Gor Mahia started their Confederation cup campaign on a solid note. But two things doomed them. First a marathon August schedule that saw them play 10 matches in 30 days left the players fatigued. Then the departure of key players; Meddie Kagere who was the top scorer and Geoffrey Walusimbi created instability in the team.

The opening leg was played in Machakos because the Nairobi venues were not available. Gor Mahia played well in Machakos creating numerous chances. Kagere and Tuyisenge were both foiled by very good goalkeeping.
In the return leg, Gor Mahia held off the marauding Tunisians for long periods. But a defensive miscue gifted Esperance the goal. Gor Mahia also weathered fan violence as the fans pelted them with objects towards the end of the first half.

Gor Mahia in the 2016 Africa Champions League
Gor Mahia had finished the 2015 season unbeaten. But at the end of the season they lost key strikers Meddie Kagere, Michael Olunga who left the club and Ali Abondo who was away attending trials in South Africa. The trip had scored 60 goals between them in 2015. With the trio missing, Gor Mahia's attack was left blunt.
There was also turmoil within the club as the club's executive committee fired coach Frank Nuttall only week before the first leg only to re-instate him days later due to fan pressure.
