A major step in the battle against hooliganism
A man who claims to be a Gor Mahia fan has been sentenced to six months in prison for assaulting a security official at Nyayo stadium. I say “claim” because if such people were true Gor Mahia fans they would not be engaging in acts of hooliganism that ruin the club’s name.
Senior principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi convicted the accused after he pleaded guilty of the offense, magistrate saying the vice was on increase in the country and the sentence was necessary because the accused was not remorseful.
“I therefore, sentence him to serve six months without option of a fine to serve as a lesson to those who may intend to commit similar offences,” said the judge.
Okello admitted that he on January 1, 2015, assaulted the complainant — Benjamin Opiyo — by hitting him with a metal bar on his forehead for refusing him entry into stadium. The incident happened on Sunday during international friendly match between Gor Mahia and Power Dynamos of Zambia.
The court was told that the accused was in the company of other individuals, who had planned to force their way into the stadium to cheer K’Ogalo without match tickets.
Fans like Okello are the worst kind. They do not purchase tickets, they buy fake jerseys and then misbehave right in front of the TV camera while wearing those fake jerseys. Worse still they ruin the club’s reputation. Fans like Boaz Okello are the reason Gor Mahia struggles to attract sponsors.
Undercover Police
Club official Naima Oketch has announced that the club will now deploy undercover police to arrest the perpetrators of hooliganism.
“We have engaged undercover police to help us in fighting hooliganism and one by one the perpetrators will be arrested and handed over to the respective arms of the law. The club is losing potential sponsors day in day out and things must change. We must polish our image and be acceptable to all stakeholders” said Naima to the club site.
She also called upon other fans to join in the battle against Hooligans
“So much effort has been put into fighting this vice before and we are not going to tire on this. We are also calling upon our peace loving fans to work with the club and help us uproot this vice once and for all. Let’s be our brother’s keeper and also tell a friend to tell a friend, personally I am meeting a group of fans on Saturday to spearhead the campaign and hopefully this time we will win the battle” she added
The vast majority of Gor Mahia fans are peaceful. It just so happens that there are a few cancerous cells within the fan base. Hopefully this arrest and sentence makes them think twice before engaging in acts of hooliganism.
Admin please bring this article up so that we comment on it properly.
This kind of action was long overdue. We want to see more and more of this so that we keep them away. Most of us are decent supporters and would like the club’s name kept unsoiled by these yobs. We badly need sponsors and the sooner we clean up the better. There is nothing that sponsors abhor like wearing their brands and engaging in silly behavior as some of us do.
There is a comment by “Compressor” in the previous article which is in bad taste. Some of these people he is criticizing have taken the club to where it is now having grabbed it from the jaws of death some six years
when we could hardly raise 100 supporters per match and we were all the time looking like relegation candidates; they won the league twice and are still working hard unless that Compressor and people like him were born yesterday.
From where i sat, i could see at least five of these hooligans. Where are the rest? Why were they left to walk away? Please Gor Mahia stewards, if we are to win the war against hooliganism, we can’t have people favoring their estate and village mates. Arrest all of them. These guys were trying to break the gate from the inside.
All the same, i support the first sentencing and would like to request the club to set up a policing unit and save themselves all the fines and bad publicity.
ARREST EVERYONE WHO MISBEHAVES IN THE STADIUM OR ON THE STREET. THEY HAVE A LOT OF ENERGY WHICH ARE VERY USEFUL TO DO MANUAL WORK IN PRISON.
WHERE ARE THE REST COZ HE WAS NOT ALONE. THOUGH THIS IS THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I HOPE HE WAS NOT JUST ARRESTED BECAUSE HE INJURED THE POLICE.
IT SHOULD NOT STOP WITH HOOLIGANS ALONE, EVEN THOSE STEWARDS WHO COLLECT BRIBES AT THE GATE SHOULD BE ARRESTED. THEY ENGAGE IN CORRUPTION AND THAT’S A CRIME TOO.
“The vast majority of Gor Mahia fans are peaceful” Kweli?
Stewards be warned!! Taking bribes at the gates gonna end sooner than.later..
