Various theories advanced to explain Gor Mahia failings

In the aftermath of Gor Mahia’s  ignominious loss to Muhoroni Youth in the 2016 KPL Top 8, various reasons have advanced to explain Gor Mahia’s play which has been sub par in the second half of 2016.

Kogalo legend Tobias Ocholla “Jua Kali” insists that the club’s top brass are too busy politicking and are too focused on retaining their positions at the club’s forthcoming elections.

“Running a team involves everybody: from the office, technical bench and fans. At the moment only the coach and technical bench are focused on the on pitch issues and how to turn it around. The fraternity is on an election mood and not concentrating on the pitch and team’s performance. At this time the office should be close to the team and seeking to bring back the confidence. Far from that, people are going to the training ground to abuse the coach and heckle some players as under performers.” said Jua Kali according to futaa.com

Ocholla wants the club officials to put the elections aside until November 19 when the league will have been decided.

“Let’s politics after 19th of November when the league is over, we can campaign for the elections then In meantime let team concentrate and create a conducive environment for the team to at least hunt for a trophy.”

Indeed this year’s elections are the most critical in the club’s history as officials will be elected for a period of four years. However it is unlikely that this is what is causing the club’s poor performance.

Most observers place the blame squarely on the shoulders of Ze Maria. Former AFC Leopards coach Gilbert Selebwa is adamant that Ze Maria is out of his depth.

“Well, I do not think Ze Maria is the right man for Gor Mahia, you can tell from his tactics and fielding at times. He is solely the man to blame for K’Ogalo’s results, and I do not think the team will go far with him in charge, he is clueless.

Empty CV

When Ze Maria was hired, a club official said thus: “We have decided to hire Ze Maria because of his excellent CV. A closer look however reveals that the Ze Maria experiement was ill conceived. The Brazilian has coached only three teams and before he joined Gor Mahia, he had not held any job for more than 4 months. In 2010 He coached two teams in Italy’s Serie C and Serie D, Città Castello and Catanzaro. He did not last more than 5 months at either job. Then he went 5 years without a coaching position before surfacing at Romanian Top Tier in January of 2015. By April of that year he was fired due to a poor run that left the club in 15th position. Though it must be said that the president of Ceahlul is a volatile and impulsive.  He has hired and fired six other coaches since Ze Maria left almost two seasons ago.

Nevertheless with such a scanty coaching CV, hiring Ze Maria was always going to be a huge gamble. And the gamble has not paid off.

Fantoni apologizes

Gor Mahia physical fitness guru Sandro Fantoni has sought to apologize to fans for yet another lackadaisical performance and for what has been a disappointing season.

“We made a lot of chances at goal, we had opportunities to score but we did not and we lost the match. It is called soccer but now I’m very angry. Tusker is a good team and we hope we win the League for the supporters because they are very good people and we play for them. We fight in every match and this is the philosophy of Ze Maria that says in every match we fight and today we fought but we did not win.

-I am very sorry for the supporters because we did not win this trophy and we hope we win the league and the supporters know that we fight and we will do so to win the League.” said Fantoni according to futaa.com

Gor Mahia will play against Western Stima on Wednesday as they seek to keep pace with league leaders Tusker.

  • People going to the training ground to insult the coach and players?not in the 21st century.I come from a community who despite be primitive, they won’t accept their status and as such you can’t help them.whether in business or otherwise.so primitive even to understand simple things like what a sport.everything is handled in the stonage era style. These I’dlers should look for something to make them busy. Why would just a sport take you to stadium to insult other people who are actually in their work station?idle mind is real devil workshop.People should “grow up”Watch sports of your choice and then go and fend for your family.Others even go to the extent of calling themselves “FAN NO.1″instead of “LEECH NO.1″because they owe their current status courtesy of gor mahia jersey. This jersey has taken them places they would never dreamt of.Mamelodi sundowns was also” owned” by all the zullus until it was privatised and now it’s in the CAF final. The same with TP Mazembe.Katumbi ca?l the shots and makes unilateral decisions and they are now among African giants .We need a team that will take gor mahia along this path. For the leeches give gor mahia a break.

