKEN US BACK TO THE STADIUMS. WE GO WITH OUR WIVES, GIRLFRIENDS,CHILDREN…ALL FOLKS!!

WE BETTER DO SOMETHING. EACH PLAYER DESERVES A HUGE BONUS. NOT THE EC.

  • Dan has told the Ugandans to hold their horses. He is a professional. We have some crucial matches coming our way and i really wish all our players were this passionate. Harambee Stars call ups seemed to have interrupted our play a few weeks ago and now they are calling up players again.

As for the idea of Kasarani, i say a big NO! Why?

    1. Why change a winning formula. Since we were banned by SSMB from Nyayo our fortunes changed for the better at Tok Komwanda.

    2. Kasarani has no proper way of ensuring people pay 600 for VIP. Everyone will pay 300 or even 200 hence poor gate collection.

    3. Should anything happen that we loose (God forbid), Nymweya and co will have to deal with unprecedented mayhem over perceived match fixing.

EC please don’t bend on this one. VIP should be 1,000 at city and terraces should be 300 and bring in enough police to ensure no one crosses over even in case of rain. Those that can’t afford or will be unwilling to support the team on this one should be free to join Albert Kosero in his branch.

Dan ‘Flava’ Sserunkuma’s determination and discipline will guide him to greater heights.

I don’t know why GMFC officials concern themselves with issues which DO NOT CONCERN THEM AT ALL. Just coz some people decide to watch a match from the bridge while wearing K’galo jerseys they get involved but skip a important harambee which they themselves called. Leave those people at the bridge to city council askaris and police.
Moving the match to Kasarani is a short term solution. Officials should remember that City has been our lucky ground. It needs an upgrade on the terraces side to justify the 200bob. What our EC lacks is a strategic plan and structures, structures, structures. Why should bonus be discussed now IS THERE NO BONUS STRUCTURE WHICH IS REFLECTED IN THE CONTRACTS OF PLAYERS/BENCH. NOTE MIGHTY K”GALO WAS FORMED IN 1968

Amen to the wonderful prayers from brother Mwakio!!!…Please guys let us avoid all theses nonsense of CELEBRATIONS before we win the match…i wonder whoever is advising the EC on this.”The bird is in the cage and lets hold to it” as the coach says and Sir Bobby always reminds us of “Winning the next match”….be warned brethren, it is such early celebrations that caused the abortive ’82 COUP and also the post election violence!!!!!!!!

By the way, there are so many artists who are supporters of GM. let EC invite them for intertainment but not for payment. im very much sure that they wont resist to come. The money should be used to motivate players but not to organize something that even ourslves given opportunity can do. May Almighty Lord help Gormahia.
    Amen and Amen.

Ati KFF will purchase 3 trophies, original at City and two fake ones at Hope Centre and Awendo. It is a waste of money and time. One trophy at City is enough coz there will be only one outcome!!

Tomorrow men gonna be separated from boys.

Just like the just concluded US elections, the three top contenders, AFC Leopards, Tusker and Gor Mahia will be fighting for the TPL tittle honours this year.

I have no doubt K’Ogalo will lift the trophy. But first, there are 90 plus minutes separating us with the silverware. The players are acutely aware of the responsibility resting on their shoulders. And so is the coach and his team.

The green army too knows what is at stake. I urge everyone to exercise restraint and act responsibily after the match no matter the outcome. There is life after the game tomorrow. It is not a matter of life and death. It is actually a matter of life and life.

Finally may i take this early opportunity to wish our boys all the best. I can’t wait the trophy to be lifted by Jerrim Onyango!

  • Spot on. Tomorrow will be so much tension and excitement in equal measure and feels good that Gor and AFC are actually contenders – the football upturn that Kenya has needed for so long. I believe the dominance will sustain for several years now and move into Kenya’s return to dominate the regional scene.

Thank you Lord and thanks to the great fans and support from this blog. looking forward to a great celebration!
