Gor Mahia edged out Bandari 1-0 in a tough Kenyan Premier League match played on Sunday at Mbaraki Stadium, in Mombasa.
Gor were on the attack as early as the third minute when Mungai Kiongera chased a long ball and in the process his high boot connected with Bandari keeper Wilson Obungu resulting in a serious head injury for the national team keeper.
It set the tone for a charged first half during which Kiongera, Edwin Lavatsa, Jeremy Bright and Raphael Okello all went into the referee’s book for rough play.
In the 21st minute, Gor’s new signing Eric Ochieng took aim from outside the box but it flew over the bar. In the 28th minute, Shaban Kenga managed to go past Gor defender Christopher Wekesa, but just as he was about to release the ball, Donald Mosoti slid in to concede a corner.
The breakthrough came for Gor Mahia in added time it the end of the first half when David Owino powerfully headed home an Ochieng corner.
In the second half, Bandari appeared more structured and even made several threatening attempts at goal, the most notable being a clean shot from David Tevelu in the 68th minute which forced the Gor keeper into a good save.
Bandari were reduced to ten men after Bright was red carded after a second bookable offence for fouling Paul Odhiambo.
Kiongera almost gave Gor a second goal in the 84th minute, after receiving a great pass from Dan Sserunkuma, but he took too long to get his shot away and failed to hit the target.
Well done nyam nyam they were busy talking through out the week that they will beat gor now they have gotn agood one keep it up boys. The remaining one is thika which we should beat at kasarani.
Congrats again. To be home and dry all we need is to replicate the second half performances for the last three years. It’s good that BW will find the team one place behind the leaders but with an advantage of having played less games. Thanks JBO for holding forte when Loga absconded. We hope you will develop a good working relationship with BW for the sake of the team and not pursuing personal agendas to the detriment of the team. Let’s also work on the team cordination. I watched Ingwe and realised that while we have the individual good players they have the team spirit. If we can get that team spirit working we will sure reap the benefit. Today I saw a lot of hardworking spirit from all the team members which was good. But one thing is why did we release Yusuf Juma? In the Bandari game that area of our team was the weakest link that they were trying to use
That’s a good result and am also particularly happy for Sir JBO and we are placed in a very good position when B.W takes charge.
As usual i end with plea to K’galo fan to elect qualified former players into office we have the likes of Obwka, Lule, Siango etc
Kudos to the K’ogalo players for proving their determination to get three points.I hope that Sir Bobby williamson will start work on scoring bcos our striker r still shy infront of goal and they cant score even an open chance. Take the case of Kiongera given an open pass by Sserunkuma just to complete . When we only use defenders to score then it shows that our strikers are not getting there acts right. Pls Sir BW let K’ogalo be a high scoring team.I would love to see K’ogalo hitting teams 5 or 6 goals.
congratualtions galore
Gor mahia is simply not scoring, they are relying on dead ball situations to score goals….very dangerous, very dangerous !!!!I watched mike khamati goal’s against thika united and I wonder where is our scouts…this guys has been banging over 15 goals a season in division 1 until ‘EFUSI’ finally snatch him……so over to you Bob Williamson, you have to overhaul our strike force.
That was a very spirited performance by the whole team. Keep it up boys. Let us look at individual performance- Jerry 7. Had very little to do the whole afternoon. Dealt well with the few shots tht came his way. His distribution was good and commanded his area very well. Must ensure top level concentration. Bandari almost got an equalizer at the death when everyone at the back went to sleep.
2. The defence – 8
The high pressure game brought the best out of the defenders. D. Owino keeps on improving game after game. The FACT tht he scored the winning goal goes on to prove tht in him Gor have a dependable player. He is the FAbio Canavaro of Kenya football. He times his tackles to perfection and rarely gives the ball away. Mosoti continues to impress with his take no prisoners attitude. One player tht the National team selectors keep on overlooking. A Very industrious player who wears his heart on his sleeves for the team. Musa Mohamed mixes style and graft. Subdued all the attacks on his wing. Escaped a red card for a high boot challenge on Jeremiah Bright. Overall, very versatile as he can play across the back four. Played on with an injury though the coach had Nasio on the bench for cover. Wekesa encountered a torrid afternoon as he had to deal with the quick and nimble footed Shaban Kenga. Copped well and neutralised the attacker in the 2nd half. Stayed back the whole afternoon as our game plan was for the defenders to stay Back and absorb pressure.
3. Midfielders – 8. The trio of Njuguna, E. Ochieng and Rama were fantastic this afternoon. You need to watch the replay of the match to appreciate this. They worked like a well oiled machine, covering Every blade of the grass. They offered protection to the defence especially E Ochieng and Pablo. Rama stayed closer to the two and acted as the link man to the attackers. E. Ochieng was a joy to watch on his return to his former team. He assisted on the goal as his sweetly delivered corner was headed in powerfully by Calabar. Rama, the brain of the team was a little hindered by the system of play as continuously had to track back to offer support to Pablo and E. Ochieng.
