Gor Mahia tied by KRA

courtesy of futaa.com

KRA FC and Gor Mahia played to a barren draw in an entertaining Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match played at the MISC Kasarani on Saturday 14th June.

Goalkeepers from both teams had a good game but it is Gor Mahia’s Jerim Onyango who undoubtedly stood out.

Geoffrey Kataka could have opened the scoring for KRA just after kick off, making a good solo run into the Gor box but Jerim Onyango punched away his hard shot for a fruitless corner.

Rama Salim and Dan Sserenkuma exchanged neat passes in the 14th minute and the Ugandan International released a through pass to the on running Rama but KRA custodian Philip Odhiambo came quick off his line to clear off the danger.

Odhiambo again did well to deny Rama in the 26th minute, punching away his powerful header from a Joseph Wanyonyi corner kick. KRA striker Roosevelt Blatty found himself in a good scoring position minutes later after he was put through by Kataka but his hard shot was parried away by the impressive Jerim Onyango.

Gor Mahia’s youngster Joseph Wanyonyi made a good run down the left flank, left Davies Ikocheli for dead but shot disappointingly wide from inside the box in the 35th minute.

KRA custodian Philip Odhiambo dived to save Sserenkuma’s low shot after the Ugandan had intercepted Douglas Okumu’s back pass in the 45th minute.

Second Half

Gor Mahia introduced youngster Herbert Kopany just after the breather. Sserenkuma could have opened the scoring three minutes later but Philiph Odhiambo denied him.

KRA brought it former Gor Mahia midfielder Ivan Anguyo for Evans Albera in the 64th minute and rested Joseph Muleme for former City Stars forward George Mwangi minutes later.

Jerim Onyango punched away Mwangi’s powerful header from inside the box in the 68th minute as KRA continued piling in the pressure in search of the opening goal.

Gor tactician Bobby Williamson introduced Kevin Omondi for Kopany in the 68th minute and Dan Onyango for the jaded Eric Ochieng in the 78th minute.

Both teams continued their search for the crucial goal but it was not to be largely due to the outstanding goalkeeping of Jerim Onyango and Philip Odhiambo.

Gor Mahia is still at the helm of the 16-team KPL log with 30 points while KRA is fifth with 24 points, both having played 15 matches.

This was a game of two halves. We really played badly in the first half but in the second half we were quite lively. Bringing Kopany for BB proved not to be a wise move and it’s good the coach realised and ubbed him for Kevo.
As much as Jerry saved us we most almost ten clear chances but were let down by poor finishing. We really need to beef up our mid. As much as Kizito is very good he really needs cover, which Teddy used to provide. We need someone to serve Danny and Rama with the passes and this should be done ASAP

lets be honest here….the team is in decline;judging from the past 5 matches!

no tactical nous from the technical bench,no game changer or impact player from the bench, poor choice of substitution;no meaningful attack, lack of flair in midfield and general lack of coordination from the whole team.

while i feel other teams are improving, ours is in decline, hence the reason why we are out of the top 8 and have been dropping points in the league lately!!

When you lose so many chances to score that’s not a poor game, KRA isn’t a pushover team; I think congratulations is in order. So how many Jerry’s do we have, the one who turned up yesterday isn’t the one who played in the leopard game? What was that about Kopany, is it that TB do not know the capacity of their players?

  • And what is “blackberry” still doing at the club……? Tech bench I need answers

  • this team is on the downward trend. i do not think this is about pay but simply player attitude. but this is not gor alone. it’s kenya soccer in general. watching the world cup and watching gor i realise that i am now shortchanging myself. i have stuck with the kpl while ignoring epl matches but i thnk i will now join the crowd. watching the gor-kra match was really a disppointment. these kenyan players are doing a disservice to this country. but i will not put all blame on the players… a major destroyer of kenyan soccer has been hooliganism and i am afraid to say the gor hooligans have almost single-handedly destroyed soccer in this country. the bravado that the gor fan could fund the club is quickly turning into an embarrassment. this cheap display by the players will drive away fans and gor will be back to the poverty of the recent years.

