Welcome back Zedekiah Otieno Zico

Zico had plenty of success as coach in 2010

It has been officially announced that former Gor Mahia full back and coach Zedekiah Otieno “Zico” is set to make a comeback to the club. This time he will be an assistant coach replacing Tom Ogweno.

His experience will come in handy in our intentions to reclaim the league title this season,” said Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier to the Nation.

Zico joined Gor Mahia as a player in 1990. In 1990 he played alongside the veteran Austin Oduor was player/coach.. In the mid 1990s he was part of one of the strongest defensive units Gor Mahia ever fielded with players like Tobias Ocholla, Sammy Omollo “Pamzo”, Paul Ochieng “Kunde” and Joseph Owino “Andai”. That defense was responsible for the fact that Gor Mahia won the league 4 times (1990, 91, 93 and 95). The team was winning despite having a very low offensive output. But thanks to that solid defense, they conceded very few goals.  Zico excelled in being a solid defender and also being able to make frequent runs on the right wing to send crosses.

The best performance that Gor Mahia has ever achieved in the Africa champions cup or CAF champions league was in 1992 when they reached the quarter-finals.  In the second round they eliminated Cameroonian giants Canon Sportiff de Yaounde. It was Zico who scored the away goal as Gor Mahia held Canon 1-1 in Yaounde. Zico stayed with Gor Mahia until the late 1990s.

He later embarked on a coaching career. He took over at Gor Mahia in 2010, replacing Gideon Ochieng “Agido”. His first season was successful and he took Kogalo to the brink of winning the league. Kogalo were in contention until the last day. This despite fielding a very inexperienced unit. However 2011 was a below par season in which Gor Mahia lost their first league game 3-0 to Posta Rangers and ended up finishing 4th.  Once teams figured out to defend against his tactics, he did not adapt new ones. A coach must always adapt and change or else the team becomes predictable.

Thus in 2011, fans started to lose patience. Zico left in early 2012 and was replaced by the Camerounian Anaba Awono. In the subsequent years he has coached Harambee stars, SoNy Sugar and Posta Rangers. He also made an attempt at political office, vying for a councillor position in the 2013 elections.

He was here and had to literally flee from irate fans. How do we expect him to succeed this time?Zico is a defensive minded tactician and what Gor needs now is an offensive minded coach. If Ze Maria could not get along with Ogweno, how can he work together with the abrasive Zico? My take is that there is not enough space in Gor for the egos of the two and sooner or later one of them will have to hit the road. Who is it gonna be?

The office do not want to sack Ze Maria….they have engaged Ziko to frustrate him so that he leaves.

  • Gor has been barred from training at camp Toyoyo due to accrued debt. This is the burning issue now and not Zico.Mugabe plus Ec are trying to divert attention. Very incompetent, greedy, selfish, lacks integrity, corrupt and therefore useless. Let them eat until they vomit but fans are there waiting. They will answer questions when we in the stadium.

Gor our beloved is fighting too many battlefronts unnecessarily so as much as I believe Zico is a very good coach, actually I rate him higher than Ze Maria due to his experience and pro-activeness…expect a tug of war over clashing philosophies and tactics/technical formation approach btn him and Ze Maria that might lead to players taking sides too as senior ones especially are disillusioned with Ze’s tactics none more currently than Kagere.

Seriously am locking myself in the toilet to have a good cry, Mugabe is finishing K’galo, surely AR must go.
How much of his money did he invest in GMFC that he must torture us so?
He just says there are HUGE DEBTS but does not answer from who, where and how?
      WE NEED A FORENSIC AUDIT!
HOW DID EC GET THE CAF LICENCE?
DID EC PRESENT FAKE ACCOUNTS, IS THAT NOT PUNISHABLE?
I hear Zico never missed a penalty. A legend and one of my best players but as a coach he is a typical disciple of Mugabe. Mabangi, divide and rule, favouristism, vigilantes and disorder.
If in doubt remember the rot Loga inherited was basically his doing.

