Kenya Premier League (KPL) Top 8 defending champions Tusker FC registered a narrow 1-0 win over Gor Mahia in the first leg semifinal clash played on Sunday 25 May at Kinoru Stadium starting 1500 hours local time.

From a goalless first half, Tusker FC resumed and immediately went ahead thanks to a 15th second strike from Brian Osumba after the latter latched on a Clifford Alwanga through pass to loop oncoming Jerim Onyango in the Gor Mahia goal.

Handled the ball

Tusker would have doubled the lead in the 49th minute but Kevin Kimani’s shot hit the side net as Aboud Omar’s corner kick in the 50th minute was cleared by Israel Emuge.

An attacking minded Tusker FC won a free kick outside the 18 yard box after Teddy Akumu handled the ball but Kimani’s attempt hit the wall.

By the 54th minute, Tusker were still the better side pressing the visitors at the back but were yet to double the lead as Frank Ouna effected the first change of the match, bringing in Shaban Kenga for Eric Ochieng’ at the half hour mark.

Substitutions

Tusker’s set piece master Kimani delivered another corner which was headed wide by the goal scorer in the 74th minute.

Three minutes later, both teams made substitutions; Tusker pulled out an injured Lloyd Wahome for Luke Ochieng’ as Gor brought on high-rated midfielder and Aspire Academy product Timonah Wanyonyi for a faded Dan Sserunkuma.

In the 88th minute, Francis Kimanzi introduced Jesse Were for Clifford Alwanga before Kogalo’s Daniel Onyango came in for David Owino but they could not find the equalizer even with three minutes of added time.

Tusker are now one foot in the finals though will need a draw of any kind or rather a win to book their slot while Gor will be looking forward to turn tables with simply a win of any kind in the second leg set for Wednesday 4 June to grace the finals.

  • Some players need to be rested for important games. In this game we should have seen players like Blackberry, Kopany, Obwoge……….to give them a chance to play their way into the first team.

  • I totally agree with you Riaga. Today we were clueless in midfield ,no creativity at all, high balls by Jerry and incomplete passes .
we need to give other players a chance and find a cover up for Walusimbi when he has gone upfront coz most teams have learnt how exploit the space created thus causing problems to the defense.
Othwse we will live to fight another day.

  • The worst gor Mahia match I have ever seen for a long time…first 45 minutes , clueless, with players colliding with each other in the pitch, ouchhhh! That was just really poor display. The changes ouna made saved us from a thorough thrashing by tusker .

There must be a change in approach in the second leg, we don’t expect the same tactics that beat sony sugar to beat tusker….tusker is a much more polished opponent.

I would also love to see other players getting a chance e.g Pierre on the right back, kopany in the striker force and onyango and kariuki in the central midfield.

Jakoyo i totally agree with you today ,there is no need of putting three defensive midfielders and five defenders if the opponents can still penetrate them so easily like that.Let us return to the attacking minded formation one of the central defenders and one of the defensive midfielders should start on the bench so that we add more punch upfront.Other wise that was part of the game ,let us focus on our next match.

  • I do agree with all bloggers. Our game plan was poor with no creativity at all. We have a big squad and it is time players should be rotated. There are players that have played three games without resting. These are human beings that require some rest. Take for example Serenkuma and Kizito that played in Madagascar on Sunday last and played in Mumias against Chemelil.