  • Because we cannot get Osumba, let the Technical Bench pull all the resources to sign Geoffrey Kataka Omusula from KRA. This boy can be as good as Osumba if not better. He is the missing piece of the jigsaw tht GM must sign. Don’t forget tht he was recently called to the National Team Harassed Stars. Once again Obwoge failed to make even the bench. Why we persist with playing long and high balls to short players ( Danny and Rama) is beyond me. We have to remodel our system to suit our strikers or forever we will be writing these protest pieces after every match. We once again failed to utilize the chance tht we created.

  • @ dinga, that’s the obsevrvation that sums up everything about gor Mahia……..if it were not for the fans, gor Mahia would be nowhere! Tusker and Efusi are busy fighting for trophies and recruiting the best players in kenya but for gor Mahia ? Well, we just grind out results and hope ” our fans” will be there for us and ” understand ” our situation !

  • Good people, I watched this match with lots of expectations of mind that we will close the mid season at least with two points on hand. That was not to be because tusker will close the gap and come the final leg, we will be fighting for pride not leaders.
I have pinpointed on many occasions where industrial Psychology befits. We said it before that fielding Wanyonyi in a game whom loyalty he himself confessed and I quote…” I wish one day I can play for AFC…” goes without saying that the boys loyalty is with the rivals. Scoring the lone goal made no difference infact he dwindled immediately after. Secondly, the kind of substitutions made tend to raise eyebrows… ineptitude is the word. Un- called for an untimely. I am a sports analyst and some things are so basic. What Bobby Williamson need now is a strong assistant. (Talk to Pamzo or engage Ghost Mulei for advice)
Look at our bench, we no longer can stand the tides any more. Let me use tides for the sake of those of us who think that the club is doing bad financially. If this was so then:-
    1. The EC could have spoken
    2. We could have been told on the 350100 position
    3. The CEO could have advised us on the business avenues we should be preparing for now that there is no possible sponsor
    4. Amina and the rest could be holding their horses before carelessly going to the media for self glory ( remember Ramas saga?)
    5. Chris,Chris,Chris…. Bwana SG. You might have inherited an already filthy office but surely its time you stood up and started to work. Out of 10 you get my 1.5.
    6. Chris you have not told us on how you wish to seal the gaps we are experiencing. You can hardly raise a strong first eleven. Are you buying? We are remaining with less than 15 days to close the window.
    7. Lastly……this is an eye opener to you people who elect persons based on nothing, may be fellowship ( see Amina)…come next election.. Wipe them all out.
Am still contributing. I know some of you stopped but I don’t blame you.

  • Long/high balls is/was the typical or traditional preferred British style of football. Politely it is termed direct approach but known here as “orodha”.
In England only a few teams like Tottenham (linked to the Great Len Julians) have not been associated with this approach.
In Kenya its AFC who’ve been usually associated with orodha while GM have been the stylist.
Recently this has been turned around with our own Jagoal been the greatest proponent of orodha & remember BW is very British.

  • The team played well period much better than the previous games. For those stuck with bad mouthing the club shame on you. When the team plays well it should be praised. Even with the long balls Danny and Rama had clear chances but did not take advantage. Going forward what our players need is learn the art of concentration throughout the game. In addition we need a midfielder with great skill like Rama and strength like Kizito and the puzzle will be complete. My prayer is that Gattuso will give us this option hoping and praying he still has not dipped in form. We shall win the league people take it to the bank.

So far so good, let the team now prepare well for the second and last stretch of the league, retaining the title is very much possible

  • Those in doubt see todays results. Sofapaka drew with Ulinzi. Chemelil won so we just await Tuskers game to know if they will bridge the gap. We just need to tweek our midfield and have the players learn to concentrate for 90 minutes. Afc just lost and to me i can say one thing about their team its all hyped up but no quality.

