I think its been good that we have read the 1987 winners story, it was very good but there are three others I would like to read – 1. 1979 Cup Winners cup 2. The 1980 CECAFA final against Abhaluya in Malawi 3. The CECAFA final against AFC in 1985 Sudan. The squads of those years must have been very very inspiring, any body with those stories?
just like the cameroon squad of 80’s ie mbom, miller, nkono; the brazil squad of 82 of zico, the gor squads of 79 and 87 had character in every position. how gor lost to cannon yaunde 6 nil(or smthng like that) still remains a mystery. but the 79 squad was a house hold name. from oduwo ‘cobra’,hamisi shamba, ‘lule’, sammy ‘kempes’ etc. the squad of 87 was equally exiting with my favourite being nyangi odembo aka ‘atillery’ et ‘zamalek’, not to mention dawo. these guys kud beat u both home and away bila stress mingi. afc leopards had a good team in the 80’s but it was always a mystery why afc kud never perform away. i tend to believe that were it not for internal squables which always rocked gor mahia the 79 cup kud have come to kenya. from djoliba(mali),lagos,cairo,congo,togo,khartoum,blantyre… gor was known even in the villages. and i believe we are coming back… africa! watch this space.
Dinga @ 2 , the problem with this club is we have failed to evolve with time……gor was the biggest team in east and central africa , infact I wonder why some of the players did not make it to the world cup……..for gor mahia to move forward it has to start with developing the write business model for the club……am not sure if we still want to become community club or embrace the commercial angel or even do a bit of both. Once we have a structure and a model to follow, then we can bring the right people to implement it as well as develop and recruit the best players within the region. This is possible as TP MAZEMBE , YANGA, AZAM , ORLANDO PIRATES and others have confirmed. The question is what is stopping us ?
@#1 Felix Otieno was not in the 1995 team. Did’nt he leave the team as far back as 1991 having fallen out with Len Julians ?
We have to go commercial….and I get this feeling that with Kidero as Governor of Nairobi he’ll b inclined to support both Kogalo and AFC. We can create lots of employment opportunities through football….structures…investing in academies etc. Am praying and hoping.
@joe riaga he left for oman to ply his trade there but later died. He had an elder bro who played for the mighty gor kogalo in mid to late 80’s by the name Solo Otieno. All the players listed including Joseph Owino a.k.a ondayi conte and Tobias Mahira ‘gk’ played for bonde fc team while they were studying at Homa Bay High School.

The brother to Felix was Bernard Otieno who played for Kenya Breweries and Harambee Stars and not Sollo Otieno. Both were very good players.
