Indiscipline rampant in Harambee Stars camp

Stories of indiscipline within tha Harambee stars setup and out of control players that have been swirling in social media have been confirmed by a Daily Nation report. In fact none other than Gor Mahia custodian Boniface Oluoch has indicated that there is a gross lack of discipline within the Harambee stars playing unit.

“It is a fact that we have serious issues in camp but then again it is difficult for the local-based players to approach a colleague and talk to him. But then our senior players seem not interested in helping us out, so the problem just grows.” said Oluoch to the Nation.

Harambee stars players put on a shoddy and complacent display against Zambia in front of a large crowd that had massive expectations after the Stars had forced an away draw against Congo DRC.

A daily nation report suggests that at about 10pm on September 4, a Harambee Stars player walked into his room at a Nairobi hotel accompanied by an unidentified woman.

According to multiple sources within the team, the two chatted for a while while consuming alcohol. The woman then allegedly lost consciousness and moments later, the player invited two of his colleagues to the room.

It’s not exactly clear as to what happened next. This was two days before the national team’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Zambia. Needless to say the team’s camping rules prohibited a player from consuming  alcohol, drugs and bringing female company into the hotel.

Police confirmed a disturbance at the hotel involving the drugging of a woman. “Someone alerted me to that case. But then it was very difficult to establish a case and investigate because nobody officially came here to record a statement”, said an officer at Nyayo Stadium Police Station.

Such was the level of indiscipline in camp before Stars played Zambia.

Kenya’s assistant coach Musa Otieno confirmed that a crisis meeting to discuss disciplinary issues was held at the Nyayo Stadium dressing rooms immediately after the match.

The players then went on to have another meeting at the team hotel before breaking camp.

Stars assistant coach Musa Otieno added: “I am still very disappointed with these reports. We might have not got some aspects of our game right against Zambia but then, our players let us down.

“The technical bench is already trying to change all that.”

Former Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson who now coaches Harambee stars was very keen to confirm why he had dropped the players. “Yes, there are some players I have left out of my team because of their behaviour and I do not intend to recall them in future,” Williamson confirmed. When asked what the players had done, the Scottish trainer responded: “Ask them!”

In a separate interview with the Standard, Williamson admitted that Jesse Were and Danson Kago were dropped due to indiscipline.

“We have dropped Were and Kago due to disciplinary issues. I will not allow players who have no discipline in my team.”

This now explains why Were did not see playing time against Zambia despite being the top scorer in the Kenya Premier League with 19 goals. Kago for his part was in trouble even before the Zambia match as he was arrested for domestic violence.

Other players who were dropped before the Mauritius game are Dennis Oliech, Humphrey Mieno ,Paul Were, Sammy Mejja (Thika United), Danson Kago, Noah Wafula (Tusker), Wycliffe Kasaya (Nakumatt)and Gor Mahia’s midfield general Collins ‘Gattusso’ Okoth.

Following their sub-par performance against Zambia, Kenya plumetted 15 places in the FIFA rankings to position 131.

Now their poor performance against Zambia makes sense. I blame technical bench and team captain for not being able to rein in errant players. Remember Logarusic’s statement about rotten potatoes.
