Gor Mahia are set to lose another player to Simba SC of Dar es Salaam

Additional reporting from the Nation

Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango is close to securing a lucrative move to Tanzanian champions Simba SC, Nation Sport can reveal.

The Gor Mahia defender has agreed on personal terms with the Wekundu Wa Msimbazi and is set to put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal in the coming days.

“He was owed a lot of money by Gor Mahia and put in a demand letter to them that went unanswered. He then served notice as is required and commenced negotiations with Simba who have always been interested in his services,” a source told Nation Sport.

“Simba has moved with speed to secure his services and he is expected in Dar es Salaam next week. He is happy and looking forward to starting afresh in Tanzania.”

At Simba, Joash will join his former Gor Mahia teammates Francis Kahata and Meddie Kagere who played an integral part for the Tanzanian champions in the just concluded season .

Simba won the league title, Domestic Cup and the Azam Federation Cup and are eager to do well in the Caf Champions League next season, hence the need to add experienced players to boost their squad.

Onyango joined Gor Mahia in 2017 from Western Stima and won the coveted Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award at the end of the 2018/19 season.

Gor Mahia are struggling to keep the star players due to financial challenges.

The team recently lost goalkeeper David Mapigano to Tanzanian moneybags Azam FC while the duo of speedy forward Boniface Omondi and custodian Peter Odhiambo has joined Wazito.

Gor Mahia captain Kenneth Muguna is close to sealing a move to Girabola where he will turn out for Petro Atletico.

The midfielder has been subject to discussion in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and initially, he had been linked with a move to Tanzania Mainland League champions Simba SC.

However, this might not be the case as the latest reports indicate the Kenya international is heading Central Africa.

“Talks are in an advanced stage, and it is as good as done, Muguna is going to Petro Atletico,” a source close to the player told Goal on Friday.

“Both parties have reached an agreement and official communication will be made soon. Muguna is keen on playing abroad, and the Angolan side has provided him the platform to exploit his talent.”

When reached for comment, club chairman Ambrose Rachier admitted there was contact but not from the abovementioned side.

“Yes, there is a team that came and inquired about the availability of Muguna some time back,” the experienced administrator told Goal.

“However, we have not heard from them again, I do not know whether they are still interested or not. But once they come back and present an offer, we will be public on it.

“Maybe they have approached Muguna, but as a club, no we have not had recent inquiries regarding the player.”

British coach Steven Polack claimed in an initial interview with Goal that he is not aware of whether captain Muguna has asked to leave the club or not.

“You are asking about Muguna, what about him?” Polack posed a question.

“I have not been told that the player wants to leave, I have not heard anything, I don’t think he wants to leave, he has not talked to me…and no club official has told me that [Muguna] wants to leave.

“I only heard about this several months ago and it cooled down, maybe they have again started the same rumours, anyway I don’t know anything about Muguna, we are just relaxing at home now that we cannot play football and waiting for the way forward on when football will return.”

K’Ogalo will be taking part in the Caf Champions League after being declared champions for the 2019-20 campaign after the league was ended owing to the coronavirus pandemic, and will also chase the league and domestic Cup titles.

“We are talking to players, we are talking to a few players and let us see what will happen, but I am not going to give out their names because our rivals will jump for their services,” Polack continued.

“We are talking to players in the Kenyan league, we are talking to a lot of Kenyan players and I will not give you the names or positions, just know we are in talks with several players and the talks are very positive for now.”

Wish well. Let’s go down to th mashinani and get better players. We shall never be short of players. Players? Never! Officials and administration? Yes we shall still lack to get quality ones. I wish we had a choice to put officials on sale as well.

  • As I said in the previous story. The results of the election are of little consequence. The issue that must be addressed is to bring about structures that will ensure good financial management, accountability of transparency.

The reason key players are always leaving is because they are told stories about how in Zambia, Angola and Tanzania, salaries and allowances are always paid on time no matter what.

If we don’t bring that level of organization and financial management to Kogallo, then we will always be reading stories of players leaving for Wazito and elsewhere.

  • Are we going to compete in the next CAF Champions League or we have just been registered as participants who will mark their attendance and leave (be eliminated) early.
We’ve lost GK Mapigano and Boniface Omondi.
We’ve on the verge of losing or have lost Joash and Muguna.

    The squad is haemorrhaging fast.

Those lamenting about Rachier’s chairmanship are trying to close the stable door after the horse has bolted. My advice is save your energy.
As regards the Vice Chairperson and Treasurer’s positions a vote for Sally and Dolfina means that for all practical purposes Gor Mahia remains a one man / ADOR affair with all the weaknesses highlighted by Nyangi set to continue for a further four years.
ADOR is most likely more experienced in accounting than Dolfina so what value can her mismatched degree and HR experience bring the GMFC’s financial management.
So sad Christine Okoth is laid back as team Rachier, Wasuna, Sam Ochola and Chrispine may deliver as opposed to Rachier, Sally, Sam Ochola and Dolfina which is essentially reduced to Rachier and Sam Ochola and I see Rachier ruling the roost as a paper treasurer can’t question his decisions with Sally’s sycophancy set to continue.

We shall never be short of players. We shall unearth better ones. We are only short of administrators and officials. We can’t get the likes of Omino, Zack Mbori etc

  • Let Onyango Go and kill his dream of ever stepping his foot to Europe an leagues. We have a very Focust and responsible coach, I wonder if this players ever create time to analyse the quality of coaches in the Team. If its money i believe what they can make in Tanzania in one full year they can make 1000 times in one week Incase they get to Europe. Gor Mahia is the only Getway to Europe.
