Ze Maria quits

Not even the allure of playing English Premier League club Everton next month was enough for Gor Mahia coach Jose Marcelo Ferreira to stay longer at the club.

The Brazilian trainer abruptly quit his job on Thursday, barely 14 months after his appointment. In the wake of his exit, former Kenya international Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno has been drafted as the stand-in coach.

In a letter to Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier, the Brazilian thanked the club for giving him the opportunity to serve the team but did not give reasons for his decision to quit the club.

“Dear Mr President, I hereby submit my resignation request, so terminate my contract from the position of the Head Coach I have held since March 2016 to date,” he said in the letter.

“Thank you for the consideration and trust given to me by the club, throughout my working period here.”

Ze Maria has quit alongside his Brazilian assistant Marcos Aurelio even though another Brazilian on the bench, fitness trainer Sandro Fantoni is reportedly staying put.

Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier on Thursday confirmed receipt of Marcelo’s resignation letter.

ACCEPTED RESIGNATION

“The coach has written us a very wonderful letter and asked to leave. We have accepted the resignation. Zico takes over and we will convene an emergency executive meeting to discuss what next,” said Rachier.

Marcelo’s departure isn’t quite surprising according to club insiders.

It is reported that the former Brazilian international had fallen out with senior officials at the club, chiefly owing to consistent delays in receiving his dues.

As a matter of fact, the ex-Inter Milan defender went on strike last March, demanding he be refunded his Visa dues and other allowances accrued during his off the season trip to Brazil.

In his firt season at the club, Ze Maria relinquished the league and domestic title to Tusker, but but redeemed himself by clinching the KPL Super Cup as his side beat the brewers in the season curtain raiser earlier this year.

His last assignment at the club was the final of the inaugural SportPesa Super Cup tourney in Tanzania on Sunday, where he guided Gor Mahia to the title after a 3-0 win over arch-rivals AFC Leopards at Uhuru Stadium.

He, however leaves the club top of the standings after 13 rounds of matches. Gor Mahia will face Everton in a highly billed friendly on July 13.

What has be ailing Gor Mahia is poor leadership at the top that have refused to turn the club into a professional outfit. Ze Maria resignation was fourth coming as he led players to down their tools due to non payment of accrued allowances and bonuses.

I am sick and tired of supporting the team whose trade mark has been witch hunting instead of resolving disputes in a more orderly and professional way. AR has bluntantly refused to reform the club despite the goodwill he has enjoyed with the fans.

The appointment of Zico will not add any value from what Ze Maria has left and we should expect the following:-
    1. Favoring and corruption: Favoritism of players as players will be fielded based on what individual players paying Zico part of their salaries and allowances.

    2. Destruction of emerging careers and talents: We should expect Zico to mess up some careers for example what happened to Kitawi Ibrahim, Duncan Owiti etc whose careers were messed up by Zico before he was booted out of Gor Mahia by fans despite AR protection.

    3. Bhangi Smoking and drankurdness at the bench: It now official that bhangi smoking and drunkardness at the technical bench will become the order of the day as this is what Zico is very good at and the same thing forced Posta to demote him.

    4. Mabeste: This will be the trade mark at Gor Mahia as fielding will also be determined by the mabeste attitude as only Zico loyal friends will be fielded at the expense of merit. Meritocracy will be through out through the window and fans need to be cognizant of this reality. Examine the subs during his last tenure where we had Wycliffe Opondo that was to play no matter the circumstances.

    5. Poor Results and Performance: Zico’s pattern and system of football will be easily predictable from the opposing teams and we should expect poor results whether the bloggers like it or not. Watch this space and this will be the genesis of discontent from the fans as we will demand for positive performance from the team and thereafter the sacking of Zico.

AR should not play with our psychology and this just confirm the ineptness of AR and his entire executive committee members.

Unless the untoward happens we are stuck with THIS PROBLEM for a further 3.5 years. The only ridiculous thing anyone does to Mugabe is to demand their salary as a coach e.g Loga, Nutall and now Ze Maria.

Ooh Laa la…. ” GOR OSIKO TO OK SIKIE”… “COACHES COME AND ZE MARIA IS NO EXEMPTION.

I was number defender of Ze Maria for better part of last season until when i realized that there was something like a disconnect between his world view of the club and K’Ogalo philosophy. It has been my norm over a decade blogging in this site to engineer exit of non-performing ans excuses prone coach and i did not hesitate to take him ON when it dawned on me that this guy was taking us for granted. WISH HIM ALL THE BEST.

Yes i chased ZICO when it mattered 5 years ago because of his EGO then just like Ze Maria of late. And so was Anaba Awono and BW when we got fed up with excuses. When NUTTAL left i personally rooted for ZICO and i thank the EC for reading the signs and doing the needful. Now there is no vacuum in the TB and i believe ZICO has matured and will deliver the result.

