When will Kogalo bounce back ?

The Kenya premier league has now played through 1 quarter of the season. Gor Mahia stand in the relegation zone with one win 4 losses and 4 ties. This record harkens back to 10 years ago when  mismanagement. That year in 2002 , Kogalo finished at the foot of the table. Within the first few games they had gone down 0-3 to Oserian and 1-4 to Chemelil. Okay so it is not that bad yet.  Still the current record is perplexing.

Various reasons have been given. Coach Logarusic has said the players are not of sufficient calibre. This may be his way of motivating the players and is partially true. But it does not fully explain the current predicament. How does that explain loosing to recently promoted Oserian and Muhoroni youth.Do they have better players ? Not by a long shot. And how is it that players who succeeded at other clubs have become ineffectual at Kogalo ? There are clearly some deep seated issues with the team perhaps even disunity within the playing unit.

In a bid to change things around, Logarusic has introduced a number of changes. To begin with, there is a gag order; Players will no longer speak to the media without permission.  It is nothing new, anyway, for it’s the case with most professional outfits the world over. This is a good thing. At the very least we will no longer hear empty promises from players. Of late there have been too many. Every time the team looses, a player article appears on one of the blogs promising imminent success. Let the players focus on actually bringing results instead of promising them.

Logarusic has also banned players from calling officials from their cell phones. It has been noted that players have been building alliances with officials thus causing disunity. When players are disunited, they cant play for each other and sacrifice for the team.

The players and officials were set to meet on Monday to discuss pressing issues. I believe the fans who have stayed loyal throughout deserve to know the outcome of the meetings. It is critical that the team comes up with a solution soon as there are some tough matches coming up, most notably against Sofapaka on Sunday.

Another issue that needs to be addressed soon is the rash of injuries. This was covered in depth in a previous article.

On a positive note, most fans are learning the importance of policing themselves as evidenced by the fact that a hooligan was “arrested” by fans and handed over to Police on Sunday.

When will Kogalo bounce back? Soon I believe with less criticism and more moral support, it will be, and soon.
The inability to score goals is just not normal three goals in nine league games? The investigation should go beyond the field of play, somebody could have played dirty tricks on the team, it happens and please do not dismiss me quickly. There are many people who could possibly have grudges with the team and would do all that is possible to frustrate us.Any body supporting this line of thinking?

Administrator this is a good article. The action by the coach on players as indicated in this piece are good and will yield some good outcome.

I agree with Ja Thur gi ji: something is not right. However, let us give ear to Agwa Kassam’s plea about serious prayer. The bible says that the fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Righteous men and women of valor in the K’ogalo family, it is time to rise up and stand in the gap for this club. Take time, go up the mountain and cry to the Lord God almighty to do a new thing in this team. Our God is God of a second chance. He is God of renewal. Let us plead with him for a breakthrough.

    thats how

Ochomo joined from Congo – he scored in Mombasa

    Kevin Master joined from Rangers

Salim joined from Bandari – the free kick last season at City

Denis wise – from Nairobi city stars – he played well when gor was trying to get the league in 2010

THIS MEANS THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG SOMEWHERE WCHICH IF RECTIFIED, GOR WILL BOUNCE BACK IMMEDIATELY.otherwise lets give players time to give us the right result thatwe want.

I am an AFC fan and still believe Gor have a solid outfit this season. I’ll be brutal about this. The goals are not coming out of what I would call management failure. Coach Logarusic, is not helping so far by blaming and castigating players in public. He needs to show leadership by understanding the he is an integral part of the team. When he refers to Gor Mahia as ‘they’, it raises eyebrows. Players need respect from fans and more so the coach and calling them ‘not-to-the-calibre’ is not going to help the situation when he is stuck with them till June transfer window. He is courting disaster if you ask me.

At this time, Gor’s playing unit needs more understanding than wholesale condemnation. And if the current crop is treated badly at Gor, who will want to join Gor in June with better paying teams abound?

Micah Cheserem once told me that ‘when fish starts to rot, it starts with the head’. Look upwards for solutions to Gor’s current issues and I bet you don’t need an election to fix this, but change of attitutde and management would do just fine.

