Gor Mahia 1 AFC Leopards 0

Dan Sserunkuma’s third goal of the season gave Gor Mahia a hard fought 1-0 win over archrivals AFC Leopards in a Kenyan Premier League match at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

The diminutive Ugandan continued his love in with Leopards scoring on the break 16 minutes from time to give K’Ogalo its third straight win over Ingwe. Sserunkuma has now scored six times against Sunday’s opponents in the last three matches.

The match was however stopped for five minutes after a scuffle amongst the fans following Ssreunkuma’s goal. Calm was however restored and the game ended with Gor moving to third on the log with 17 points.

K’Ogalo may have walked away with three points but they were indebted to skipper Jerim Onyango who produced a man of the match display making save after save to keep out Leopards’ strikers.

For Leopards, coach Luc Eymael’s wait for a first win of the season continues as his charges failed to utilise numerous chances that fell their way especially in the first half. He has now gone six matches with no victory since he joined the 12 time league champions.

The home side settled early with left back Abbas Kiwalabye testing Onyango from 40 yards on ten minutes. It would be the story of the first half as Onyango then had to save from Edwin Wafula four minutes later.

Gor’s first sniff at goal came in the 20th minute but David Owino failed to hit the target after a sleek one two down the right flank.

Then it was back to Onyango making a save this time from Noah Wafula on 23 minutes. His save of the match came on 26 minutes as he flung to his right to keep out Wafula’s stinging drive after a quick counter attack.

Leopards’ keeper Patrick Matasi had been a spectator until the 32nd minute when Sserunkuma hit one from 25 yards.

A mix up almost gave Gor the lead on 37 minutes when Matasi and Jonas Nahimana both went for the same ball but Edwin Lavatsa was unable to hit the target from Sserunkuma’s resulting cross.

Onyango had one more save to make five minutes to the break spilling Mike Barasa’s freekick before recovering to block Wafula’s follow up.

Gor threw on Rama Salim as they sought to gain a foothold in the game and the playmaker thought he had earned a penalty after being tripped by Nahimana but the referee waved away his appeals on 62 minutes.

On as a substitute Allan Wanga then struck the upright after good work by fellow substitute Paul Were had put him through 21 minutes from time.

Were then tried his luck on 73 minutes but Onyango was alert palming it away for a corner.

It was from that corner that Gor took the lead after a lightning counter attack.

Lavatsa found Salim who skipped past a defender and even though Matasi saved his effort, Sserunkuma was on hand to turn in the rebound setting off wild celebrations.

I congratulate the team for fending off Ingwe attacks and hauling home all three points, it was gritty in there for everybody. One match at a time. Kogalo forward ever….

But am not happy with everything else, the fans on Russia side, the police and one Eyamel.Whoever reads this, whether Ingwe or Gor supporters- This is game like any other – today you win , the next you lose and life is like that, no need to lose an eye, a limb, a tooth or your life for that matter, all in the name of fanatism. After game your son, daughter, mum, dad, brother, sister, inlaws and even us your friends would like to see you about your other business, earning your daily bread, which at the end of the day is more important than the 90 minutes madness in the stadium. Yes be mad, jump, shout, laugh, cry if you want and even roll on the ground in the 90 minutes, but also let the opposing supporters do the same, but do not engage in any other primitive actions as we saw yesterday.

POLICE: Where were you? All three hundred of you? For all I know in a match like this you were supposed to provide a buffer zone between the supporters on the Russian side. This is what used to happen sometime in the past. YOU FAILED US, THE DP was there and can make his conclusions. Very poor show from the police.

  • Football will not grow if hooliganism is not curbed. We must use all manner of tools, weapons, intelligence to stamp it out. Arrest players, take photos and lock them out of the stadium. Use brute force to keep these guys out of the beautiful game. Charge high gate fees and control the gates with a high degree of security to block these guys from entering the stadium through cronies. Football is entertainment and entertainment is expensive. The actors must b paid and paid well. If football is allowed to thrive, the true fans will still pay and even though it takes time, we’ll soon fill the stadium. We can’t tolerate these hooligans forever. It must come to end and let’s be civilized. The game is more important than the hooligans.

  • Great result boys. Thank you.

What happened yesterday was expected. When planning security, what do they discuss? Don’t they expect problems after a late goal? Why do the police sit at VIP when Russia is always the home of missiles?

Personally i’m not a policeman but i could tell there was tension from the word go. Some trigger happy cop had fired tear gas when people were still queuing for tickets.

For Logarusic, now you have the space to build your team. The derby is one of the cups we look to win every season and you won one again.

  • congrats to gor. i also want to commend Owino(defender) for the display of excellent football. i thnk this was the real man of the match. i hope the guy remains level headed like ja-goal. with such display, this guy can currently fit in any european premiere league club at the moment. i hope you get noticed.