Some of the comments here do not help the team. How can we as fans say that we cannot support the team financially and at the same time we indicate which players we need to sign. How do you do that? For those for EPL nothing stops you from supporting them. I only wonder how that helps our local soccer.
Did some of those commenting here really attend the match? I doubt and i believe this is the clique that waits for results amd then makes their comments. The truth is that we played poorly in the first half but did very well in the second half. On the sub the coach said that the lad has been exceptional in training and we all know that is one of the yardsticks for a startup. I believe what we are going through is what every team goes through during the league. The issue is how fast we will come back and get the groove back

Bloggers we have a problem in only one area ,midfield kizito is playing alone in the defensive role ,if we can get one good midfielder the team will be home and dry,i liked the way dan onyango stabilzed that mid when he came in,if Gatuso can regain his previous form the team will be ok.otherwise let us also put into consideration the financial status of the team, let us not buldoze things, we still have very good players in TPL,WE may end up in mieno sofapaka way if we sign players and we dont pay the ones we have.

the team is not in a very bad shape.however,we urgently need to beef up the midfield as we lack a creative midfielder who can prise open stubborn defences.

tusker fc are looking very good judging from the top 8 finals and to beat them to the tpl tape we must re-strategise and reorganise our player unit as a matter of urgency!!

finally, lets not wish away afc…they are also coming out strongly and are a much better outfit now under their new coach!!

There may be low morale in camp. Someone should interview the players and get to the bottom of it. Some of them have been giving listless uninspired performances.

After watching few wc matches,i noticed that itis now play ball forward as possible look for available partner(any partner apart from Kepper)and aim at the keeper and wait for rebound. You bring mid field play, you will be defeated since long balls at your goal mouths keeps you under pressure and your mid become ineffective. This the same game BW plays. That is why spain lost.

@Macholuong, that is how we scored against Ingwe and also how we conceeded. You tiki taka at your own risk. The gap between to top tema and the lower ones in the world has reduced. Now Brazil, Argentina, Spain etc will not just beat any team any how. And likewise in the TPL before you beat KCB and Top Fry you have to sweat for it.
At Gor all we need is someone to feed the two lethal strikers Rama and Danny and we will be OK. Even Daddy instead of trying to finish by himself would be making those dummy runs and then unleashing Daany and Rama. You better assist and we win the game instead of trying t score and we end up not winning the game. Even Wanyonyi can do likewise. Otherwise we played very well in the second half though blunt at goal. Whoever watched the game will also testify that Kizito, Walusimbi, Rama and Danny have a work rate which if emulated by the rest of the team mates we stand a big chance of defending our trophy. How i wish Oboya and Mutiso to come back!!

My take is to the Executive Team , the open window for signing players is coming soon and we may loose players if we do NOT seal the gaps faster .

    – Get players that will support RAMA / DAN at the striking area .
    – Strengthen the Mid field with players who can feed , Daddy is better , but he doesn’t support DAN and RAMA as Much .
    – Increase players salaries for this final season and the Motivation goes higher .
NB : I fully support comments made by DAN ORIGINAL .

  • Breaking news! ..”………..Ugandan striker Robert Ssentongo is on the verge of joining Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia FC.

The striker who spent half of last season at URA FC after leaving Ethiopian side St. George arrived in Nairobi on Monday June 16 to meet the Gor officials and Goal.com reports that the deal is expected to be complete by end of Tuesday June 17.

Gor Mahia Chief Executive Officer Omondi Aduda confirmed the arrival of the Ugandan. “I personally received Ssentongo at JKIA on Monday evening,” Omondi is quoted by Goal.com

“We are holding more talks with his representatives today (Tuesday) but what I can reveal is that the deal is as good as sealed. We need to agree on a few things before Ssentongo puts pen to paper.”

Ssentongo also hinted that he has always admired the KPL and expressed his delight if the deal manages to go through.

“I have always wanted to play in Kenyan Premier League and will be happy if the deal goes through. It will also be amazing to play alongside my countrymen, who have always urged me to come and play in Kenyan league,” he said.

In case he completes the move, Ssentongo’s will bring the number of Ugandans at K’Ogalo to five. Others are striker Dan Sserunkuma, Godfrey ‘Baba’ Kizito’, Geoffrey Walusimbi and Israel Emuge.

As usual, we shall keep you posted.