All said, am sure Gor will be on the mend and will not feature in the relagation dog fight.

@Jakoyo I want to commend you for the change in mindset. Your comment in post 2 is great and full of encouragement. The WORD is truly very powerful. Let us maintain that spirit.

@Omondi your observations are interesting, thought-provoking and accurate save for the bit about “Salim”.
If I am not wrong the ‘Salim’ you are referring to is Rama Salim Mbuggus. The correction I wish to make about this lad are:
    1. He was acquired from Congo United (where he was the captain and was very instrumental in the goal scored by Ochomo against Gor at Mbaraki).
    2. Rama is one player K’ogalo does not and should not regret acquiring as he has already proved his worth. The administrator of this blog is on record to have likened the boy with Zinadine Zidane thanks to his trademark mazy runs on and off the ball.

The problem haunting us is the recruitment as you have correctly observed. What happened to our scouting prowess? If we pick a player based simply on the factors you have list @4 then as Jakoyo puts it, the digestion will always remain painful.

Our in-law @7 has given us food for thought. Thank you @Walter Onyino for your empathy and encouragement.

Ja thur gi ji, if we were to investigate off field saboteurs then we will have to be more dirty! I will not have the last word on this but i still believe it takes only humility and dedication of the team to God almighty, we do not need to know who did what but the one who can take us beyond any dirt and tricks, just as Jackowili puts it there is God of a second chance.

My fellow fans and @Walter 7, please note the following:
Our new coach is right cos he has said it right and boldly.
First, he said Gor should forget about the title but concentrate in removing themselves from bottom line and start on a new note next year. That is true and even AFC coach told his team that last year.
Second, our coach said we have a number of players in our team who do not deserve to be there. Why did we shop for them and who did it?
Third, before the Tuzo sponsorship players could be injured and back to the pitch as quick as they recover. Today a player will sit for more than 2 months with an injury but will still earn and feel confortable.
We still have to rise but only after end of this first leg when we’ll have selected 2 or three players to boost our gap.
Lastly, players must also start doing their best and motivate fans, we have done our part. I have seen the way our players react when the opponent scores. They loose hope and all of them will hold their waists hopelessly as if that is the end, learn to fight back or else score goals and celebrate cos I do believe even wherevere they (Players) stay hata wamechoka na sympathy ya ujirani.

  • Alot has been said but what we need is patience and humility. We need to be patient with the players and the coach should also note this. Our current group of players are as good as any. All we need to do is to encourage them and not put undue pressure on them. On the players side they seem tense and are not comfortable with the ball. Always in a hurry to release them. This could be due to our fans castigating them openly in the field. On us fans humility, humility is the key word. In 1985 you could be a ‘hero’ by hurling as much abuse as possible but in the 21st century and some of us think part of watching GM is disobeying all laws of decency. We get embarassed with our ladies and kids when someone hurls some of these obscenities as a past time. Footy is now a family affair and singlying out our divas and describing them in some s… innuendos is so uncouth. Have sat on the shemeji’s side for some matches and this does not arise. It’s even alledged that ‘we’ mishandled the Ulinzi lady supporter and are now paying for it. Though that’s just a myth but the thing is let’s change our behaviour and the negative perception will fade away. Else we will go to the market in June only to realise that we are the market and lose our best players.

It saddens me when the coach and the Vice Chair openly criticise the players in public. It’s true we are saying that the time to sugar-coat issues is over but let’s use some tact. Playing to the gallery and passing the buck wont do. What if the players spoke and blamed the same officials. What would be the result?

As much we are all crying tears with our poor performance, the entire fraternity of Gor Mahia are to be blamed starting from Fans/Followers, Players & Management.
Why do I say that, we the Fans/Followers should always be ready to help the players by not criticizing them every now and then, instead we should sit down with them and tell them off and what we expect from them. Whenever we have a hooligan in any match we should either beat that fan and hand him/her to the security agency. We should also appoint a “Special Crime Detecting Branch” within the fans and whenever they notice any hooliganism they arrest the culprit at that point and hand him/her to the Police immediately.
Management should not be receiving any calls from players, instead they should call a forum with them and also tell them off on their faces.
Players have a right to be heard but they should also choose the right forum and not the media. Instead they have the technical bench whom they should air their views and then forward to the Management. The coach should also in-steal discipline amongst the players.