We need to rise up and save our club from doom. Seems that is where we are headed. How are we failing to pay charges for office and training ground yet the club has a 65 million annual sponsorship from Sportpesa and another 15 million from Crown Beverages? Gor collects an average of 2 million monthly from gate collections. Something is very rotten and needs sorting out. Violence is never a viable option but what else is going to work!!!????

How I wish it could be adopted as the fans jersey. Sold like a hot cake, raised millions but not for the club to pay rent for office and training ground.
Rather to lining EC and their cronies stomachs.

Jakoyo lawyer of AR give legal defence for eating millions of shillings of our beloved club rather paying training centres and offices. Which kind of justice does fight for on behalf of injustice victims? As a layer can he now defend us against himself. What a corrupt fellow?

Just like bringing Jodala back to the club, I am and will continue to advocate for peaceful resolution on matters Kogallo and will vehemently defend AR (at whatever costs) in this blog and anywhere else. Here are my main reasons..

    1. AR is the most forward thinking leader the club has had in the last 50 years and statistics, titles, sponsorship, consistent uniform suppliers, player welfares etc speak for themselves. Ever heard any player speak ill of the club for the last 8 years ?

    2. AR has repeatedly dug into his pocked to salvage the club and stood by the club when nobody wanted to be associated with the club. For 2 years the club went without a sponsor but we matched and soldered on painfully from hand to mouth with the little resources from AR . Why do you think we got the club licencing ?

    3. AR has championed for change in the club structures for the last 8 years amidst stiff resistence from some die hard kogallo officials. his attempt to restructure the EC has been thwarted repeatedly by some known kogallo officials. Meetings have been called to discuss the bloated EC structure and new charter but guess what….officials become no- show, papers are missing, documents get lost, goons are hired to disrupt the event e.t.c etc the usual Kenya style of revolting change. Why was the matter to discuss the club charter called off by some hired goons and who hired the goons ?

    4. AR used all his powers at his disposal and being a respected lawyers, vehemently fought KRA to ensure the Kogallo debt is addressed. though most of the debt was eventually written off and some differed until the club has sound financial structure, his determination to ensure the club is successful amidst adversity should be applauded. Why do you think we are now fully compliant with matters KRA and have gotten clearance from FIFA ?

Before we complain, let us seek to understand before we are understood…AR is and shall continue to be the best candidate for this Job. The new office is just 2 months old and as usual , inherited a legacy of excessive looting and mismanagement by some Ex- EC officials ( they are known and I will withold their names for fear of reprisal ).

What we are seeing today is their legacy and their reluctance to change the status quo…….Give AR time to fix this matters, we have a new EC willing to work ( no historical baggage) and with support some of this Ex officials can even be arrested and locked up in Jail – Rio style.

There us nothing Rachier has done as you outline above Jakoyo. We had Paybill numbers wea we’d raise money to run the club and had well wishers chipping in thru harambees…Kidero donated his kilimani house that was housing the coach logarusic and later bobby Williamson…gate collections were still over the roof thereby struggled we did but it was a collective effort not one man show as you try to misguide facts here…Finally AR was still head of the past EC so bucks stops with him you can’t blame junior former officials and exonerate him…So trying to repay himself lumpsome with sponsorship money ati for days he sustained the club is totally unacceptable. We demand a thorough forensic audit of last years gate collections and SportPesa 65 Million sponsorship money

  • As a goon, I feel that Rachier has paid some tumbocrats to defend him at all costs. However they should know that his leadership style is rotten and it stinks. Even if the tumbocrat s strive so hard to hide the rot, the stench will catch up with them. Just yesterday it was rent arrears, today it is camp toyoyo!

And this was after he was tactfully pulled off from the back line trenches to move forward because Gor had no wingers with experience at that time. His position at the back was taken over by Awilo??? and the coach was Boby Oyugi with Brazilian African formation…sio huyu yenyu wa tika tika tika

Zico was strategically pushed foreword to be a striker and his position taken over by Awillo? And he was a great winger running forays in the Cannon Younde backline. The coach of the day was Bob Oyugi- a Brazilian coach trained guy.
