Dream start as Gor Mahia sink Thika

It was a dream start for Kogalo to the 2012 Kenya Premier league season. They beat Thika United 2-0 in a season opener aka milk derby played at Thika municipal stadium.

Despite missing several regulars who were missing for various reasons such as Baldwin Ngwa, Edwin Lavatsa, Ivo Mapunda and others, Gor Mahia’s depth of talent came through.

Two players whom fans have not seen were amongst the key performers. Anthony Otieno Nyangor played a key role in the match opener. His cross was deflected by Moses Otieno and found Dan Makori who tapped home. 10 minutes earlier, Makori had come close but his shot hit the upright. Gor Mahia led 1-0 at halftime. And Makori seems to be making good on his promise to help end the goal-scoring drought that plagued Kogalo last year.

In the second half Gor Mahia started as they ended the first half. Collins “Gattuso” Okoth sent a long ball to Hugo Nzoka who was also making his debut. Nzoka beat the advancing Thika keeper with a well taken finish.

Second half subsitute Moses Odhiambo aka Lucky Dube twice came close to making it 3. But his efforts were denied by the THika goalkeeper.

The start is a stark contrast to the previous two seasons when Kogalo’s early season form was sub par. Fans hope the club can keep up the form.

Gor Mahia: Jerim Onyango, Kevin Ochieng, Yussuf Juma, Ivan Anguyo, Donald Mosoti, Collins Okoth, Ali Abondo, Moses Otieno, Hugo Nzoka(Moses Odhiambo), Anthony Nyangor (Kiplagat), Dan Makori (Rama Salim)

wow that was incredible and confidence was there. i guess given more time the team will do great. what the coach needs to work on is our reaction when we dont have the ball i find this a little wanting and this was our undoing against tusker. otherwise that was a great showing from the boys despite the bumpy field. the young lad nyangor has great potential and truth be said he is a great signing.

Two clean goals and not set pieces simply implies that the scoring capability is finally here with us. The bumpy pitch really let down Ballotieno and Hugo Nzoka down. Evidently there is hope for better times ahead.

Ali Abondo, Dan Makori, Moses Otieno and Mosoti did a splendid job not to mention Lucky Dube and Rama Salim “Zidane”.

All the talk and chest-thumping by the teams during the pre-season is over – TIME FOR ACTION !!
WHAT A WONDERFUL START, considering that several of the lead players were un-available. The depth of the team is just something to write home about……

  • Bravo Guys. You and Zambia made my day. Now we need to focus on the Mozambique match, hopefully with all our players healed. Every year our problem has been consistency. If we can get that right then I don’t see why we cannot win this year’s league. The only other thing is for us not to be carried away. As we win now we should also remember that we will (might) lose to other teams whether small or big.

Great battle Kogalo, you put ‘skin in the game’ and grabbed the most important headline, 3 points! And we loved your game, because in a bumpy pitch away from home and in hot acrid conditions, you fought your hearts out and made our trip a joy. Kogalo has thrown the gauntlet, who’s gonna challenge? Game recognize game. Game ibambe. Bring on Muhoroni Youth.

  • Congrats once more.

I have always believed that Sir Alex Ferguson’s secret is that he plans well. At the beginning of the season he looks at the table and finds teams which he must beat, teams he can afford to draw with and teams he can accept a loss to. Finally he looks at the number of points needed to be crowned champions.

Awono and co. must try to do the same. Look at the home games, away games, all opponents and try to get all the points that history shows are needed for the title. With this system, it’s very easy to audit performance at any stage of the race.

Bravo Green Army, Bravo team. All the best with continental assignments over the weekend.

What a great way to start off the season with three maximum points and two goals!

The lion is back on it’s feet. And our worthy competitors including our perenial rivals, Ingwe, better be warned well in advance. First, may I salute teacher Makori, the flamboyant forward from Ndururumo primary school for providing the opening goal. Two, our new signing, Hugo Nzioka through his goal stamped his authority on the forwardline.

The game was generally balanced. Ballotieno was equally impressive upfront although he failed to convert several chances. This is understandable given the lad is playing at this level for the first time.

My belated congratulations also goes to the Chipolopolo of Zambia for lifting the orange AFCON prestigious trophy infront of thousand of spectators that included their former president, Dr K. Kaunda and millions of viewers across Africa. There was no better way to homage to their fellow countrymen who perished in a plane crash. Now the spirits of the departed ones should be allowed to rest peacefully.

Africa has once again proved beyond doubt they can. My question when shall Nairobi also be a candidate of this football showpiece? Is the Goernment really listening?

for the two games i have seen moseti playing, i feel that he still has a long way to go. poor passes and clearance nearly costed us.
Moha should go back to his position. where is Nasio?