  • For anyone to treat this issue as a mere change of guard from Ze to Zeddy is to say the least simplistic and is missing the bigger picture by miles
Until and unless we start asking questions on why after 8years we are still spinning on the spot without any tangible breakthrough out of our borders and hence lowering the quality bar too low , then we will continue being mesmirised every two years with populistic sideshows such as we are witnessing now.
This is not a contest between Ze and Zedi , this is nothing but a glaring confirmation that 8years on , we are still a structureless organisation with a discordant EC each in it for their own show but nourished and sustained by the sole beneficiary of that mediocrity.
Once again he has thrown the crumbs amongst as and we gobblen naively the real feasting is going on behind closed doors.
A few weeks from now it will be the now in demand Zico absorbing the insults and must go chants , it will not be pleasant bcoz ultimately it will be our club deginirating again as we await another structureless populistic resultless move…Lets be careful what we cheer.

@Teddy , ZICO knows very well what it entails to be at the helm of GM TB and if he has what it takes then well and good but in the event that it is otherwise then the verdict will be out there depending on the result recorded during his reign.

Personally I do not see any harm or cause of alarm cause of managing out Ze Maria at this time and moment. After all the writing was on the wall and it was just matter time and when but not IF he will leave. Give chance to JO-DALA to prove themselves before wishfully praying for their failure.

This foreign coaches are a burden and since we have some saving based on the two exists then why not add ZICO his take home and recruit another JA-DALA of his choice to support and we will be home and dry.

      Reply
  • @Ogango Trailer , I kindly re submit that I dont have any fundamental issue with Zico , the so called Jodala or otherwise bcoz in my submission I said that and I repeat that in my opinion this is not as simplistic a matter as a just a mere change of guard from one coach to another but a confirmation of a systemic rot in Gor Mahia that is festering right before our eyes and while we cheer the change of gaurd , its lost on us the person ochestrating all these changes is the real n substansive problem that has kept as in the same vicious cycle for the last many lost years.
AR is prooving to be someone who can deliberately sabotage the coach with the end result that our beloved club becomes the collateral damage in that matrix.
I dont see any added value Zico brings to the club but I ll put aside how I feel about him for the sake of our club bcoz afterall he is just a job hunter who finds himself as a pawn in the bigger scheme of things that he is not a part of or privy to.

@ Teddy my comrade, i really do sympathize with your situation at this moment as regards the happenings ( good or bad) within K’Ogalo. I would only urge you to soldier ON. That is how we do our things in K’Ogalo . Ze Maria resignation has nothing to do with AR or ZICO.

That is typical of us Jo-K’Ogalo and we like it that way. And it will no be any different any sooner. Do not be fooled with the likes of kina @ Jamriambo who is shading some sarcastic “Crocodile tears” and yet if you read his previous post you will note that he is the who master-minded the proposal for ZICO to head the TB as ZE Maria is elevated to TD.

If you read most of the previous post during SP-Super cup tournament in this blog-site
then you should accept the verdict of the majority and we move on. Gor MAHIA is headed in the right direction without Ze Maria. We want ownership as fans with a coach who share our world view. We want to reclaim our rightful status and past glory be it in regional, continental or local competitions.

Soon the difference between Ze Maria and this Zico will come out very clearly. I have watched football over a very long time and this is one coach I saw was teaching football as it should be played and we called it “tiki taka” and any body who likes good football could see this. This is someone who looked at players for what their skills could make them do and revived some careers where we had been shouting for long benching of some players. Sadly most of us did not like it, some say because the team was low on scoring, that’s nonsense.

Taking over where there had been three consecutive league victories was not going to be easy amid ever soaring fan expectations. But we did finish number two last season and right now we are at the top of the table. Then we decided to pit this Zico against the head coach, soon it wasn’t going to hold and it didn’t. Aren’t we the same people who chased away this man some five years back? Hasn’t he been chased away from some three teams in those short five years?

Mine is lets’wait and see how long this will last. And please let’s stop this “jodala” nonsense. What is jodala for a team that has gone national and international in its composition and which is aiming to go out and win accolades internationally? Unless we don’t want that!!

Instead of pulling hairs why don’t we give the EC and TB all the support they need. I was for Ze Maria if it came to having the international training methods and confidence in the team but if he resigns what do we do? Even the Loga we re advocating for was sacked last month in Ghana, FN is comfortable in Ghana but all coaches in the World including Mourinho run the risk of being sacked or resign. The Celtic coch was sacked in Liverpool but went to prove it in Scotland, basically winning everthing. Zico might be our Zidane. Let’s all believe