Its called keeping the faith cos thats what you are stuck with for some period. I wonder why we think come June cre’me de la cre’me of the premier will be trotting to us when we admonish players publicly. I have already read a fan on futaa.com saying whats left is lashes on players. He commented from what Faizal said by blaming players. This guy together with Bwana should also REFRAIN from speaking to the media. Who will gag them?! We need to show love and encouragement to the players.

Any body who wants to believe this can but if you don’t you also have a right to keep your optimism. Look, you cannot say Gor players as they are now are all brats, they are some of the best( I am not saying the best ). Why, Hugo was second best scorer with 11 goals, Midenyo had seven at Tusker, Rama had a number, Ngwa is a known goal poacher, Selenga on his day can score, Lavatsa, Kevin Omondi, Makori,Tonny Nyangor,Lucky Dube and Abondo – their set piece abilities all but disappeared, and you think thats just normal.Naaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh. Whos DUNNIT then must be the question. NOW AND NOT TOO LATE.

For that matter, let nobody attempt to insult any player, never at all because if we continue to do that the way some of us are known to do, we risk having an empty stable come the transfer window in June, ALL GONE AND NONE WILLING TO COME IN.

  • @Ja Thur gi ji tell them. Some of us think players grow on trees and we just go and pluck them. Even Pascal who has no team can easily turn GM down going by the behaviours of some of us. What if we do an overhaul and nobody is willing to come in. What do we do then? As I said before now all players have more or less the same quality and pay and won’t ‘die’ to play for GM or AFC due to fan/official pressure. Let’s stop the public criticism (note the use of the word public) of the EC, tech team and players. If only some of you knew the pressure associated with putting on a GM t-shirt!! It’s very easy to sit on the terrace, chew your miraa or groundnuts and demand for a win.

Ja Thur gi ji, i’ve said what i said publicly twice in this blog. I will still say it now.

There are people who have been eating at GM from time immemorial and will do anything to bring GM down for as long as people do not bend low to them.

Unfortunately Fans have bragged before especially after we won the FKL cup about the dirt! My take is God becomes very unhappy when other gods are put before him and it is said the GM mgt entertains this, in fact i happened to attend a gathering sometimes back and it was being discussed openly by one of the current officials..Guys i am convinced God is unhappy at all this.

To me its more simpler and effective to just publicly dedicate the entire team to God of heavens and earth and Israel than go deep investigating through lowly mortals of this world. Prayers works and in most cases the team will incur nothing.

I disagree totally with the coach at belittling players openly, looking at the squad very few of them are over twenty five and i do not see a very bad player in that team deserving such public ridicule! The coach is extremely wrong, no wonder he is a globe trotter, how do you improve under adverse threats? Lets call a spade a spade.. Mr coach we want results, badmouthing players will not save you.

If anything where are we going to get those super gods deserving to be at GM, from Croatia?

I see fans and players trying their best but the EC & the new coach will just take us for a ride..i fear the worst! No wonder some now think the blog is a threat to their looting spree..what happened to the wells fargo contract? the website?

He has already made the fans believe that the players are worse than any team in KPL. Thats not true. Our players have been good notwithstanding lack of goals which I think we need to troop back to our churches and mosques to pray. The coach is playing with our psych. If the team does not perform no one will ask him cos he has already passed verdict. If they perform well he takes all the credit. This guy has to be told he signed the contract to get the best out of these players! Is someone noticing the silence of his assistants? Check my comments in earlier blog about his traits. Our players are still too young to absorb some of the pressure we are exerting them to. I can assure you that these players would play very well in a tension-free team. Where does the notion that ‘Gor Mahia players should be hardy and resolute even to insults and humiliation’ come from?

