Unstoppable Gor Mahia clinch KPL Top 8

Gor Mahia continued with their Grand March to a historic season when they beat SoNy Sugar 2-1 in a hard fought encounter to win their third trophy of the season. It was not easy for Gor Mahia. SoNy who had beaten Sofapaka 3-1 put on a battle. And with Gor Mahia players showing signs of fatigue, SoNy Sugar led for most of the match after having taken the lead in the 9th minute via Andrew Sekayombya whose overhead scissors kick put his side in the lead. The hero of the day was Rwandese striker Meddie Kagere who equalized and sent the game to extra time ebfore he later slotted the winner in the 114th minute from the  penalty spot following a handball from Eugene Ochieng.

After having scored early, SoNy kept Gor Mahia at bay. Particularly outstanding was goalkeeper Allan Owiny who one could make an argument for man of the match. He pulled off point blank save after  point blank save to frustrate Gor Mahia attackers. Michael Olunga missed numerous chances and is likely showing signs of fatigue.  In the 35th minute he received a pass from Kagere but with the goalmouth begging, he could not connect. In the 39th minute he sent the ball overboard from close range. Kagere too was guilty of missing chances in the first half.

In the second half Gor Mahia, coach Nuttall replaced Collins Okoth with Enock Agwanda. Gor Mahia continued to press and maintain the Lions share of possession. In the 57th minute, Agwanda’s throw in found Olunga whose header was saved by Allan Owiny. Gor Mahia pressed and finnaly found an equalizer in the 78th minute when Ali Abondo’s freekick found Meddie Kagere who headed home.

At 90 minutes the score was 1-1 and the game went into extra time. George Odhiambo came in for Innocent Wafula as coach Nuttall continued to bring on attackers. The first half of extra time ended without incident. The all important goal came in the 114th minute when Kagere placed a well taken penalty passed Owiny in the SoNy goal.

KPL Top 8 record

Gor Mahia last won the KPL Top 8 in 2012. On that occassion they had beaten Tusker 4-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals with goals coming from Moses Odhiambo, Edwin Lavatsa, Rama Salim and Ivan Anguyo. In the final they beat Ulinzi 2-0 with two extra time goals from Rama Salim and Itubu Imbem. The KPL Top 8 was inaugurated in 2011. Both Gor Mahia and Tusker have now won the cup twice.

Just as important, Gor Mahia have maintained their 2015 unbeaten record in 2015. And yet again they did it against a determined SoNy side.

Thank-you players for the sterling performance.
I echo agrippa sentiments on results and the need for team to rest.

    Only the GorTv remains

Erokamano Ahinya, Webale nyo,Orio muno, Murakoze, Asante sana -first and foremost to the players and TB, then the fans, and yes even the “bloated” EC

Kudos team K’Ogalo, you showed great strength & character despite being fatigued by the number matches you have played this season in all competitions. We are forever greatful to God for bringing you this far.It is a feat only achieved through God’s grace coupled by hardwork and determination. We love you and appreciate you all.

  • How can fans invade and disrupt the funeral of Bokelo? They even took his coffin hostage despite the family pleading with them not to do so.. Bure kabisa! This is why Gor will never get sponsorship

@Ingo, I feel your bitterness. As it is now Gor with all their off-the -pitch issues have a better chance in landing a sponsorship than a rudderless ingwe. As they say you talk we win, we win you talk and lie continues. Even the so called red cards, off sides are already forgotten and the trophy is where it rightfully belongs. I wonder if the KPL refs are the once who went to Dar for CECAFA.

Don’t be distracted by Ingo. He is from a failing team. The least he ought to do is channel his energies to his beloved team. The team is crying out for a.savior. Lets just ignore the dude coz he ain’t worth our two cents this season. Labda next season.

    • Very true…..Ignore Ingo as well as the deceased family who had to endure watching the remains of their loved one hijacked and paraded all over the village against their wish. After all Gor is Sirka and they can do what they like right?