  • From what I saw some fans on our side were just wishing for chaos (This does not mean the Ingwe fans were better as they also have louts on their end). Or how do you expain a grown up spending the whole of 45 minutes hurling missiles to the other group. Did that person really come to watch? And some of our fans who you expect better reasoning from are also encouraging the lot. What some of us didn’t understand is that Ingwe was ‘comfortable’ with an abandonement as they were trailing. And we were energetically assisting them to achieve this.
Anyway it was a good show in the second half and we all know that what was driving the in-laws was the cash incentive from their stakeholders. The problem is that they only promise when the team is playing us and not when they are meeting Muhoroni or City stars.
We have City stars this weekend and we struggle during such games.

@jakoyo it is still too early. League is still not ours. Tough journey ahead. Congratulations to the entire team. However, we need to polish our passes and develop speed. Congratulations to the D/P William Ruto, he personaly walked to our dressing room after the match and motivated the team with 1/2 a million shillings.

  • WE thank God for the victory….it was a tough match and both teams played well.

I wish to echo the sentiments @jathur gi ji. We all must rise up and reject these acts of thuggery and hooliganism at all cost. What happened in the stadium was regrettable in our modern football. We will all fans learn to be patient and wait for the results.

It is time the bad elements (thugs, culprits, hooligans, opium smokers etc) within the circles of Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards should be identified and be banned for life in attending all matches.

Football is all about entertainments. We all must have philosophy of accepting winning, losing and drawing games. This is what will take us places.

On the match it is sad that once again after Ingwe dominating they end up losing our fowards have let us down kabisa high rated strikers Wanga n Baraza have 1 goal btwn them which is very worrying!

what does it take for the federation to deploy a huge contingent of uniformed policemen all around the stadium to combat unruly and rowdy troublemakers especially during derby days???
do we have to lose precious lives and property for them to realize our security is much more important than a football game??
Wake up and invest 101 percent in the security and well being of the fans!!!!

  • Now that Ruto saw the violence first hand, can he issue the ultimatums for Ingwe fans to be disarmed.

Otherwise victory over the semejis is always sweet. Donge.

But we must work really hard. My take, we never got the Cat’s head in the Kube as we had hoped. it was roaming freely in the mid field and too long range shorts at will. Looks to me that what they were instructed.

  • wether eymael is a gud coach is a wait n see situation. afc plyed well but luck discipline in some characters. i thnk some of them thnk they are bigger than the club. the form-dip on a.wanga speaks volumes for someone who was once a goal getter. masika is not even being seen anymore. my advice to leopards is that they have to play this way till the end of the league… if that display was a one match thng then the worst is yet to come. but i still thnk the afc camp has poor player discipline and an equally bogus office.
the reason why there is always someone demanding an election or trying to remove the current office bearers remains a mystery. this has affected players negatively as can now be seen. mentally, i don’t thnk the players showed any dedication- it’s just a football team, so to speak. the desire to belong(pride) needs to be seen in the eyes.

  • @Bill Wabz, you are right AFC was more threatening throughout the game. But that was all. Once they noticed that they were not going to beat Jerry using long range shots they should have changed their strategy. As Gor we know Ja goal is weak on crossed aerial balls (though of late he has improved) and that’s how Ingwe beat us 3-0 in late 2011. But that time Baraza was also sharp. Just including him because he always scores on a derby was far-fetched thinking. Though he gave us a tough time. I like the way Ingwe charged at us. Could be the many bonus promises. I hope the team maintains that tempo and not only when the Shemejis meet.
On Gor we were always going to trouble the Ingwe back 4 with Danny and Lavatsa upfront and their fear of Danny is also their undoing. Otherwise it was one the most entertaining derby in recent times. Not the lopesided ones. I remember when Gor played against Matasi for a whole 90 minutes until Demonde Selenge beat us with the only attempt at goal. Unfortunately for Ingwe the only stats counting is 1-0. Ingwe’s Shots at goals are just tha as well as Gor’s possession. Now Ingwe has Ulinzi while we have City stars. Both are tough matches but Ingwe will be under pressure to beat Ulinzi yet the soldiers are also big game players. For Gor I know City will come to fratrute us but that’s the nature of the game. I know we will win that one.
On hooliganism, it looks like these louts need to be contained before they mess up our good game. No action ever taken on them. Yesterday while separating the two teams, they were still watching as the goons were hurling missiles just next to them. And looks like tear as is no longer a threat to the fans. They have become immune to it, the just look for water, dilute it’s effects and life goes on.
I hope the CCTV that was promised will yield something and we see some people in court to answer charges. I hope I’m not dreaming

