Gor Mahia go down in Mashemeji derby

Gor Mahia went down 1-3 to AFC Leopards in the first mashemeji derby of 2014.

courtesy of futaa.com

Joseph Wanyonyi  volley from inside the box   gave Gor Mahia the lead before Jacob Keli equalizer in the 35th minute  followed by Charles  Okwemba header  and Bernard Mangoli  73rd minute strike marked a first derby win for Coach Hendrick de Johng.

Gor Mahia’s goal came from forward Dan Sserunkuma’s run who broke free from the left wing to float in a cross to Timonah Wanyonyi who took his time to pick his place past an incoming Kasaya to send K’ogallo faithful into a frenzy.

It did not take long for Leoprds to hit back as a build up from Ingwe defence found Charles Okwemba at the middle of the park, whose pass split the Gor defence to meet an onrushing Jacob Keli who moved clear to fire past Gor’s keeper Jerim Onyango for Ingwe equalizer in the 35th minute

The 49th minute saw an ever overlapping Godfrey Walusimbi combine  well with Gor’s goal scorer Wanyonyi to pick Rama in AFC box. The forward low connecting  shot went wide with Kasaya seemingly covering his lines well.

Austin Ikkena almost ended the first half with a goal for Ingwe after  David Owino failed to clear out a cross providing the Nigerian with a chance  to head home but an outstretched Onyango made a timely save to prevent Gor from ending the half a goal down.

Second half action resumed on a slow pace with much of possession concentrated at the centre with occasional burst towards goal.

Clearance blunder

Martin Imbalabala 55th minute clearance blunder saw Eric Ochieng nab the poor clearance to play in Wanyonyi whose chip  never troubled Kasaya, going out for goal kick.

A 59th minute foul on Okwemba by David Owino in Gor’s left back position  saw the Ingwe midfielder notch in Leopards’ second goal with a slight header touch from Abdalla Juma’s free kick.

Last twenty minutes saw Kevin Omondi’s introduction pushing Gor forward and dominating the proceedings as AFC cut out the attacks before playing out long balls to their forwards.

Gor came close after Jackson Saleh lost his footing in the box with Wanyonyi breathing down his neck but a timely recovery saw the defender prevent the winger from winning possession of  the ball.

Third goal

A trailing Gor Mahia opted to intensified attack at Ingwe goal but it was Ingwe who took  the advanatge of the situation to lift a long ball to Okwemba that resulted to AFC hitting on a counter attack for the third goal.

The veteran midfielder through pass to find Ikkena was first cut out but his second choice,an incoming Bernard Mangoli saw the midfielder chest down the ball from inside the box before burying in a low  shot past  Jerim Onyango with the ball hitting the cross bar before nestling into the net.

Third goal seemed to kill any lingering hopes for Gor  winning the tie. Bobby last cards saw  Herbert Kopany being  introduced in place of Rama Salim in the 77th minute as the Premier league leaders succumbed to their heaviest defeat of the season

Starting XI; Jerim Onyango, Musa Mohammed, Israel Emuge, David Owino, Godfrey Walusimbi, Geoffrey Kizito, Eric Ochieng’, Joseph Wanyonyi, Rama Salim (Herbert Kopany77’), Dan Sserenkuma and George Odhiambo (Kevin Omondi 67’)..

AFC Leopards were better side technically. Our Booby tactics were wanting. In a game against AFC Leopards, you need a stronger defensive and offensive midfielders.

This new pattern of Bobby has been checked by both AFC Leopards and Tusker. We need midfielders that can fall back and help our defenders. Many times our defense was exposed by strong AFC Leopards midfielders and attackers.

If we continue playing like this, I can predict that the second leg will be very difficult for Gor Mahia.

From my own assessment, Wanyonyi despite scoring the goal was non-committal throughout the game. Goalkeepers is always making stupid errors, defense was leaking, midfield was dead with Eric holding the balls for too long and got tired. Owino was off colour, Emuge was off colour etc.

It was only Rama and Serunkuma that played their hearts out. The rest of players were passengers. I do not see Gor Mahia winning the league with Tusker, Sofapaka and AFC coming stronger in the second the leg.

