Kenyan champions came into the match as favorites after impressive run in the competition but John Bocco and Kipre Tchetche scored for Azam FC

Gor Mahia’s 24 match unbeaten run in all competition came to a sorry end on Sunday after they fell 2-0 to Tanzania’s Azam in Cecafa final played in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Kenyan champions came into the match as favorites after impressive run in the competition, but goals from John Bocco and Kipre Tchetche were enough to hand Stewart Hall first title for the club.

Gor Mahia will blame themselves for the first goal as they started in a low fashion as compared to the home team, who had fans cheering the side from kick-off, and the pressure paid off as early as 15th minute when Bocco converted a low cross to hand his side the lead.

K’ogalo were unlucky to escape punishment when Khalid Aucho seemingly elbowed the opponent, but the referee decided to have a word with him when punishment seemed necessary. That however, did not kill the spirit of Azam, who kept the competitions top scorer Michael Olunga at bay, with no space to make things even for the fourteen times Kenyan Premier League champions.

The only realistic chance the Kenyans got was in the 28th minute when Ugandan import Innocent Wafula shot wide from seven yards out. After the break, Azam came looking determined to maintain their record of not conceding in the tournament, as Pascal Wawa stood strong in central defense which further frustrated their opponents.

Frank Nuttall’s side looked out of ideas in the back as pressure from Tchetche and Bocco was too hard to handle, and they were lucky not to concede a second in the 50th minute, when the former was gifted a chance but failed to convert.

Aucho finally went into the referee’s notebook when he fouled the dangerous Kapombe 25 yards from the goal. Tchetche rose to the occasion and buried the resultant free-kick into Boniface Oluoch’s goal to the amazement of the custodian, who assumed the shot was off target.

Dangerman Olunga was sneaked in by Meddie Kagere in the 75th minute, but this time round, the ever clinical lanky striker could not find the net as he shot across the goal. Nothing changed for the Green Army even with the introduction of Ali Abondo and George Odhiambo, as the side could not find way past the opponents defense that has kept a clean sheet in the entire tournament.

    1) To my Brotha Barefooft. You disrespected the legend Mahmoud Abbas by saying that he would eat a humble pie. It looks like you and your brethren are the ones feasting on the pie. how is it tasting ? lol Don’t forget that Abbas won three consecutive East and Central Cups . These players have won none and therefore cannot even seat at the same table as the Legend Abbas…Do you remember Leonard Mambo calling the games especially when it went to penalties? ….Abbas Ameokowa !!! Abbas Ameokowa!!

    2) When Gor beat KMKM and some of you were bragging that Gor has defeated a “big” team, I told you that KMKM is like a Muhoroni. Big teams are the likes of Azam (AFC). You now see.

    3) Surely how can Gor loose to a team that is in Pre-season form with new players who haven’t gelled yet? I mean the likes of Wanga have just arrived and didn’t even play. I wonder what could have happened if Gor would have faced Azam (AFC) ithat was in mid season form. 5-0 maybe?

So far so good the money collected has reached 5million. I therefore demand that gor office clears all arrears owed to players. I don’t want to see those habits of Afc office here where they collect money from hArambees n put in there pockets n not paying players. again am eagerly waiting to see how much nyanza governors n kidero, nyanza mps n senators, nyanza mcas n business people will reward gormahia. Also am expecting 1million from our new leader Rosemary Odinga mtoto WA raila . only fools will nag about gor performance. Gor won virtually everything except the cup, gor won best team, gor topped on scoreline, golden boot, golden gloves, best coach n many others.

It’s with pity that a blogger like @ingo can mock some bloggers n going to an extent of refering Azam as Afc leopards this a typical Kenyan whom takes credit from anywhere to substantatiate himself in any case what is there to smile about Afc leopard . Gor players have endured meagre tokens in the name of part salary to reach this far n coming against money bag Azam the lost the game psychologically is like seeing someone eating food u are remaining hungry.

Well done however without battering an eyelid we must make hard choices as regards goalkeeping and the midfield.
That said and done the uphill task of retaining and improving on this talented squad is finances especially payment of salaries and allowances on time.
We need ventures like Gor Bread & Gor Sacco to start having a real & visible financial benefit on K’galo.
Again Kudos that was a spendid effort.

Yes, we lost, but i am proud of my team, i am proud of my Kogalo, i am proud of our players, 1979 we reached continental finals, 1987 we won continental trophy, and today that was a great achievement, slowly by slowly we will be there, our biggest challenge is how to maintain these squad till next year CAF competitions, also lets thank God for reaching the finals.

Kudos to the team. Though we lost we gave a good account of ourselves and looks like we were the team to watch in the tourney. You could see how Azam were proud to have gotten a piece of Gor in terms of the t-shirts we swopped. Now let’s come back and sweep everything in front of us.

    Kudos again to the team

I take this opportunity to congratulate the team.

AZAM outplayed us due to complacency but that is football. We should never underrate our opponents; we thought AZAM was that easy and it turned out to be a real stumbling block to our trophy ambition. I hope we have learnt and will now embark on our KPL matches.