  • Mr Bob Williamson- we love the winning attitude and mentality you have created in GM but we don’t enjoy the football. It is too defensively minded and flat. We are GM and we love our brand, tradition and style. We the regular and consistent bloggers hve a consensus on this one common and important point-: tht Gor Mahia urgently needs to make use of the whole squad. Tactically and technically my analyst’s view are not final but personal. Fielding the trio of Akumu, Kizitto and Eric at the same time makes us to hve 8 defensively minded players instead of 6. We may be a hand-full defensively, but we carry very little threat going forward using this system. Our opponents hve worked out tht Musa and Walusimbi may be good going forward but they are also poor on recovery once they lose the ball higher up the field. Their task should be to whip in crosses from the wings- but to who when our twin strikers are vertically challenged? Rama and Danny are barely 5ft 3 hence offers no aerial threat to our opponents!! We need a rethink here, sooner than later. The team’s creativity is severely compromised every time we live out of the team players like ADE, KENGA, BLACKBERRY, WANYONYI, KARIUKI and Even the injured MUTISO. Offensively the striking duo of Rama and Danny continues to feed on half or no chances because of this Mourinho system of football. How do we insist on playing high balls to short players- (Danny and Rama?). We wonder why the above named players continue to be sidelined while we suffer and struggle to create chances for our attackers.! Jared Obwoge, Kopany and D. Onyango offers us something different from Danny and Rama! They can be direct, strong, tall and forceful. We have to utilize these attributes to our advantage (plan B). Just musing- did we spend some club money to bring these players to Gor Mahia? If yes, then the coach who signed them owes us an explanation as to why they don’t play!!!! I want to believe tht we signed the following 12 players because they were better than the ones tht we released and bcz we wanted to use them. These are:- D. Juma, Kevin Oluoch, D. Onyango, R. Obwoge, Shaban Kenga, Simon Pierre , BlackBerry, Oboya Shakava,Kizito, Walusimbi and Kariuki. Be the judge if you’re a true fan of GM and tell me whether we are getting our money’s worth from all these players!!! We don’t want the case of David Otieno to re occur. He joined Gor Mahia as an internationally capped player but left a frustrated and an under utilized player having lost both his form and belief. He currently plays for the struggling Nairobi City Stars. Mr. Bobby, Players join GM to become better players not to regress !!! Under Sianga and Zico, the following players improved tremendously and earned a call-up to the National Team. These are:- Musa, Masika, Ade, , BLackBerry even Macheda and Kiplangat. Where are your players Bob Williamson!! Don’t tell us to be patient and don’t point to us the Uganda trio of Walusimbi, Kizito or Emuge!! We want OUR GOR MAHIA back, playing beautiful football, winning with class and authority while entertaining us and winning us more fans and plaudits.

It’s normal to have a bad day in office. The issue is that we should recover very fast and continue with our winning ways. On formation these things are now more scientific than we think on this blog. What we should do is to vary the formation depending on the opposition but not forgetting the saying that ‘DO not change a winning team;.
Let’s give the other players a chance as well. can’t wait to have Wiper , Oboya and BB back in the squad.

  • y do we normaly complain only when we loose.Last time we won against Chemelil but chemo were the better side & nobody claimed that our formation is wanting. We shud also know the circumstances under which we lost. Our coach whom I believe cannot loose to Kimazi also was absent. Football is about tactics & Ouna had know clue on how to contain Tusker who had trained 4r a full 10 days 4 GM who trained 4r just a day from Mumias. we shall leave to fight another day.K’Ogalo 4rever & God bless Gor mahia K’Ogalo.

  • When r we going to appreciate even when we loose to other teams? me according to my observation we burnt out kabisa due to the fixtures,we must remember that some of our players we on national duty on Sunday went to mumias 4 a very tough n fisical game on Thursday n mark u that game was played under heavy downpour the palyers came back n then off to meru honestly even if u r Real madrid u will burnout, what we could have said is that we could have played the other guys because i believe we have a very good squad that could have done the job 4 us,but lets not always cretisize just because we av lost one game.

  • the performance was good considering the workload within that week, yes i agree that in cup competitions, we shud try other players as we used to do between jerry and mapunda. anyway my beef is why the stand in coach had an arsenal jersey while on duty for kogalo, i took offense of that cos i was left wondering where his allegiance stood then, was he on the sideline celebrating arsenals success or working for the success of kogalo, not that i have a problem with arsenal or any other team in the EPL for tha matter, infact i dont care about any other team be it in the EPL or any other league. mine is one heart and i give it to GOR MAHIA FC. period

  • This is sober we should have a different squad for things like top 8 to use the full squad and give opportunity/playtime to other and always know that the priority is the premiere league this other cups are minor but by allowing tue fringe players to play in them we shall discover good players within our ranks.

When is BW back, we seriously need him back with the team. Others talk of BB not being given playing time, surely BB still require to work on his former form to earn a starting place in GM. Also there is no time for guesswork, these are professional players and if they cannot meet the threshold, we have no option but to support the coach when the time comes to offload them. You will only win the coach’s heart if you play as per the instructions, and more importantly be a team player In the GM unit. I sstill believe that Tusker FC is not an outfit that can beat GM! 4Jun, we need to cancel that defeat and restore our pride……, this is GM, I hope the coach is listening!

We all agree that we should not just lose matches and if we lose, we must offer suggestions as to why and what should be done. I agree with ppl who say we should not play long balls. Gor has been known for years for playing flowing football. You can not tell me that we win daily so we just keep quiet even if they play badly. We want to go to the field and enjoy football whether we lose or win. BW, kindly take note! we are not happy with the style of play at Gor Mahia.