  • Really unfortunate we lost today. The players gave their best shot depending on their ability. I must say this as i have said earlier and this is my opinion; what is killing us is our midfield and poor defensive techniques. The players are generally tooooo slow for the modern game. Look at the last two goals by AFC there was a huge gap between the midfield and the defense. This happened during both games against Tusker.
We need to sign strong tactically speedy midfielders. Gor mahia has become predictable and that is the sad thing because we play the same players match in match out. Its by Gods grace we still clear at the top and the transfer window is about to open but then again is this office upto task. What a sad day jokama

  • Kudos to Efusi, they have a very tactically savvy coach and it showed.

    Positives….

    1. At least somebody else is standing out and be counted in terms of goal scoring. Sserenkuma has played his part this season!

    2. George blackberry like his name, blackberry, this guy is gone, it’s sad how talent got wasted like that and he had 65 mins of play time with zero shot on goal. Time to show him the door during the transfer window, pole sana…nothing personal !

    3. The last time players were played salaries and bonuses was in March 2014, good to see that they have the zeal to come out and play hard and strong like they have no issues to deal with outside football.

    Negatives…..

    1. Midfield is still wasted, ochieng and baba play the same time of football and they fall too deep with little attacking flair, I would like to see this area overhauled with the likes of onyango and kariuki on the bench. We have been complaining for too long, is the coach deaf ?

    2. Tactics still not working effectively, where is our bench power? Shaban kenga is gone, teddy akumu is gone and more players are to follow suit……Just seeing kopany, onyango and kariuki on the bench tells me that we have to buy players in the transfer window in all key areas particularly attacking midfield and strike force I.e wing players.

    3. BW is yet to convince, he is yet to beat tusker and Efusi in any competitive match. He has been around for close to one year, I still stand to be corrected, when was the last time a team won a league title without beating tusker and Efusi? …..please correct me BW has been to two or three cup finals since his arrival at gor Mahia and he has lost all of them ! There is something the coach is not cracking in terms of understanding the strength of our opponents! This must be fixed and the earlier it is done , the better because ten man tusker beat mathare united 3-0, yes ten man tusker!!!!!

Let’s bounce back against KRA with a plomp!

  • Jakoyo you are wrong on Blackberry. For the first time Berry played well. What is killing us is the midfield of Kizito and Eric. These two guys are too slow to react and commit too many fouls. For Wanyonyi i was shocked he scored something i never expected. This boy is generally good but soo raw and immature. He could have made it two goals but as usual he is always in a hurry like Jacob Kelly.
We need serious depth in the team but looking at the bench am worried, Oboya has issues while Mutiso is injured, Kenga and Akumu are gone.
If we think we shall depend on Kopany and the likes we might as well start saying bye to the league but i still i still jope the office will do the right thing and sign experienced players.

From the match I saw that we still have a good team but what we lacked is depth. Despite our issues there are still alot we can do as a team instead of the usual blame game when we lose. Are our players and TB only bad when we lose?
Kudos to the fans for keeping the peace inspite of the ‘painfull’ results and congrats to Ingwe for the win. As Kogalo instead of lamenting and whinning we need to learn from the match. When the coach plays Shakava and we have a defensive lineup the know-it-all complain and when he plays an offensive lineup like today we still complain. What do we want? When we win they say they want to win beautifully and when we lose we still complain.

  • I love BW, he has the love of this club at heart. Just listen to him correct James Wokabi every time he used the wrong words (to describe the state of the team)during the post match interview. “We have never lost 2 matches on the bounce since I joined Gor Mahia”.

    SUMMARY.
To me, a very balanced match though efusi just shades it in terms of possession and creativity in the middle of the park. Gor made more chances but only took one. Efusi utilized their chances. LESSON:: Always take your chances or you may just get punished by the opponent. This is wht my keen eyes observed.

    SCREENING
    1. When your team allows Shikokoti despite him being played out of position to look world class thn you know you have bigger problems on the day. This is exactly wht happened today- Gor Mahia made him look “world class”. He won most of the tackles and was first to every 2nd ball. Him together and Mudde screened their defense so well thus making our much revered attack look so ordinary and their defense so superior today. (SCREENING) is a must in modern world football.

    PLAY MAKERS
    2. Our midfielders couldn’t match the very fluid and creative nature of efusi’s forward play. We struggled to contain the intelligent and deceiving movements of Okwemba n Mangoli. We were out foxed by De Jong playing two Defensively minded midfielders in the name of Shikokoti and Mudde. While our midfield 3 of Baba, Eric and Wanyonyi kept on moving up and down the field, Shikokoti and Mudde operated just In front of the defense. They didn’t venture forward as exemplified by the former (Shikikoti) being the ever present first line of defense that we had to outwit to have a clear run at their defense.
(PLAY MAKERS IS A MUST) Eric and Baba are not play makers. While efusi had the creative genius of Okwemba and Mangoli, to rely on in the middle, we had the equally talented trio of BlackBerry, Rama and Wanyonyi. While Rama was denied space by the two banks defensive wall erected by efusi the other two were stuck on the wings. Hence our central midfield play lacked creativity. WE NEED A (CAM) central attacking midfielder.

