Gor Mahia misses CAF deadline

Gor Mahia could miss next season’s continental assignments even if they qualify after having missed CAF deadlines for licensing.

Additional reporting from the Standard

Gor Mahia risk missing out on continental football next season, should they win this year’s Kenyan Premier League.

K’Ogalo failed to meet the October 31, 2016 deadline set by CAF for club licensing.

Only two clubs, Tusker and Ulinzi Stars, have met the deadline, with Ulinzi being granted a provisional license.

Football Kenya Federation Communications Manager Barry Otieno said Gor Mahia have not adhered to the requirements for club licensing.

“There is a risk that should Gor Mahia win the Kenyan Premier League, they may not take part in the Champions League because they have not complied with the requirements for club licensing.

“There is a lot they have not done towards compliance. However, it is up to the compliance committee to decide whether the club is doing enough,” he said.

Otieno said other clubs have until December 31 to comply for them to take part in the KPL next season.

Contacted, Gor Mahia acting Secretary General Ronald Ngala said they are taking steps to comply.

“Compliance is a process and we are working towards it. We are facing some challenges especially in having a new constitution and we hope to work on it and submit soon,” he said.

Before complying with the requirements for club licensing, Gor Mahia must also comply with the Sports Act. Past efforts to pass a new constitution have failed after members failed to agree on the modalities. It is not clear when the process will resume.

In a related development, Ulinzi Stars have been granted a three-month provisional club licensing certificate.

The license was issued last week and allows Ulinzi to meet the deadline for both next year’s CAF Championships and KPL.

“Following Ulinzi Stars FC’s commitment in complying with the club licensing system and a recommendation from the FKF Club licensing Committee, the club has been issued with a Provisional license number L-FKF 2017- 0002 valid until January 31, 2017,” said FKF CEO Robert Muthomi.

“The certificate confirms partial fulfilment of all mandatory minimum requirements with condition that Ulinzi Stars FC strive to get an Interim Certificate of Registration from the Sports Registrar,” added the CEO.

Meanwhile, more than 10 aspirants for the December 11 Gor Mahia elections have taken issue with the independence of the election process.

Former Secretary General Chris Omondi, who is contesting for the chairman’s post, questioned the move to increase registration fees from Sh100 to Sh500.

“The charges are illegal since they were not passed at a general meeting,” he said.

First,I think the move not to comply is deliberate as there are 2 conditions our bloated opaque EC are avoiding.Producing & tabling financial statements & Independent Secretariat. Methinks all along EC did not want GM to wrap up this year’s league early as CAF licensing would have become an election issue, that’s why twas raised halfheartedly late in the day. With the deadline over EC is desperate to win the league as a campaign booster and with the CAF conditions out of the way an extra/bonus year of looting. Ati licensing is a process and its been known for the last decade.

  • I have always had this feeling that some high ranking people within have no interest in Gor winning the league; maybe to avoid those travvelling expenses.Just see how club licensing is being dragged.

  • Kusema ukweli Rachier runs Gor as a side hustle. Gor Mahia in itself is big business; I wonder who will lead this club professionally

Good to see the EC has heeded to the advice to end the misery of every day hoping . you don’t just plan everything around ‘hope’

Now that even kagame cup status is unknown , let’s start planning early to win the 2017 league and target 2018 expanded caf group stages.

Guys, I think we have a bloated EC but then how comes we blame the Chair for everything. Can’t these many officials pass a vote of no-confidence on the same Chair? Personally I don’t see any problem with missing the CAF CL because we don’t seem organized for it. The next office that will come in December has a lot of work to do. Basically to professionalize the team.

  • @ Dan the next office might be the existing office. Can the likes of Martin Oduor Otieno formerly of KCB bank accept this challenge to run Gor.

By the way team like Sundown are run by well-known professional who love the team. The problem with Gor is that we elect some people who want to gain fro the team instead of the other way round

@ Dan Original,to ask why the many EC officials can’t pass a vote of No confidence in the chair is Akin to asking why can’t the Kenyan Cabinet pass a vote of No confidence in the president over the overwhelming corruption scandals dogging the nation…(Same Scenario)

@Ja’Asego, unfortunately only the two parliaments can pass a vote of no confidence on the Prezo and not the Cabinet. As a CS if you are dissatisfied you just quit.
My problem is that it’s this EC who were themselves elected just like AR who are acting like flower girls. The Execs really determine how the CEO or Chair will govern. Anyway even the current aspirants should let us finish the league in peace then we begin the campaigns. As it is AR can easily floor them but lose his whole EC which will be a good thing for us

Exactly Dan,that’s the point, the many EC officials owe their allegiance to Chair and therefore cannot dare question or go against the grain,a good example is Chris Omondi currently vying for Chairman,he was elected SG but quit due to differences in opinion and pressure by loyalists. It is not an easy thing working in Gor Office bro,but then again can any of these aspirants oust AR??//??/….Tall Order Indeed
