Gor Mahia down Kariobangi Sharks to go top

Post by faraja »

Report from People Daily

Gor Mahia moved to the top of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League table after a 2-1 win over Kariobangi Sharks at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, December 3, 2023.

Posta Rangers, who lost their week 13 match against Nairobi City Stars, have now dropped to second place after being at the summit for a number of weeks.

Meanwhile, there was a chance for Gor Mahia in the opening stage of the match when Benson Omala, the leading scorer so far, launched a low drive that goalkeeper Kevin Oburu kept out.

The Sharks goalkeeper was called to action again in the 26th minute when he managed to pull off a save and deny Gor Mahia's Austin Odhiambo.

Sharks managed to get into Gor Mahia's penalty area, and Fortune Omoto tested the goalkeeper with a close-range shot just before the half-hour mark.

There was an ambitious combination between Patrick Sibomana and Ernest Wendo, but the latter saw his attempt go wide by inches, wasting a good opportunity for Gor Mahia to take the lead from a counter-attack.
Goals

Gor Mahia's effort was finally rewarded just before the halftime break when Alpha Onyango found the back of the net with a shot launched from some distance.

Sharks registered an equalizer in the 82nd minute, with Panchol Ghai restoring parity with a header, beating Omondi, who has been one of the most outstanding goalkeepers in the season.

However, Gor Mahia were determined to get the second and register a crucial win. They pressed the Eastlands side and finally scored very late in the second half.

Omala found the back of the net, but much of the goal-finding work should be credited to Lawrence Juma for his effort to bring the ball into the opponent's box.