    WING PLAY/SYSTEM
    3. Because we rarely stretched the play to the wings, we never managed to pull their defensive formation out of position. This contributed to their defensive play remaining compact and comfortable. Efusi employed relentless attacks from the wings using the pace of Keli and Ikenna and this created panic in our defense. This wing play also led to our defense having several one on one situations against their attackers once our defenders had been pulled out of position. Our failure to have had a designated player(s) screening our defense may have also caused us the first goal. Baba and Eric were all over the place instead of sticking to a given role. We needed someone to tail Okwemba in the 2nd half. Nobody did and thts why we most the midfield battle. Look at all the telling passes tht he played!!! For us, the only time we stretched our play to the wings we managed to score a very beautiful goal through Wanyonyi.

    USE THE SQUAD STRENGTH.
    4. Lastly, I want to urge BW to vary our attacking formation by regularly giving play time to Kopany and Obwoge. Everyone who watched the match can attest to the fact that, though Ikenna did not score for efusi he did a lot of the damage by hurrying up and keeping our defenders ever so busy. Efusi’s first goal was scored as a result of a dummy run made by Ikenna thus allowing Keli to break through and score. In contrast , Danny and Rama likes to operate off the defenders as they thrive on space. Once they are denied this as it happened today, they become ineffective. This is where tall and physical players like Obwoge can be played to vary the attack. All in all, it was a joy to watch Mzee Okwemba pull the strings and run rings around our players in the middle of the park. This is the area where we lost the plot as we failed to control the midfield. We did not get stuck in early enough to dictate the rhythm of play. We allowed Okwemba and his partner in crime, Mangoli to control this area of the field hence tormenting us on end.

We have learnt our lessons the hard way. Its time to regroup, reflect and correct the mistakes of today so that they don’t cost us any more Points in the remaining fixtures. Good luck team Gor Mahia in the remaining matches.

  • I ask what were some GM fans applauding at the end of the game?
1)The fact that we were hammered 3-1
    2) The unresolved KRA debacle
    3) The financial quagmire created by inept EC with the possibility that players /TB payments are’nt upto date.
Someone enlighten me coz being peaceful does’nt mean we start applauding mediocracy CHOKE!
When in our situation you hang your head in shame & quietly go home. as we have no moral authority to question unpaid players/TB.

@ODUOR12, i was one of those who applauded the team. By the way this is a sign to show the players that we are together with them in defeat and in wins. I see it happening in civilized societies like when i watch EPL, La LIga, Bundesliga, Italian League etc. We have to realize that football is a game and the players are basically artists. I hate it when some of our fans abuse the players when they make mistakes but i forgive them bacause maybe they have never been involved in a team sport.I hope you are not one of those who walked away after Ingwe scored their third goal.
Some of us will walk with the team even in ‘shame’ as you call it.All the same as i said before supporting Gor or any other team requires a thick skin and it’s worse if you take soccer as a matter of life and death. I saw the gor and Ingwe players exchanging pleasantries after the game and I wonder who should be hurting most

  • Well said Dan Original – ¤ 19. If someone asks you why we applauded the team after the final whistle despite the loss, pls tell them this~ a loss is one of the 3 results tht every decent football player and fan must learn to accept whenever they participate in this sport either as a player or fan . The other 2 results being a draw or a win. Shame on anyone who wants or tries to stop us from appreciating the efforts of our players. To all the players, EC and the fans of Gor Mahia, we celebrate your every commitment and endevour towards this great team – team Gor Mahia. You’re our heroes today and will always be. Whether you lose, draw or win, we will always stand with and by you. This is because we are fans and not fanatics, we are civilized people and not hooligans. We can draw a clear distinction between sports and war. We ARE READY to embrace any of the affore mentioned results whenever our team plays. We therefore don’t have to hang our heads in shame whenever our team, after a valiant and gallant effort loses a match. Shame on you for even imagining and entertaining such thoughts. We will revamp and rejig our team by bringing in some reinforcements in the June transfer window. BW¤ Kindly
sign some quality offensive players to help out Rama and Danny. Akumu must be replaced and also don’t forget tht we still need Central Attacking Midfielders. Good luck Gor Mahia. Losing to Efusi is just like a storm in s tea cup. We shall surely rise again to confound our critics.