@ Post # 24 Albert Kosero I though we were suppose compare notes after milky derby as you had promised earlier. But your take is as good as mine. Let the bench field the best options available depending on the strength and weakness of the oponents without undue pressure from any quarter.

It is quite in order to hear former K,Ogalo players doing very well wherever they are, the same case applies to ZICO. Even Barcelona are currently feeling the heat La Liga due to poor way match records apart from the EL CLASSICO against R. MADRID and so AA must up his game in every match and aim at a consistent performance from the onset.

I think some bloggers are being irrelevant with their postings. The coach cannot field all new players together due to the fact that they have not gelled which might take several games. Please mabloggers let us support the team and do not put unnecceassry pressure on the coach that so and so should have played or why so and so was played for only 5 minutes. You see we have now a very big squad that can play anywhere withour the fear of burning out certain players.

Eventually I know we are going to have the first eleven.

Its great victory after Tusker game where various mistakes were noted by majority of fans. Thanks for good fielding by technical bench and accepting different ideas echoed.Good team accepts criticism and corrects immediately. The forward line was sharp like razor and angry for goals like hyenas, midfield was very much composed with gatuso and moses otieno.otieno is good dribbler and always move balls to strikers.mwalimu is ever aggresive and eager to score, just polite reminder to technical bench lets not convert kevin ochieng to defence he has good pace and power to tire fullbacks in front, lets just bring back nasio to no 2 and improve him to move forward, anguyo is good because never stay with ball for long and you noticed moseti was not over worked unlike in the previous game.Otherwise, kudos kogallo we love the club thats why we criticism

Personally, I am afraid, because what I saw from yesterday match is not anywhere near continental football. All is not lost though, this is a team for next year’s continental not this year. @Albert Kosero, this is a great team that needs to gel together soonest. The squad is big and very good. I’m giving a cautionary warning that our fans are demanding a lot within a very short time. As the common norm dictates that new players will always take time to pick up and settle in the pattern and rythm of the game. I do confirm that the quality is there but time will tell whether we are ready or not for the continental or KPL competition.

@papamiky, ndugu we are not fighting. We just need to understand that sometimes it is difficult for new players to settle immediately in the team but Rama is going to be a great player to Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars this season.

  • Due to work commitments, I did not get a chance to watch the match so would not objectively comment on individual players’ performance. On the matter of rating the performance of the players, its a good idea, but should be done with care as some postings might be very subjective instead of being objective. An independent and quality rating of players should be encouraged as it allows the same players to evaluate their own performances through the eyes of the fans. This is practiced even in the more advanced leagues ie. EPL, LEAGUE 1, PRIMERA LIGA, the GERMAN BUNDESLIGA and SERIE A. Thank you very much and God bless you.

And thanks AA for playing Keving Master in right back. Our full back positions are now manned by great players and we will terrorise and stretch defences. Yesterday i learned in Thika that Kevin started out as a right back from those who have watched him for long, he is my man for that position. Thanks for listening to us on this blog.

  • I saw Prof. Wenger turn mid-fielder Lauren Etame Meyer into a solid right-back. He turned one time wingers Kolo Toure and Ashley Cole to become the solid defenders that they are today. I hope our own prof. Annaba Awono is going to do great wth the project he has started. Turn Anguyo into a formidable central defender and we wl have adequate nos in that position. If he can turn Kevin Ochieng into a right-back then Nasio wl have competition. M Mohamed is suited 4 central defense bcs he can easily read and pick-up runs of attackers. He is not so quick as to take-off and recover lost balls. Pls stick him in the middle of the defence and he wl prove to you how good he is. Pls the mid-field is done and dusted. Thank you.

@ # 11, Comparing ballotechwa to Oliech is folly. Oliech is a once in a lifetime kind of player. He was already the best player in Kenya at age 17.

On another note, virtually none of the current players is guatanteed a first team place. I hope this is good for the team in terms of creating competition. But it could also be problematic in terms of building cohesion.

@Joe Riaga, the lad is only 18 years not far from Oliech. But for sure the boy wit right training has all what it takes to be a lethal striker. He has the following qualities:-
    1. talent,
    2. body,
    3. height,
    4. physique,
    5. strong in the air,
    6. pace and speed,
    7. trickery,
    8. very skill-full,
    9. very mobile,
    10. dribbling skills,
    11. can shoot with both legs etc.

He is also very strong on aerial balls with wonderful dropdowns. He can also help in defending set pieces as well as helping the midfielders. This falling back will even make him difficult to mark by opponents. No defender can try to bully this player both in the air and on the ground.

Above all Baloteli can play as both left and right wingers (attackers) as seen by his mobile movement. This will make him very difficult striker to mark by opponents.

These are the in credentials required from a striker and I can assure bloggers that very soon many foreign clubs are going to come calling for Baloteli. This lad will go places very soon. I thank he can play in EPL, Bundesliga or Serie A.