@ Ingo I don’t blame you for celebrating because you were supporting teams playing against Gor and now that we lost fair and square you are free to celebrate. We live to fight another day. It was not a matter of do or die.

The only team Gor beat of substance on the way to the finals is Yanga; by the way, dont forget that Yanga is also in preseason form as their league is just about to start. Beating the likes of KMKM and some Djibuti teams is nothing to boast of. If you had beaten, say Express, sportvilla, Spotsvilla, Simba, Elmerikh, APR etc, then yeah you can say getting to the finals is not easy

  • we tried.I think the club should get a central attacking midfielder to partner with Wafula in order to avoid over dependence on our wingers or high balls. This game required that we literally feed Olunga and Kagere with the ball at the goal mouth coz just like I had dreamed and woke up not in my elements I new Azam would “Mathare” us.

  • This tournament has shown some good players and not so good ones in Gor.I will focus on the good ones that we haven’t fully exploited;1-Wafula-he has grown since Yanga game and can take lethal shots 2-Omino-can be a speedy winger with good delivery to strickers. Those are the only ones I spotted.

a lot of inexperience showed by many of the players who are young…. Innocent Wafula shot too high on two clear occasions, Eric Ochieng wasnt relaxed, Sibomana was unsettled in the first 50 mins… Olunga too missed a great chance… They are young lads.. remember Azam has reached two finals and one quarter final in 3 years am afraid the TB also showed inexperience by not changing our game plan through-out the match… but am not alarmed, its a young team and growing in experience and just like Azam our time will come… We all wanted the trophy but wasnt our target initially to get out of the group stage???

Ooh Laa la… @ Barefoot Bandit and all bloggers we should worry less. Two steps forward and one backwards but we are still marching ON. After all Nutall never promised US the trophy but only BONUSES

“Yaliyopita si ndwele tugange yajayo” meaning not far is that far,,,

    1. GOR MAHIA JERSEY is The 2015 CECAFA BRAND OF THE TOURNAMENT:
Yes AZAM won the championship but GOR won the tournament, the hearts and mind of all & sundry and what a way to prove than AZAM players lifting the CECAFA CUP with GM branded jersey at the expense of their own sponsor.

That is a statement in its own that they unexpectedly and professionally robbed GOR MAHIA the tournaments favourite in 2015 CECAFA champiuonship but next time in Zanzibar WASAHAU….!

    2. Thanks Nuttal,TB, players, fans, bloggers and not forgetting all the bloody-haters and super-lovers of this glamorous club including all those suffering from the K’Ogalo-maniac and K’Ogalo-phobia symptoms in this blogsite. Ule ana diahorea ya manano chafu kama @ingo a.k.a Benson Ndisi zidi kuhara hadi hio kundule / olundi ipasuke.

3.Though the officiating was not all that good but had we deployed Dirkir Clay instead of Ochieng and Agwanda instead of Wafula in the remaining 30 minutes of the second half and then Used Shakava upfront; AZAM was very much beatable. With GOR we will just go very far into the infinity as the GIANTS of the AFRICAN soccer as long as we pull together. .

The outstanding statement of inspiration to this team is that ”even the tallest skyscraper started below the ground”. There is much to be proud of in this performance even without the trophy in our cabinet. From the persistence of this ‘ingo’ creature, some instinct affirms to me that he is an adult but from from the sensible point of view, there is proof beyond doubt that my neighbour’s dog exceeds him in intelligence, pound for pound.
This Pharisaical echelon of reasoning was assumed extinct with the crucifixion of our saviour but two millennia later, the devil has transformed one of those possessed pigs into a human being capable of spending time [from his ever lonely wife and futureless kid] thinking of fresh comments to torment Kogallo fans.
Next time my grandpa constructs a chicken shed, I’ll request him to enlarge it to create space for ingo’s brain since it yearns to be there.
Alternatively, iI think disposing you will be acting in excess since your level of reasoning tends to give us a clue-you are capable of fading with time, given the inheritable folly that has succeeded through the ages from your grandparents, now in you then unfortunately this regrettably scanty brain will find its way into your son! What a disaster!
Unless you spend time thinking of how you can catch up with those jungle warthogs in thinking [at least they are better than my neighbour’s barking dog], you will be destined to spend your life trailing unborn primates in brain functionality.
You can hit back at me if you have the guts, here is the open platform for such a war. I wonder why Barefoot bandit and Mwakio have been soft on you.
Come on ingo, there goes your role-model hog into its hiding den, please pursue it so as to learn. It’s high time your wife deserved a better brain than this which she has borne long enough. Do her the favour my brother.

I believe we lost fairly and cannot discredit our beloved team.

As OGANGO TRAILER says I agree that it is true with Glay and Agwanda playing the last 30 minutes, we could have equalized at worst. Our substitutes came too late and not the right subs. Why was Gatuso not given a chance yet our mid was weak and we kept on playing fruitless high balls upfront?
