Ze Maria: The League is tougher in 2017

After starting the league with an impressive 3-1 win over Kariobangi Sharks at the Thika municipal stadium in week one, Gor Mahia has found it tougher since then, scoring only one goal per game in the next three matches. Coach Ze Maria recognizes how tough the league is but he will stop at nothing to win all three titles at stake.

“It will be very hard this year because many teams are playing well; but we are Gor Mahia and we have to try to win. We have taken one trophy this year but we have another three to play and we will try to take them to give to our fans,” the Brazilian tactician told Capital Sport.

What has carried Gor Mahia is the availability of better players at Ze Maria’s disposal. In 2017, Gor Mahia was hampered by the departure of several key players who had played important roles in the unbeaten season of 2015. This year the squad is more settled.

“This year our level is a bit higher. We have good players and all of them want to play and this is a good problem for me because of competition in the group,” the tactician continued.

Kakamega Homeboyz for their part have blasted the officiating which they say cost them the match.

“I was surprised to see no action taken against Boniface Oluoch by referee Andrew Juma after the keeper dangerously tackled our striker Wycliffe Ochomo in that match.” said Gilbert Alushula to goal.com.

The official insinuated that Juma favoured Kogalo because he is a brother to Boniface Oluoch.

“It is very unprofessional for a referee of Andrew Juma’s caliber to allow open mistakes and I think he should not be appointed to take charge of Gor Mahia matches in the future,” he continued.

  • That teams are playing well and stopped negative football of 10-1 formations means we should prove beyond doubt we are undisputed football kings in Kenya by beating them frequently. It is something we steady did with great abandon in the 2015 season so we can be forgiven to always want our glory days back locally and having a high measuring yardstick.Best of luck coach Wangoremawahero

  • nonsense ! the least 10 years KPL has been dominated by two candidates kogallo and tusker with occassional title threats coming from mathare, sofapaka and sony sugar.

in 2017 it will be the same script but perhaps the cast will slightly change exit mathare, sofapaka and sony sugar ……enter bandari, posta rangers and ulinzi besides the usual suspects Kogallo and tusker.

Gor were very unlucky to lose to Western Stima. We deserved at least a draw. We moved on and won our next match while they over celebrated and lost their next match. The mark of a true champion in the making.

  • With teams having improved and playing well as Ze Maria says then it should be a better season for kogalo football wise since we thrive in positive football and not negative tactics of 10-1 formations deployed against us last season.Still we had dominated the local scene previously and were looking forward to continental adventures so please just win all trophies since I believe you have the requisite personnel.GM thrives on an Undefeatable Bullish attitude devoid of respect for the opposing teams.Harness that spirit and triumph like we did previously

  • Tough? Ze Maria start thinking and planning for regional dominance and serious continental inroads next year, league and/or GoTv are but mere stepping stones.GMFC has done it before and it goes without saying that, EC shenanigans aside, yours is the best (motivation,MVPs etc) side in KPL and this should be reflected in the results.

  • All Gor players have been dropped from the squad that will face Malawi. Although they will miss allowances and exposure, this is a blessing to the Gor team. They will have enough time and full house to prepare for a match against Sony who no pushovers.Ze maria must do everything to beat Sony.No mediocre performance in Gor.By the way why have they been dropped from Harambee stars?

They were dropped because Gor refused to release the players outside the official FIFA calendar .

  • Ulinzi Stars have the full potential of perching safely at the peak of the Kpl table. With those slim wins that have become our trademark scoreline, teams with serious comeback tendencies like Efusi and Western Stima will be difficult to beat. If the striking department has a problem then squad rotation should be deployed to weed out the rot. Let us not rear sacred cows in this camp, who have to be fielded even when their performance is worse than mediocre. We have been boasting of a strong bench, let us deploy it.