This notion of “any player joining Gor Mahia should be ready for the heat or pressure…” is a serious drawback. This school of thought is either an alien culture or is outright outdated. It must be the former because it has been an unwritten code from time immemorial that fans should not boo, shout down or make any discouraging comments about any player donning the K’ogalo jersey.

Be it in ‘Russia’ (terraces) or in the main stand Gor Mahia fans never took kindly to anyone clad in RED outfit or in a neck tie. Such people would find themselves subjected to insults and cat calls; worse still, they would be pelted with missiles and even be forced to remove these clothing that were deemed offensive and disrespectful to the spirit of K’ogalo (Okoth Jabilo can shed more light on that). However at no time was such intolerance extended to the players. A player in Gor is almost a deity, so where does this talk of “players with weak guts are in the wrong place” come from?

Why don’t we listen to @Dan? I admire and respect this gentleman for his level head. Dan has consistently advocated for players not to be intimidated. Refer to @29 where he philosophically states that players don’t grow on trees! The poor man is shouting his voice hoarse and here we are chest-thumping and trying to justify the unjustifiable. Why don’t we just listen to him?

As we pray 100% let us mention among other things, that God may restrain us from or give us the grace to subdue intolerance and humiliation of players.

  • Hello Bloggers!

Gor will rise again. What we must do is to look at our goalkeeping. Do we have a trainer? Please bloggers, take an audit of all the matches we have played recently and tell me what you saw. What kind of goals are those we are conceding?

@Creative Village your observation has been itching my brain for some time. The funny thing is they were almost identical, starting with the second goal against Tusker.

We should not shy from the true issue in GM. The truth is that we elected officials who don’t have idea about how a football club should be managed. For Gm to succeed it needs proper input from players, fans, technical bench and the EC. Compare AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia you will note that where AFC are better than GM is EC. I believe if afc was still under the leadership of Ochiel they could be either in the middle or at the bottom. In many cases Angode who happen to be the Secretary of AFc is the only one who speaks to the media about the club. In fact ask Gor fans the the members of AFC EC most of them will tell you 2, Magelo and Angode. Ask AFC Fans the members of GM EC and you won’t be surprise nearly all of them are known to them by names and the post they hold in GM. When you elect persons with their own interest to manage Gm,you just start creating problems from there. Persons who wants to communicate through the media out doing each other.Even if you get the whole playing unit and technical bench of GM to afc and bring the whole playing unit and technical bench of AFC to GM still AFC with the players we are abusing will better. To be fair we must observe the performance of each department, players, technical bench, fans and above all the EC.If we just look at the players and bench we shall make many changes but we won’t go anywhere. We want to stop the players from talking to the Officials but we are not stopping the officials from speaking to the players over the phone. This is ridiculous.I’m of the opinion that the way this officials are trying to outdo each other in the media they be extending that to the playing unit and technical bench. We blame others for recruiting a player for just scoring against GM forgetting we as fans just elect some persons to GM EC just because he/She has given Cash or equivalent to GM or we come from the same village. Lets elect the best to run GM.

  • Jackowili @50. It’s a two way street. In the past, fans would never speak harshly to or insult players and in return players would respect the jersey they were playing in. They would play agressively and fight from the first minute to the last. They would fight for every ball, they would refuse to lose and would be seen crying real tears after every loss.

These days, you have players who give up them moment the opposition scores against us, even if it’s the first half. They concede soft goals. They are seen in bars and nightclubs with strange women at odd hours of the night before an important game, etc. Such players deserve no respect from anyone and the coach and fans are right to dismiss them as good-for-nothing.

Now I agree, that not all the players in the current squad are like that, but a good number are. Such jokers need to be offloaded as soon as possible. Why babysit someone who clearly does not have the club’s best interests at heart.

  • MY APOLOGIES COMRADE O. TRAILER

In my previous post, I indicated that comrade O. Trailer is our self confessed traditionalist. I have however mistaken him for comrade Okoth Jabilo. I wish to sincerely apologise to O. Trailer. I have great respect for the two gentlemen and indeed their valuable contributions on this blog.

Comrade Okoth Jabilo, a loyal fan, critic and traditionalist. He has made my evening lively and enjoyable.

