The fans came in droves
City stadium was filled to the brim as fans turned up in droves to watch Kogalo vs Thika United. The crowds are reminiscent to those seen on the 1970s. Yours truly attended matches during the 1990s and
City stadium was rarely more than lalf full. By 2006, the crowds had dwindled to 1500 or so. It is great to see fans return in large numbers.

KOGALO FANATISM: WILL IT STAND THE TEST OF TIME?
I tell you. I feel a sense of de javu! iam truly proud to a kogalo movement follower. The bug caught me during 2009 season when our club finished 5th in the KPL table standing. For a long time, like many kenyans & probably some of you who contribute on this blog, i was a victim of negative ethnicity. I believed Gor Mahia was a club of the Luo, by the Luo & to the Luo. I detest the habit of stone throwing to innocent wananchi every time Gor is on the stadium. I wondered aloud how grown up men & women shout on top of their lungs to 11 men chasing a small ball. The green jerseys puzzled me more. While others chose to print their names on the back or their favorite player,others printed words i did not understand. Sample this : wuod…………. One day i went to find out.
First, i went through Nyayo national stadium gate to one of tickets selling point just outside the stadium. I bought a ksh 100 ticket. Just 10 minutes to kickoff, a burly man with a red t- shirt with the inscriptions, ‘Tickect masters’ ushered me through gate 5. The match was Gor vs AFC Leopards. The stadium was filled to capacity. I climbed 2 steps of the terrances & secured a vantage position to watch the game ‘ live’ . No one recognized that am an ‘ intruder’ infact a young man seated beside me offered a pkt of njugu. The referee blew his whistle. And the stadium simply exploded with song & dance. The Gor anthem was being played. I quickly tried to master the song. With an hour, I have learned to say;
Kogalo,
Gor Gor mahia.
By halftime, i have already fallen in love with Gor Mahia. The fun in the stadium was completely irresistible. When I walked out of the stadium that evening, I found out those claims against the club is unfounded & only meant to injure the reputation of the club.
And that’s how the bug caught me.
Today I have no regrets of joining the movement. Since my first visit, I have always returned to the stadium to watch Gor demolish other clubs. As a fan, we’ve had our own fair share of tribulations. We’ve shed tears. We went back home heartbroken & worn out. Why, because Nyayo is a theatre of dreams. I will remain a loyal supporter of Gor in the remaining years of my life.

@pareyio let me tell you am a Luo and i have experienced negative ethnicity but one thing i know for sure is this God gives us the Spirit to know what is right and wrong. To discriminate anyone based on their ethinicity is wrong to the core and anyone who practices that has got it all messed up i their head. I know of several guys who are Kikuyus who i know are so passionate about Gor mahia and dont give a hoot about whether guys are talking mother tongue at the terraces or not but one thing i have noted is that also the fans dont care what tribe you are so long as you a supporter. This is the spirit that is needed in all of us Gods creation, brotherly love. The sky is the limit. For once sundays game showed what i have always wished to see in the playing unit, skill and maturity. Zedi that was the best signing this season and this crop can go far. Its just a matter of time before they completely gel. We need leadership in the field just the way the likes of Zedi, Austin, Ogada etc used to command during their days. Who is the leader now?
Gentlemen i concur with your sentiments. Kogalo is a movement which has no ethnic barriers. We support Kogalo because of the way they play and all kogalo faithfuls have one thing in common”PASSION”

really a movement really a movement! the next stage is crowd management , educating fans on modern rules, referees selection and their ability to mange matches some of them are used to blowing the whistle on empty stadium,the contraband allowed in the stadium i feel glass bottle and hard liquor should be out some police officers are too rude they should too be trained on mob psychology i loved it is is only getting better
Pareyio thank you for that story. It was very moving. I am glad you joined the movement. I started watching Kogalo in the 1980s but I can tell you that even those days , it was not strictly an ethnic team. There were fans from all over Kenya. I went to Nyahururu town one time in 1988 and I was amazed at how well Kogalo players were known by the locals. They would talk about Dawo, Jua Kali, Fundi, Bob, Makamu etc as if they were classmates. Long live Gor Mahia Kogalo.

