Fans raised money for player allowances

After the mashemeji derby, match, the players benefited from a Ksh 75,000 cash donation from fans as a way of saying thank you for maintaining their form despite not being paid allowances for weeks. This according to a report on goal.com.

If it is indeed true that the club has n0t been paying player allowances then it is a grave issue that the club must address immediately. A few weeks back, club official announced that the membership recruitment drive has stalled due to lack of interest from fans. In addition, the club says that the 350100 initiative has also stalled. Its time for the club officials to put these two initiatives back in gear as they have been on neutral for months now. In fact the initiative picked up steam when the club regularly updated fans in the spirit of transparency. But the club has long since stopped.

And the club still has not announced any progress they have made towards resolving the standoff with the Kenya revenue authority. Last year, the KRA contacted Gor Mahia about outstanding tax bill. The KRA claims the club was lackadaisical in its response and thus it slapped a ksh 118 million tax bill on the club. Now this year it appears the same pattern might be repeating itself. It has been four months now.

The last thing we need is for the players to adopt another go slow at a critical moment.

The fact that fans conducted an impromptu Harambee to pay players is a good thing. However it also means that many fans do not trust officials with their money and are willing to contribute if they can bypass said officials. Remember the same scenario ensued during the Solomon Nasio saga when fans organized themselves and raised Ksh 150,000 in the space of two days and the money went directly to pay Nasio’s hospital bill. This means the club EC must work harder to assuage fans who are still apprehensive about transparency.

Omondi urges further fan engagement

Secretary Chris Omondi thanked fans via social media. His message read in part as follows :

Its a known fact the club is going through very difficult moments financially, and i have always believed fans n branches can proactively AUGMENT THE EFFORTS of the officials, esp, during these hard times…..

Put differently, fellow joKogallo,i am imagining the impact a headline such as “GOR FANS PAY ONE MONTH TRANSPORT ALLOWANCES..” or GOR BRANCHES HELP CLUB PAY TWO MATCHES’ WINNING BONUSES vis a viz GOR FANS RAISE CASH TO MOTIVATE PLAYERS…..”

Bobby Defends Jerry

Coach Bobby Williamson has come out in defence of goalkeeper Jerim Onyango who has come under heavy criticism from fans.

Jerim seemingly gifted captain Martin Imbalambala the second goal when he came out of his line in the 82nd minute leaving an empty net beside him. Until that time, Gor Mahia had looked set to win.

It was an error similar to the one that gifted Esperance their second goal during the Champions league first round match.

However Williamson insists that Jerry has been doing an excellent job and should not be judged on one error.

“There is no doubt that he made a mistake and it cost us. However, he should not be wholly blamed for that goal. He has done very well for us in the past and we cannot look at one performance to judge him.” said Williamson to goal.com

Iddi Salim defends Jerry

Goalkeeper coach Abdul Iddi Salim has also come out to defend Jerry.

“I find it a little strange that fans all over have attacked Jerim for allowing AFC Leopards take away a point from Gor Mahia in the Sunday derby. He did not concede by choice, he slipped when going for the ball hence Leopards equalizer. We have even seen the best keepers in the world”. Iddi said to futaa.com

Salim also insisted that Jerry played well and should not be judged on one error.

“We need to look at the whole game where his performance was outstanding. Let’s not blame him for just one mistake that was not of his own making” continued Salim

Updates :: The treasurer is the one who is killing 350100 .Why did u stop giving us updates? Most people felt like GOR MAHIA no longer needed resources. We r a community club and the community must forever b informed of the challenges our club is facing. Why keep silent abt them.? Revive the updates omera

@Tom puts it the office , especially the SG, who has killed this initiative. We fans used to contribute dilligently every day and week and the updates were coming in fast but when the SG stopped updating us some assumed that there was enough on the coffers or the some issue had cropped up.
Keep us updated on all the media available and youwill see the contribution going up again. At this crucial part of the league we need to ensure that issues like finacial matters do not derail us from our mission.

The EC, and especially the SG, the ball is in your court. Don’t sqay we didn’t tell you. The current update is as old as May. I would say this is unacceptable. If you don’t have the time to update then you can delegate or outsource the task to some other willing party, and i’m sure there are many willing to do it.
SG, you have to do your part before you expect us to do our bit

  • The solution to this problem is simple. In the modern day and age, it’s always very hard for a club to entirely depend on the community. I suggest that Gor Mahia adopt the English style and sell the club to a financier even 50% just like Liverpool, Manchester United or arsenal. I don’t cAre if the club is owned by a mzungu if the club retains the fan base, same color and same tradition

  • COMRADES! the TRUTH shall set us free……..The truth of the matter is as we speak gor mahia squad has been depleted to just about 17 outfield players from the original 27.

What am I saying…….10 players have boycotted training all together since gor mahia stopped paying player allowances about 3 months ago.

PERSONALLY if we win this league it is all up to the coach and the fans and collectively our motivation skills as the EC has to a large extent given up on this matter.

    Let’s all work together!!!

Okongo odma. KRA does not always keep giid records. They always slap pple with these huge tax when taken to court they r drastically reduced. This happens ‘cos they du not have proper records. Almost all their penalties are made out of assumptions. 118m shud be like 30% of total GM’s income. Where did GM get that kind of income from? Let Rachier and co agree with KRA how they got this figure and arrange how to pay monthly instalments so that the club can run normally. We r ready to contribute but we need justification.

I hope as we ate asking for updates we are also foing the needful. The playets are so far givibg their end of the bargain. Now it’s upto the EC and the fans. @Jakoyo of only 17 players are training yet we had a bench of 18 players on sunday then something does not add up.
all the same ss fans ee can even rake the 350100 campaign from the EC and run away with it. We have always shown that we can do it.
even the membershop drive has been too much for the EC.
By the way wgere did @ingo disappear to?

Fans are comfortable working with their on. For sure we are willing to raise even bigger amount through Tony Anelka due to his transparency. I don’t think I can raise money through gor officials

@Tony Anelka, since the fans believe in you I trust that you can take the initiative to manage the 350100 and the membership drive on behalf of the EC.
I trust the SG and the whole bunch of EC members will not put ‘blockages’ in your way.
The trut is that the EC has been unable to provide a ‘step change’ to the process.
Getting us the paybill number and Chase bank membership drive was not enough. Support for these initiatives needed to be drummed which is what the EC failed to do

  • surely we cant suggest that the 350100 to be run by an individual, if we feel any of us is more competent than the EC, the best we should do is to elect them next time, besides nobody should be seen as undermining the EC, but everybody should compliment their efforts. there must be order and respect for institutions. as for the EC, know that you guys are under very close scrutiny from the fan base thus need to do the right thing always.

@one man branch nakuru, all we are asking for is someone with the zeal and energy to take these initiatives a step higher. The EC needs support from fans and if we can get some who we trust to do the job, why not?

I wonder why guys say they don’t trust GM officials whereas people really jumped around talking about deep pockets and such things during elections.

Could people be talking a lot of untruth about GM’s financial woes? Because from the way i look at things players are being paid their dues in time, it may just be true that the EC will manage the team..its possible that the financial ‘cry’ is being overstated.

I still think Jerry has done his part at GM, its time for him to move on..i wish he moves a notch higher in some other team.He is not improving at GM.