I do no think we need that SoNy striker for now……you realize most of the players on the local scene play as if life ends with playing against GOR just to impress once in GOR they fizzle out. Ezekiel Odera is a classic example. God need a central defender a midfielder and a striker assuming the current squad remains intact. If Sibomana and Walusimbi are still arround, GOR is okay on the left wing both at the back and upfront, there is a need for a central defender and more so if he can be utility player who can play central and right full back like Musa Mohamed. In the midfield the team is well covered …..look at the legion: Aucho, Okoth, Ochieng, Wendo, Abondo…may be Erick Johana from Mathare United to bolster the department will be good enough. In the attacking force, GOR should revive the serachfor a for the Ugandan or Zambian strikers…..I cannot remember the names….and the team will be home and dry. Our TB looks bloated, so many busybodies but I think Jerry should join the goalkeeping department training unit to allow the recruitment of a much younger goalkeeper. As a montivation and good practice, the TB should incorporate two to three boys from the youth team….this will go alongway to strengthen the youth team and motivate them to fight even harder for chances in the senior team.

Congrats to Gor Mahia. I still insist that I have not seen a performance from Gor that can make it reach the group stages in Africa champions. Beating Tusker or Muhoroni is good but there is no indication that these players want to go anywhere in the continent, apart from Olunga who has continually showed that he deserves better. His finishing is increasingly becoming next to what the lethal strikers in europe are made of. Gor should also seriously think about taking part in some of these local competitions that are only making players tired and not contributing much to the club coffers. The bench is thin and over exposing these players is getting detrimental to their overall fitness. Even though Gor players r fit comparatively to the other kpl clubs these guys still cannot match the European schudule.

That the Gor game has greatly improved cannot be denied. It caught many by surprise, coaches were quick to blame referees. Some eg Ulinzi resorted to roughhouse sideshows bordering on kung-fu. I more than convinced that most Kenyan coaches are basically cons.

I reservedly congratulate Abondo for his new portfolio item ie lethal corner kicks. In all fairness his corner against Tusker was actually a goal… combined with his freekicks outside the box. This is a gem of talent but in need of more intelligence. His passing and tackling remain his biggest weaknesses. This is one player who could have easily rivaled Aucho.

Gor seemed to struggle against Sony but again they looked tired. Sony never showed anything in their game worth writing about and should not delude themselves that they were any good. Apart from their talent in time wasting which got them an A.

It’s high time B.Oluoch got the bench. Even though a good keeper his ” I’m cool ” attitude is badly influencing the defence. Most goals being scored against Gor are mainly due to the half asleep mode that the defence keeps finding itself in.
Coach Nuttal has improved Gor greatly but he needs to show that he has other options than the Nzigieyemana path. The Kenyan unit in Gor(apart from defenders) are still very slow in releasing the ball with the biggest culprit being Wafula.

On recruitment, Gor should give priority to the Gor Junior side. Alot of players will now be angling to join Gor. Playing for Gor comes with alot of advantages even if you put aside the money issues. No player enjoys playing in empty stadiums.

Finally Big congrats to the Gor Mahia playing unit, Ambrose Rachier , Coache Nuttal and to Coach J.Ogolla for the dedication he has shown to the club.
The fans are still a big letdown to this club and basically have no clue to what their role is. Invading a funeral would make even the most willing sponsor return his money into his pockets.

  • good observation @Dinga.I don’t know if I’ve watched many Gor games to be able to see this from others; Does the Karim route when things are thick for Gor become too predictable?Anyway I hope Johana comes to add another strategy

Dinga I agree with you on many issues except on Nzigimana route. It is not entirely this route that GOR has been scoring goals….remember the left wing…Sibomana and Walusimbi have also made assists….Nziigimana’s route is just one attacing option, GOR have also scored goals from direct attacks. But remember that most the crosses from the flanks result in goals because of the confussion and mixups those come along with. REAL MADRID lost SEVILLE yeaterday – two goals for SEVILLE were crosses from the flanks. In GOR we had Sammy Onyango Jogoo who had deadly crosses from left or right and that is what made Peter Dawo what he was……in Mandela Cup Dawo scored 10 goals 9 of them from headers including the one that won the cup and Kasarani.