  • How does a loss in one game make BW’s tactics wanting. The guy has given us 6 straight wins. Why didn’t you criticise him then. Like I said, this is a marathon and not a sprint. I did not watch the game but I hope BW did not go with 3 at the back. AFC have very speedy wingers and the only way to contain them is 4-5-1 system. However you can’t blame BW for playing with two forwards since we were the home team. We needed to attack. One loss should not make you sad. Man Utd always wins EPL despite loosing to the top dogs.

  • @Oduori – You are such a thankless chap. What does KRA issue have to do with this article. I now know that you are a hooligan. Stop being short sighted. Gor has gone 6 matches unbeaten and you weren’t talking then. Where are u from? One loss does not make this team the worst in the wrld like you are trying to make us believe. Like I said, I was unfortunate note to watch this game due to engagements out but I still believe some critics are overly too critical. One loss in 7 matches does not make this team the worst on earth. I am the most critical guy when it comes to the EC but I cant criticise them here now. AFC Leopards is a big team and I am sure they wanted this more than us. We have one game to close the first half of the season and if we win this then we will still be in the driving seat.

What about a tall natural striker, the short ones we have have been studied and mastered by the opposing defenders and their impact is waning, a quick footed attacking midfielder? While I like the industry and passing of Kizito, Eric holds ball for too long. When I saw the reserve bench yesterday I knew we were in trouble and when BW brought in Kopany,it showed all, we are shallow for cover, too shallow; and when I see Owino struggle,I know there is trouble. And when Jerry is in goal,I know there will be goals, against us.

    To Russians
There was a gentleman’s agreement to behave well during the match and after, why were you throwing things, shame on you.
    To baba Kizito
You have shown on several occasions that you are for peace, you always rush to quell trouble and you are gaining lots of respect for that, preach more peace, that’s why you are “baba”,the only one after “BABA”.

Am ok with the loss….every team has to lose points at some stage in the league.
However, what am not happy with is the manner in which we lost.AFC has just come back from a tournament where they played about 6 games in about 2 weeks.
They therefore asked for a postponement of our game citing fatigue but the league managers declined.and they still managed to marshal their troops and beat us comprehensively….never mind the fact that we had the upper hand in the first 20 or so minutes.
Their mid which had Shikokoti as the anchorman never broke a sweat to deal with us…and this is a player who has not seen alot of play time in Leopards colors.
It is not rocket science that our mid needs some tweaking.Kizito is good, but ochiengs performance is wanting….and so is wanyonyis. With the exit of akumu and kenga,we need a ball playing midfielder and in my personal opinion that player is mieno.
If not, then its about time we use Onyango and Kariuki to see what they can do.Our formation is predictable and am afraid it may not suit us for the 2nd leg.its time we made a few changes to freshen up the team!!

  • I must say that we lost fair and square and that is the name of the game. Win some and loose some. Congratulations to our team. My opinion is that they gave their best. At the same time, I think that they are going through lean time and especially with loosing of their colleagues. This disrupts the pattern of play. BW said said however that “in this short window it will not be easy to get a good player. Then he said again We will not just get a player for the sake of it” I think that this is the Truth. This brings a heavy commitment to the rest of the players.Anyone who gets a chance will try to prove a point. We must not be judged with the games loose. Even efusi will still loose as the race is on. Guys we may weep for a night but joy comes in the morning.

I think our players had a good game until they started trailing. Many times when i watch our matches i wonder what BW is coaching. BW’s work is to help players build confidence in such a manner that even if they are down they don’t hurry and make mistakes. AFC made wonderful use of the wings. I think Owino and Emuge need thorougher training on how to pass balls to team mates instead of long balls which Sserunkuma and Rama do not get. Our players hold the ball too much making it possible for defenders to recover especially on counter attack. Those who blame blackberry are wrong. Our midfielders never pass balls like what Kerry scored yesterday. Blackberry did not receive good passes because our players hold balls too long.
With those kind of passes as opposed to looping balls, we would have worried AFC’s defence. BW, kindly re evaluate your coaching. It doesn’t work. Players must know how to control balls and pass moving forward until goal.