  • Congratulations are in order for a job well-done. At the same time I want to point out the following- we are not out of the woods yet. Three wins in a row will go along way in calming our nerves but Gor can do better and we expect them to do better. I want to pick out yesterday’s performance with a tooth- comb and rate our players. Every player scored 7 and above for their efforts. For this match, LOGA was spot on tactically and that’s what won us the match. Leaving Rama on the bench and only to introduce him in the 2nd half was a master stroke. With the opponents tiring and fatigue setting in, mistakes were bound to be made. This is exactly what happened in the 73rd minute of the game. Leopards relentlessly attacked us leaving themselves exposed at the Back. From a corner kick taken in their favour, they lost the ball at the edge of our penalty area and we duly obliged applying the 6 seconds counter attack rule. In such scenarios there are no better players than the three musketeers- Rama the BRAINS, Lavatsa the LUNGS and Danny the HEART. With lighting speed Lavatsa swept the ball forward and found Rama with a sweetly weighed pass. Taking two Messi like touches Rama left the chasing defenders for the dead and let fly under the despairing challenge of A. Kimani. The diving keeper managed to get a hand to the ball and in the process wrong-footing his defenders. His touch was too weak as it only pushed the ball towards the onrushing Danny who did not need a second invitation to strike the ball home. He swept the ball into the net with aplomb. Gooooaaaalll, screamed Bernard Otieno and Ghost Mulei both of Super Sports, the commentators of the day. The side of the Terraces occupied by the Green Army was engulfed in endless and jubilant celebrations while Mashemejis felt hopeless and beaten. Rama the (brain) had done it. A few minutes earlier Rama had been denied wht appeared to be a blatant penalty when he was felled in the box by Nahimana. To finaly play a big role in the goal scored by Danny felt like pure bliss for Rama. In conclusion, I would appeal to LOGA to have a good look at the performances of both Akumu and Owino. Why is Owino’s performances improving while Akumu’s has stagnated? While at it he should also come up with a system tht will accommodate Anguyo in our playing unit. I would hate to lose Anguyo to any team in the KPL. He Has qualities tht we are currently missing in our team. His height, strength, work-rate and Adaptability are some of the desired qualities that this team still needs. Please pursue Pinches and bring him back to Gor Mahia in June. Well done LOGA and the team.

Congrats boys for the derby victory. However, something needs to be done urgently about the midfield. Iko shida hapo. Kogallo is lacking a match marker. If they could land a player of Gatusso’s caliber in the middle of the park, we will be home and dry. I admired the way he was patrolling the midfield for Tusker during super 8.

For God and my beloved club – Kogallo

  • Good game and congrats to the boys. My dissappointment is with the midfield. Akumu has dipped in form and his body language shows. Does he have an injury? I have watched the reply to the game twice and i can tell you the lad needs a pep talk. The coach yesterday was spot on. Our weak link seemed the left wing which Wafula and Baraza exploited at will. Afc feared using Owino’s side. All in all we need to look for an attacking midfielder like Kahata or Pinches

  • As I congratulate Sirkal for subduing shemeji, I fully blame the security team and management for the scuffle that ensued among the fans especially at Russia side. Not everyone who goes to the field goes to watch football. Unfortunately for us, the mind of a man is not triable, for even the devil himself knoweth not the mind of a man. The only plausible way to avert hooliganism in Kenyan football is to improve security apparatus in the field. Me thinks that as fans we must now demand value for our money in terms of security. We must be assured of our security in the field as we watch our beloved Kogallo delivering painful 90 minutes compulsory football lessons to squirky opponents in the field. The number of police officers must be increased, and their positioning made strategic. Unlike their counterparts in other jurisdictions who face the fans throughout the matches, our security men in the field spend all the 90 minutes enjoying football and even cheering. We want to attend these compulsory Kogallo lessons with our wives and children (lest we be accused of failing to meet the one third gender requiremen) and we must therefore demand security. I refuse to believe that the fans in Shemeji derby cannot be controlled by a properly organized security apparatus. I refuse to believe that the blame to the rampant holiganism in Kenyan football is to be placed squarely at the doorsteps of the fans. We are not hooligans, we love football, and we pay for it. No one has the ‘hooligan’ badge embossed on his forehead. The contract we must now sign with the football managers is that we shall pay the fees you ask of us, and you shall ensure us of our security in the field. No more no less. Soon we shall mobilize fans and petition football management both at the club and national levels if this shoddy security apparatus persists. I remain loyal to Kogallo.

Let the stadia management invest in cameras for match reviews all over the pitch. As fans we need to let police do their job and lend them support where necessary. Why to we have to pebble police while arresting one of our on? Its high time we help in identifying even our brother whom profess the hoollinganism faith and hand then to the police for onward parading then in court like the dog fucked girls of MOMBASANI then the vice will deminish as of yesterday
