Patrick Oboya Profile

This weeks man of the moment is Patrick Oboya.

Patrick Oboya joined Gor Mahia during the mid season transfer period of 2013 after a long period of inactivity due to injuries. He was unfit and despite showing occasional flashes of brilliance with his enchanted left foot, he seemed a long way off from fitness. Oboya however worked hard on his fitness and worked on gelling with his team-mates. His hard work came to fruition when Kogalo took on Thika United in the second round of the GolTV shield. On this day Oboya showed his professional pedigree. He put on a brilliant display with deft touches and superb ball control. As usual the ball seemed like it was glued to his feet as he gave the Thika defenders a torrid time with his strong runs. Oboya capped his performance with a well taken goal in the 50th minute.  He was named MVP.

Patrick Oboya Onyango is an attacking midfielder with vast international and foreign league experience. Oboya is known for his strength and dexterity on the ball that enables him to hold off defenders and charge forward. He also shows immaculate ball control and deft touches with his preferred left foot.

He was born on February 19 1987. He spent his formative years in the Mukuru Slums around Nairobi South B. He attended Kamkunji high school, the same school that had , Dennis Oliech, Victor Wanyama, MacDonald Mariga and George Odhiambo, all among Kenya’s most succesful professionals. Kamkunji secondary was a true football power during the first decade of the new millenium and were national champions a few times.

He stormed onto the scene as an exciting youngstar in 2005 when he joined AFC Leopards. Within a short period he moved to Tusker who made him a better offer in January of 2006. In 2007 he moved to Europe to join SIAD Most in the Czech top tier league. A year later, SIAD Most were relegated . Oboya spent 4 years playing in the Czech second tier. In 2012 he joined MFK Ruzemberok of the Slovakian league. He spent a season there.

In 2013 he was due to join Vietnamese side Thanh Hóa. However a contract glitch caused him to return to Kenya seeking a short term contract. In July of 2013 he joined Gor Mahia on a 6 month contract.

Oboya has made 32 appearances for the national team. His national team career has however been interspersed by long periods where he did not play for the national team due to injuries. His most memorable momemt came during the ANC 2008 qualifiers against Angola when he scored with a superb volley and gave Kenya a 2-1 over the Angolans.