Yearly written peformance contracts with a recall clause for elected officials will render pitch invasions/hooliganism unneccessary as members or fans will have an outlet to address any wrongs percieved or real. Football Is About Winning Trophies. GMFC is a major club and any elected EC MUST commit in writting that he/she will ensure that we 1) QUALIFY FOR EITHER OF THE CAF TOURNAMENTS 2) REACH AT LEAST THE SEMIS OF EVERY CECAFA TOURNAMENT WE TAKE PART IN 3) REACH AT LEAST THE 3RD ROUND/GROUP STAGES OF EVERY CAF TOURNAMENT WE TAKE PART IN. Let Promises Have Consequences.

The problem is a coach who does not know what he is doing. Evidence is the below par record he has at Gor Mahia and everywhere else he has been a coach. He has been fired for incopetence. I want to ask the likes of @sylvaonyi, moses, joods, Dan Original, paw akuche etc who keep telling us that Ze Maria is a good coach..Can you guys give us ONE reason why you think he is a good coach?

We will heap all the blame on the coach,he will be sacked and EC spared but will we be lucky that the next coach will be better/good or worse/bad.I say let’s change the dynamics commit EC to performance contracts and targets will trickle down.Yearly targets will make EC work on getting the systems, TB and players that can deliver. The chairman will know his job will be on the line if he(i.e the coaches & players) doesn’t deliver certain trophies/targets hence the entire GMFC fraternity will all have their eyes focussed on the league/GoTv, CECAFA, CAF titles.

@Musymo, Ingwe used to think that the problem was the coach. They have changed so many coaches but where are they. Bonnie Ambani said that the coach is just one of the pillars of a team. The others are EC and fans . The EC of Gor is not doing great and so are the fans. We are 7 points behind Tusker (instead of 4) because we were deducted 3 points because of our fans. How comes Booby failed at Muho and Tom Juma got them a trophy?

@Dan I agree that the EC and the fans need to play our part. Still my question remains unanswered. We have seen that our coach has been sacked everywhere he has coached for underperfomance. His record at Gor is trumatising. Was he sacked at those clubs because of fans and EC? Tell me Comrade Dan why you think Ze Maria is a good coach?

It has been long since I graced this great blog of ours. We have a serious problem with our technical bench.
The kind of game we are playing is like what we used to play at primary school.
Route 1 football and 45. That is the primary form of football. What happened to our technical capabilities? When you opt for the wings and neglect the midfield, what are your expectations? Lucky goals from headers and predictable and boring football.

Ooh Laa la….” HOPELESS AND USELESS FAN-BASE IN A TROPHY-LESS YEAR”

Congratulation to Tom Juma and Muhoroni Youth fc for clinching Top 8 Cup and also Nzoia united for crashing hapless K’Ogalo out of GoTv Cup. May i also applaud TUSKER fc who are the KPL 2017 champs in waiting prior to actually winning the the title.

We should hold peaceful elections and develop strategic plan for 2017.

Good to know that Gattuso s back on training and will be available for the last few games. was just wondering. What if we lose all the other trophies and win CECAFA here at home?

  • @Musymo there is this game that I admired.A league game pitting Gor against Muhoroni in Kisumu city. The intensity of Gor was comparable to some Bundesliga or laliga teams;the triangular passing was sweet, swift and effective. We won 2-0.It could have been 10-0.That was this man’s philosophy;that’s why I believe in him
Then came mid season he says DA Silva we say Kagere,we release Aucho and bring lots of “Kau na wuoda”We face trouble and like kids rush home or sailors, sail near the. shore; We go back to what worked last year under our legend FN but alas; that has been mastered; we all know Karim will run and not cut in or pass to Wafula but try and cross himself to Tuyisenge’s head which is not Olunga’s.Tuyisenge will then waste them all.I strongly feel that with an empowered coach and scouts(if we have) who know his style of play to replace these foreigners with those who can add value and mix with young brilliant locals like Nondi then we can conquer Africa.Si sasa tuna pesa why not even buy from Mazembe the likes of Kalaba or we are still a handouts community club.