The Attack- 7
I was disappointed by Kiongera. Late on, he was presented wth a golden chance from Danny’s sublime pass to seal the win. He
Over indulged and wasted the chance when his feeble shot hopelessly went wide. P. Odhiambo ran the channels well but due to lack of a defined role found himself in the centre. Rather than stay wide as envisaged by the coach, Paul found himself occupying the same centre as Lavatsa. Failure to have a designated leader at the tip of the attack meant tht GM had very few shots at Bandari’s goal. The wing play from P. Kiongera and P. Odhiambo was completely missing. If we are to trouble teams then we have to employ the use of natural wingers. Danny’s ball retention capabilities helped to create a chance tht Kiongera lost by shooting feebly wide.
The coach -6
JBO, during his playing days was an accomplished and cultured defender just like Calabar. As a coach he is obsessed with ultra attacking formations. E. Ochieng and Pablo though versatile, are both attack minded midfielders. Why was Emuge And Teddy not even on the bench. Yes we need our best players everytime, but rotation helps with the durability of the players. Anguyo and Emuge need game time if they are fit. Mosoti and Owino needs a rest. Over to you BW, please give everybody An equal chance.
@jakoyo, your comments are misplaced and loop sided as goals. Riven great teams score through dead balls. However I agree with you on our scouting methodology. Bobby is known to have dismissed some players due to their body sizes and lack of stamina.
@6 your your analysies of the match are good as they are informative. I think to be fair with facts, despite Gor geting the win, Bandari were the better side in both halves. Our strikers were blunt without any threatening shot at goal. I think in yesterday’s we should thak our defenders for containing and stoping the marauding Bandari strikers. Our couch was too slow to substitute. Lavatsa, Paul and Erick were candidates of substitution before the sixtieth minute. All in all Im proud of the three points.
its great that we got all 3 points….and thats what matters most.however,my other desire now is that the team plays entertaining soccer with matching results.againt Bandari,we were disjointed and played without purpose at times. If we cant entertain, then am ok with winning ugly!!!
My concern is that we sem to be playing Lavatsa out of position. The boy has the pace but he cannot use it since he is no longer being played as a striker or winger. All in all Bandari had the better of possession football and so did Thika when they played Ingwe. ManU has been known to win even 5-0 but with 40% ball possesion and Barca losing with 70% possession. So I think the issue is how we take advantage of our scoring chances. What delights me is that we now have good cover in all positions and can win with Kevo, Viera, Besigye and even Danny on the bench. The defence is good but Wekesa tends to struggle if he gets a swift Winger. One person who could have rejunivated our attack is Bageya who single handedly is carrying city stars. All the same we are on the right path
@Dan, before the transfers closed, i kept on asking that we sign Bageya whom i call ‘Suarez’ but our scouts knew better. This is one talent that should be in Kogalo. Anyway that is water under the bridge and we need to work with what we have.
I must say that yesterdays game was the solution to teams locking their defenses. When teams come to Tok Komwanda we need to be ruthless in the first 30 minutes and we will always go home smiling.
Finally congrats to the team and to all the Green Army members who spent their money and time to give our boys the much needed support all the way down coast.
Good that we got the points but bad as long as our strikers will not score and they have indeed been disappointing, now even including Kiongera!!! Paul and Paul, please give us the goals; Dan ,Lavatsa, Rama please give us the goals; Oboya please come on and give us the goals. Can technical bench find a way of using K14 more often to open up hard defences for the strikers?
Next game is Thika and perhaps they will take it to Thika, now see what Ingwe did to them, why do we panic against such an average team?
The left back position will cause us pain very soon; many teams have noted and are putting pressure on Wekesa and I don’t know where the solution will come from now that the transfer window is closed. Ingwe had a similar problem but see now how well they addressed it; we went asleep as we were releasing Yusuf Juma, that was a natural left back.
Well, done kogallo for the win.I believe kiongera is very aggressive player cos oburu was so desperate not to let the goal and opted to put his head for foul, otherwise,it would have been obvious goal.Bob you took so much time to inject new subs.Kevo,Serru.should have come in very quickly for lavasta and paul odhiambo. For defence, wekesa tried cos that kenga is stubborn fellow. He managed to mark him very well in Nrb.
I join fellow bloggers in congratulating the team.
.With all due respect, Bobby Ogola MUST move and get a club to develop his career to the next level as a coach than waste time at this team growing white air while WHITES make a kill of earning BIG SALARIES equivalent to 7 times what he is earning!
well done boys, just keep it up game by game just like the second half of last season. so proud of you.Mwakio vipi, najua nimenyamaza sana hata mimi. The incoming coach us a great one and I only hope for better things going forward.Thanx folks.
bobby pliz help bring the best out of anguyo,he was the best defender last season.sad to watch him struggle this season
