Dawo: Gor Mahia must aim for clean sheet

courtesy of goal.com

The retired striker, who helped Gor Mahia to their first ever continental trophy, insists they must not concede if they hope to eliminate Esperance of Tunisia

Peter Dawo, the hero, who steered Gor Mahia to their first ever continental trophy – Nelson Mandela Cup – in 1987, believes K’ogalo have a daunting task when they take on Esperance of Tunisia in the first round of Caf Champions League on Saturday.

Gor Mahia beat the North African side during the final in 1987 with Dawo scoring in both home and away legs, scoring in the 1-1 away win, with the 90th minute equalizer being the only goal he scored with his foot, from 25 yards out.

But the former striker says it will be a different ball game altogether because Gor Mahia has many new players, who are yet to gel in together. “I watched them play Sofapaka in the Kenya Power Charity Cup early February and I was not convinced by their team work.

“They have many new players and that means their integration is yet to fully take shape. If they had almost the same team they had last season, then they would have been better.” Dawo told Goal.

“I believe it will be difficult for them because I am not very sure that their preparations were the best. North African teams invest well in their preparations.”

Dawo insists Gor Mahia should be wary of the Tunisians’ physique, speed and intelligence. “Tunisian players are very fast; they are intelligent and are physically strong. Gor Mahia should not play soft and they should go hard at them. Getting a good result at home, especially keeping a clean sheet, will be a great plus to their ambitions to qualify.

“Playing away is very tough. Though in our times they never treated us badly (though we carried our own food), we experienced very bizarre officiating and they should expect that as well going to Tunis for the return leg.

“During our times, we only played for passion and got results out of that. But now, these players are promised good sums of money for winning and scoring goals. I believe it will give them the extra urge to work harder and it will be in their favor.”

We can meet financial Obligations: Kilo

Gor Mahia vice Chairman David Kiilo has moved to re-assure fans that the club will still be able to meet its financial obligations despite the pullout by Tuzo.

“Gor Mahia is a brand. We have a large following and if we can properly manage what we have, then it should not be a problem. If fans can turn up in large numbers in our every home match like they did in Machakos and we manage the revenue well together with our proceeds from merchandise we should be in a very strong position.” He told michezoafrika.com

“There is no club in this country  with a massive following like Gor, secondly, when we win our weekend match against Esperance, you will see corporates falling over themselves for K’Ogalo pie” so many corporates interested in working with us and the modalities will be agreed upon” he continued

“We are just calling on our fans to have decorum and to behave themselves and portray an image worthy of Gor in our matches this season.

Mr. Kilo, Why lie !…Gor has many projects on the book shelf that are yet to take off; for example building a stadium. If indeed you have the mechanism of raising such amounts of money to cater for the club, then why didnt gor turn on these financial engines when Tuzo was still funding the club and use the surplus to fund special projects such as buying land for Stadium and building one? Either the clubs managemet is incompetent for not raising funds for projects using the methods you have discussed while Tuzo was stiill on board or you are not telling the truth. Which one is it bwana Kilo?

Its game 5+1 & things r looking up.
These have been our real preason training. The first game against Sofapaka jolted the TB/players reality.
Esperance is a tough call but surely they will be anxiety on their side facing the team that denied them the trophy in ’87.
Dawo you guys were great, a final is not a 1st round match & you won.THANK-YOU LEGEND.
Kilo, Org Sec, please walk the talk. Bloggers usually misunderstand when I say this but fact is AR, Kilo,Ngala, Okuku never raised the issue of…

Tuzo pullout (though they obivously knew abt it) during the elections just the other day.
So just resolve the issue of finances.
As Ingo says u missed an opportunity 2 build on the Tuzo period so now EC is faced with tough times especially with TB/team showing potential. Fans will not take kindly non payment issues.
Adopt accountability, transparency in GM operations plus security @ home games & ua comments will come 2 pass.
Bloggers my challenge is we start the bloggers branch cum coop ourselves.

  • Clean sheet is indeed important. Defenders must keep 100% concentration.

On another note, i must say the EC has surprised me this year. I have been a follower for a while and the manner in which they are operating without begging is simply commendable. Booking more than 30 people in one of Nairobi’s finest hotels for 4 days is not as easy as it sounds. Even CECAFA and FKF got stuck. They managed to host Bitam and made travel arrangements for a 16 hour flight to Gabon without a harambee. Thumbs up AR and Team. Keep the focus.

Finally, i now agree with those who say that our in-law who prefers to live with us Ingo is Benson Disi. Your post @2 has betrayed you but it’s good that you sound smarter on this side unlike on futaa.

Corruption! corruption! corruption! So how old is mariga? How old is Wanyama? How old is oliech? How old is Rama salim? How old is Israel emuge? How old is Allan wanga!………………………………

Former FC Talanta boss Jerome Dufourg has termed extensive age cheating in the country as the greatest impediment to growth in both youth structures and national team.

Speaking to serieaddicted, Jerome explained in details of various cases that he witnessed when in Kenya and the other cases across Africa where players have been forced to ‘adjust’ their age when getting travel documents in search of greener pastures abroad.

    Corruption

-Having spent one year working in Africa, I am well aware of the malpractices in the system. I know of a player who is training in Europe right now and showed me two different passports. Same day and month but born in 1992 and 1995. Unfortunately, in Kenya, corruption levels in the Federation are so high that there is no youth national team, he said.

According to Jerome, 70% of the players are faking their age, if not more. Using an example, he sited the annual U19 KPL Tournament as also having being infiltrated by the cheating problem thus beating the intention and purpose of the tournament in the first place.

Jerome blames his outspokenness for his job loss but insists that the matter needs to be discussed openly so that the problem can be dealt with to allow the youth structures growth.

Jakoyo Here we discuss gor mahia issues and not age of individual people, it is only their parents that can know their date of birth so give us space with your sentiments.if jerome himself never mentioned individuals name and talked generally on age cheating, and here is you mentioning the name of players,if they cant do their work to cub age cheating please give us space we don’t want to dwell so much on individuals private life.on Saturday match let us fill the stadium to give the boys support that is what we can do best, otherwise let us meet in the stadium on Saturday bloggers.

Jakie! Come out and shed some light about yourself.

I heard that the Tunisians were in Bitam to study us? Well I can surely bet that they made special note of Jerry Jagoal and have been training overtime on how best to fire past him.

That Jagoal has been under their scrutiny is obvious as is confirmed by Jerry’s injury that as Oduor12 correctly noted, is a very rare occurrence. The question is; how far did they go in their endevour to subdue Jagoal? We know that in 1987 they took Peter Dawo’s photo to a mosque for special incantations. Maybe, just maybe, could they be behind Jagoal’s recent injury? You may ask how? My answer is through sihoho (blue tooth). Ingo what do you call it back in the West?

Fear not boys. With or without blue tooth, you shall prevail over Esperance and for that I am very certain.