@moses, you have explained yourself well. A beautiful game it was but balanced against ten or so matches where the tiki taka full of backpasses is played in our own half makes for a very damning assessment of the coach. The coach was empowered to sign his preferred players in mid season and release the ones he did not consider technical enough. He did just that and the squad he has right now is his own creation. So the issue of lacking players is neither here nor there.

      Reply
  • @Moses kindly remind these “fans” that we have nyoroshad Tusker twice with tiki taka and that no team dares engage Gor in open play coz they know the consequences.Kpl teams have decided to be parking and waiting for the opportunistic counter attacks.Ze maria is simply focused on technical football.@moses tell them why Mamelodi s undowns are also known as ” the brazilians”Gor mahia just need two players.a technical no.6( Teddy Akumu) and a technical no.10 (like Neimar)and we are home and dry.Honestly speaking did Muhoroni play any football worth winning a tittle?assuming that that was a gotv shield final, how far would hav Muhoroni gone continentally or even gor mahia had it won that style?Do we just win tittle for the sake? This is what we are used to.Just winning titles and going no where.

@joods, nobody apart from you want good football without trophies. Second, Ze Maria’s Gor Mahia plays very predictable and boring football. If you think what Gor plays right now is attractive then try netball brother!!!

Finally, after yet again holding meetings with him yesterday he grudgingly recalls Gattuso since Wendo is injured.A truce i long fought to have him see sense and utilize but he stood his ground saying Never…Well ‘never’ has Gattuso rearing to go tomorrow against Western Stima and should he be the difference in the remaining league matches and push us forth to Title contention i will not say i told you so but might slap someone in the TB…Even Fantoni goes ballistic in the name of love for the team and is still part of our TB,i too will seek forgiveness when that time comes…

But, J’asego, shida ya Odula ni nini? The guy trained for month, “impressed” enough to be signed only to disappear like a “gini into a bottle”. Also if Gatusso can come straight into the team after a 2 month’s absence then that says a lot about the competence of our EC and TB, especially the head coach? But if that’s what it will take to win then isokei.EC is relying solely on luck to identify a good coach who can make an impact nationally, regionally or continentally. That’s why we end up with jokers like Thiago and Fantoni. So far we’ve been lucky once (FN) out of four,at least nationally and regionally. MEMBERS MAKE THE EC SIGN YEARLY PERFORMANCE CONTRACTS WITH A RECALL CLAUSE AND SPECIFIC MINIMUM TARGETS AND THIS MEDIOCRACY WILL STOP COZ CHAIRMAN OR EC WILL GET RID OF A NON PERFORMER,COACH/PLAYER, BEFORE THE MEMBERS GET RID OF/RECALL HIM/THEM. THUS MEMBERS WILL HAVE A WEAPON AGAINST AN UNDERPERFOMING EC/TB AND HENCE NO NEED FOR HOOLIGANISM OF PITCH INVASION.

Oduor12 the above mentioned player was from a very long injury lay-off and has not achieved requisite match fitness levels or commanded a display that can bust him into the starting 11 or 18…Whether it was the kawna wuoda types remains to be seen by you all since i cannot talk further

We need to engauge Jo Ndhiwa. I agree those are not normal misses. Yes, Muhoroni walked away with 1M and the trophy but the question is, were they worthy winners. If there is anything called luck, then Muhoroni were exceedingly lucky. Let us accept and move on. Team is OK. We are playing some good football. That’s my take. Awacho ka arwako helmet.

Agreed. GMFC played good football and were unlucky. If they maintain the same team and technical bench, next year they will conquer Africa.

Reasons why the year was not very good for GMFC.
    1. Change of home ground. With City stadium gor won all the games.
    2. FN politics led to a bad start- By the time he was leaving GMFC was no 12.
    3. Gor fans led reducing earns points by 3.
    4. Until some fans are always out to cause trouble since they want Elections.
    5. Every team playing against champions came with one aim -draw and win for will wildly celebrated.
    6. Fans always put Players under pressure .
Very few teams become champions for 3 time consecutively. GMFC HAS DONE WELL THIS YEAR and let us now look forward for CECAFA.