Comrades will recall that coach ZD has divided us down from the middle untill he exited unceremoniously. I don’t want us to go the same route again. Logarusic is still green in the club and need some time to understand the players. Rome they say, was not built in one day.

@53 I do agree with you.As club we should only have one person to speak to the media on behalf of the club (COMMUNICATION OFFICER)ours is very pathetic.one you will see Sec Gen again asst Sec Gen again vice chair. Please why dont we have one person to respond to media or any issue related to club?Am happy with the new coach,Instil displine to club.bravo LOGARUSIC continue with the same spirit.otherwise I still belive Gor has what it takes to come from ashes.

I watched Gor play Super cup against Tusker, then Thika United on KPL match day 1. My conclusion was that Gor is going no where this season. Why? The new coach has pointed out exactly what I posted on this blog that earned me names. A player who cannot control the ball, follow up passes, utilize gap, is NOT a football player. That is exactly what Gor playing unit is made of. Our players are overated. thats the truth.

About the coach, I said and I repeat, even if you bring Pep Gaudiola of Barcelona to coach Gor, he will not go far. Even if you bring Jesus, with the kind of “adiddas” fans we have, he will not survive.

At least now some sober bloggers are starting to see that the problem in Gor was never the coaches but players. Case in point Gattuso. He made fans hate ZD. He contributed to Awono’s dismisal. Now he realised the same tricks would not work against a Muzungu, he decided to show himself the door.

Let us support technical team. For God and my club Kogallo

  • the technical bench should also be made aware taht Kogalo players indulge a lot in alcohol. too much drinking at Egesa and Hornbill in Umoja, with another batch having shifted their drinking base to dornholm. i believe these will adversely affect the players performances it training and on match days. these surely affect our performances and results

I would like to congraculate Gor fans for the mature behaviour and patienece which we have been showing of late . To the Coach and technical bench they can recruit young and talented players from the Zonal leagues while releasing other Kigeugeu players – EFUSI did this last season , i questioned the logic then , but it has worked wonders

I must say I am sorry for the bloggers for my not so kind words on the coach. However, I request members of this blog to consider the argument I am making. First, changing coaches after every other month will not help us much. A team needs stability. This can be achieved by creating a playing unit that is familiar with each other. Looking at how Gor Mahia plays these days, you see a lack of a coherent playing unit. Second, scoring goals should not be the role of specific team. All players must be trained to exploit opportunities that come by in the game. Gor Mahia players rely on few selected individuals for their games. I am not a coach but this is my idea, Allan Wanga has worked miracles for Ingwe, has someone considered bringing back George Odhiambo on a laon from Randers where he continues to rot in the bench?

I hope the new coach is taking the team through some very intense physical training and conditioning.

I can’t stand weaklings, and currently, most of the K’Ogalo players are very physically weak and slow, no wonder they are unable to win anything.

  • The IDCC verdict is on Friday. Let’s hope that it will not be another jolt on our comeback. Though it seems we have learnt a lesson the verdict might still be painfull. It will be like punishing a child who has already asked for forgiveness and repented. Even those who were initially chest-thumping have now seen the reality of the situation. As much as GM as a team has no capacity to control a rowdy mob (which even the law enforcers are having problems with) we have to be our brother’s keeper. Unfortunately the Top 8 match is also in jeopardy (what with AFC really adding firewood to the fire) though our focus now should be the KPL league. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that our fans behaviour for the last few days including the citizens arrest in Nakuru will mellow down the hearts of the IDCC committee members.

@Benson Disi if I may ask: why this venom? Why are you such a hater? If my memory is right there is no conflict between Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards neither is there any conflict between this blog and the club you so jealously love.

Your blogs herein and elsewhere (Futaa.com) are exposing you. Yes. Exposing you so badly and have left us in fear that either there is nothing between your ears or there is something wrong with your dental formula or worse still it may be a question of poor oral hygiene.

Kindly borrow a leaf from John Cena. If at all you are literate (which I am beginning to doubt) then just do a simple thing: read the back of John Cena’s T-shirt. RISE ABOVE HATE.