Pareyio, I can feel your passion. Gor has literally relegated the FA premier league to second tier. Why do I say this? Previously soccer followers used to cram bars watching Bolton and Fulham etc play thousands of kilometers away only to get the KPL results in the 9:00 o’clock news or the following day’s papers. Musonye of CECAFA commented on this. Of late I have been with fans (especially the young ones) calling to ask the scores of Man United/Chelsea/Arsenal matches while attending a Gor match. That tells alot about our team. We need to attract even more fans across the different ethnic groups (just like we have done on the playing unit) and make the team part of the national heritage. I have heard of cases where foreign tourists come to watch Gor as part of their local package. What more can we ask for? Let’s meet at Nyayo on Sunday and pray for the team to pick the three points

The Green Army!I’ve been a Gor fan from time immemorial (atleast according to my age), from days when i could listen to the radio for 90+ minutes as the commentators spewed Gor name after Gor name, attack after attack, goals scored, goals conceded. There were sad moments, but many joyious ones. I remember some evening in 1983, i was just 7years old but vividly, my mum and i were deeply consumed by Kogalo through the radio,yes it was a Sanyo radio, and she forgot that she was preparing Obambo (dried tilapia) for dinner. The fish got completely burnt to some black residues, and both of us promptly got a thorough beating. Gor won though, so no hard feelings against dad. I was raised in the sugar belt region of Miwani, and so i couldnt get a chance to watch Gor Live. So last Sunday, i sat next to some old guy, who was priviledged to watch Gor at City during the 80s and 90s, and i almost felt part of history when he said the attendance was reminiscent of those years. Like all revolutions, when one is ignored or ridiculed, resistance builds within and ideas develop to disentangle oneself, to find ways to express oneself in a way that passes a message to the oppressors, that you are capable of finding your own solutions and surviving all circumstances, no matter what comes your way. Last Sunday i saw the Green Army revolting, there attendance was in defiance of being neglected by SuperSport. I saw positives in the withdrawal of Live Coverage by SuperSports: the fans back in droves to cheer their beloved Gor. While i do not support hooliganism in any way, i thought to develop our soccer, we needed the fans back right in the stadium. I played soccer at the highest level for all the instituions of learning i attended, and nothing fulfills like fans cheering right beside you. The Green Army, let’s get back to the stadium, the boys need us, the standards will go up, the trophies will flow and the Supersports will troupe back, ostensibly when our boys will have raised their games, and the scouts will pick them one by one. The Derby of Kenya on Supersport
The much-anticipated Derby of Kenya between Kenya’s most successfull clubs AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia will be televised by Supersport channel 9 after all. A communication from KPL did not give any explanation for the change of mind after Supersport had ‘blackouted’ all Gormahia home matches due to crowd trouble. But the news will be welcome by the millions of fans of both clubs who may not make it to the stadium expected to be full to capacity. A consultative meeting between the two clubs and KPL on Monday resolved to put water-tight measures to maintain security and order during the Sunday match at Nyayo Stadium kicking off at 3PM. More than 300 policemen have will be deployed to provide round the clock security plus several bouncers and field stewards. Tickets will go for Kshs 500 main stand and Kshs 200 terracess, all paid in advance.(Ingwe Reporter on 19/7/11)

The turnout was superb for both sides, i can remember perfectly the early nineties growing up in Kisii, the home team was Shabana, it was always imposible for any team to win and leave not escorted by cops, despite the hooliganism, we still always went to watch every derby, we were never discouraged until soccer died and Shabana sank, then people grew hungry for fotball, you could tell this by the large crowd turnout at schools games. Gor and AFC are providing us with an opportunity to have a team to support, i hope Shabana is revived soon too. remember supporting Shabana then never meant i was a Kisii, it was passion n the opponents always make the passion grow, we need the opponents all the time, they make the game worthy watching, finally first of all congratulations to the organisors, secondly to the fans of both sides. Then i don’t believe that the total collection at the gates was 5.59 million, it must have been more or lets calculate, the stadia has a total capacity of 35000, that is if you count the sitting slots, there were 2997 VIPs=500*2997=1.49 million. on the terrace, it was more than packed to a point where even the fans were sitted on the side walks and sepparations. the slots were double occupied and fans who could not find space were dorn there on the grass, but to ignore the extras see this; 35000-2997=32003=32003*200=6.4million shillings, ticket masters can only account for 20 thousand fans in terrace attendance, the remaining 12000=2.4 million shillings can’t be accounted for. We need to move fast in improving soccer in the country, we don’t need eaters, they can’t cheat us if the stadia is packed beyond.
