Kenyan football fans fall under different age groups and cartels and Gor Mahia fans are not exceptional. And each cartel has different version of players’ history to write.
I don not believe one can give a complete Mighty Gor Mahia history without mentioning Technical adviser Danish Jack Jonson.
This is the only thing I find missing in this article, though it is lovely and well researched on.
Though I feel Gor Mahia team of 1987 was stronger and could go places or play for any competitive league be it Barclay premier league, la-liga or bundesliga and win titles.
That midfield composed of Abbas Khamisi Magongo, John Zangi Okello, Charles Odhiambo Otieno “engine”, George Odembo Nyangi; George “Fundi” Onyango defending midfielder Isaiah Omondi “Japollo” (spoiler) was so articulated and polished that could adjust and change to any situation depending on their opponents counter attacks.
Remember the saying Gor; four- four- four! Was the origin of this team under Coach Len Julians.
Reinhardt fabisch recruited almost this team in the Harambee Stars of 1987 for All Africa games silver medalists.
Defense was solid and composed under Captain Austin Oduor (Makamu) and the strikers were marauding lead by Peter Dawo “Omuga”
The match to be recalled was Gor Mahia VS Peter Rufai “sorry” Rufai as goal keeper Dragon Eueme -Benin. It was a second half and the whole stadium was dead silence. Throw in by Toby “Jakomalla” Ochola and flashing header by Peter Dawo flooring Nigerian Super keeper Benin side Peter Rufai did everthing to see Mighty Gor to the finals of Nelson Mandela Cup (Cup winners cup) against Esperance of Tunisia.
That photo should be one of the best photos to be in the gallery showing peter rufai beaten by Peter Dawo header.
Do not forget Eagle eyed goal keeper Davis Ochieng Odek “Kamoga” and his counterpart Taurus Omondi “tairero”
Do is say!! Strikers led by Omuga, there was Sammy Jogoo in left flank and Antony Ndolo in the right flank, not to mention Ben “break-dance” Oloo
It was wonderful. But do not forget “The six million dollar man” John Bobby Ogolla, Was part and parcel of this team.

It is sad to know that the playing ground that brought Jerry Imbo from Kaloleni has already been grabbed by our greedy leaders…..now in the current squad from the same ground is KEVIN OMONDI( Ade) keep majimbo n black mamba shinning
LONG LIVE KOGALO mayienga. the current (2010) squad magaged second place though still very tender agewise. we expect rapid maturity and abit of more signing. julius owino (awilo) the captain should join his former team mate’pro’ in the technical bench for he has become abit too slow for the pacy league.
His place be filled by a new signing preferably from sony sugar (the raster defender).
With black berry and Ngwa possibly leaving, more reinforcement is required in the striking force to supplemunt the efforts of Owiti (Macheda).
Jerry has proved competent at goal, Akumu vwry fine in mid field, musa one of the best defenders in the league, makori, kitawi,kevin, nasio all quite okay.
Coach zico the ball is in your court, we meet next season a rejuvinated side.
Thanks for the comments, 1987 team was complete that one can not mention each player, remember Peter Otieno “bassanger” George Solomon Otieno “chumb reru” were part of the team. The list is endless.
1987 was voted african best player no. 7, lead by Albert Rogger Miller of Cameroun. He was top scorer of the tournament as well. That is a clear indication how competitive the team and the players were.
1987 team won cup winers cup ( NELSON MANDELA) cup unbeaten.
Remember as well that this was the tournament that Kogalo of 1979 was beaten 9-2 aggregates by Canon Sportiff of Younde Cameroun in semi finals.
The official EPL website has a link titled “Where they are today”. Is it possible to do a similar link to let us know where they are today. Some of the people in this article were our schoolmates, colleagues, neigbours etc.
