Profile of Jerim Onyango

Jerim Onyango is certainly Gor Mahia’s man of the moment. With a series of spectacular saves, he has ensured the club secured six points in the last 2 games.

Date of Birth: November 11, 1984
Previous Club Kenya Revenue Authority
Position: Goalkeeper
Years Active 2008 – Present

Jerim Onyango

He is Nicknamed “Jerry Jagoal”, which is dholuo parlance for “goalkeeper. Jerry “Jagoal” has been Gor Mahia’s first choice goalkeeper since he joined the club. In 2013 he was voted the  team captain by fellow players. An excellent shot stopper, Jerry has been called up to the national team several times.

He was born in Ugunja in Siaya county. He attended Kibera primary, Kamkunji secondary school and Rambula Mixed  secondary school. It was at Kamkunji that his career started to take shape.

Soon after leaving school, he joined KRA before  joining Gor Mahia 2 years later. 2011 was his best year having conceded only 15 goals throughout the season which saw him ranked as statistically the best goalkeeper in Kenya.

In 2012 he was named the runners up best keeper in the 2012 season during last year’s KPL awards

In 2013, he is yet again having stellar year, almost single handedly winning matches for the team. Should he continue at this rate he is sure to be named KPL goalkeeper of the year in 2013.

If Jerim leads Gor Mahia to the all important league title and stars for the national team, he could become recognized as one of  the club’s legendary goalkeepers like James Sianga, Dan Odhiambo, David Ochieng and Tirus Omondi.

Onyango cites Kenya International goalkeeper Arnold Origi and Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Saar as his role models.

  • David is a very good keeper, infact the best in East Africa at the moment….
major weakness : lapses in concentration.

The lapses in concentration have costed us a lot in the last few years but if he can work on these, the sky is the limit.

  • Jerim is one of the best goalkeepers in the current crop within the TPL. He has the potential of being even better than Arnold if, and only if he fixes his eyes on that goal. Needs to work on penalty kicks a little bit. Wish him all the best in Kogalo jerseys.

I think Mapunda should be credited with Jerim’s performance as he gives him worthy competition. He cant join the legendary goalkeeping ranks if he cant stand out in penalties against him. All the goalkeepers mentioned were all round. Where is the owino ottomax?

  • Kudos Ja Ugunja, it has been a good effort put for The Mighty Kogalo. But remember success comes with consistency. Lead the team to lift the league title and you will smile all the way to the bank. Your level of discipline on the pitch has been something your team members should copy. Patient and calm captain and always giving his team direction unlike the emotional Odhis who plays and coaches at the same time. Keep up brother, sky is not the limit, you are your own limit

At least for this season, Jery’s performance has been outstanding; no doubt. I wish he remains consistent throughout the season.
