Report: Gor Mahia on the verge of signing Oliech

Oliech in action against Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo

Gor Mahia are still looking to strengthen their side further. To that end they appear keen on securing the services of Dennis Oliech who is making a comeback after a two year layoff.

Goal reported that the Kenyan champions were leading the race to sign the speedy striker before the transfer window shuts Gor Mahia has admitted that they are in talks to sign striker Dennis Oliech .

Additonal reporting from goal.com Goal reported on Monday that the Kenyan champions were leading the race to sign the former Harambee Stars striker before the transfer window shuts down in January. And a top K’Ogalo official, who did not want to be named, has now confirmed that indeed, they are negotiating to sign the player.

“Where there is smoke, there is always fire. I don’t want to talk much in regards to Oliech but I know there is something going on but not for publishing yet. He has shown keen interest to play for us and we are keen to listen to him.”

On Monday, a close source to the player told Goal.com that the striker could be a Gor Mahia player by the end of this week. “It is true. I spoke to the player today (Monday) and he was heading to Gor Mahia offices to discuss on the contract and could possibly be unveiled before the end of the week.

“Gor Mahia is very keen to sign the player because they are involved in a number of competitions this season and want a strong squad.”

Hello Kogalo family it looks like the rumors about Oliech signing for Gor is not soliciting much reactions. May be you are like me. I really do not know how to react to it. This is because of a few things.
    1. Oliech is a player of high caliber and has played in major leagues. Everything there is so different from our local situation that I am not so sure if he joined team Kogalo how he will adapt.
    2. Our Clubs have had money challenges, how will he handle such matters. What influence will he have when matters are not good on these matters I have just mentioned. At least for him, he has made some money. comparatively the young players that he might find himself playing with are still aspiring to make money, will he provide leadership because definitely they look at him as a source of inspiration or a role model.
    The good side however is:
    1. That he will bring in experience.
    2. He has not just been lying idol but has remained active in matters football.
    3. He may not have the fire power and the speed, but his mere presence raises the stake of the team.
Finally, should he join I think there will be pressure on him to show good leadership to upcoming players. Otherwise we appreciate him and I will be looking forward to him donning the Gor Mahia uniform.

@Jaupanda, every player is now desperate to join the Kenyan squad for AFCON 2019 hence the pressure. The issue is not always monetary but a platform to showcase ones abilities to potential suitors.

Yes, i can confirm the trio….Dennis Oliech, Paul Were and David Cheche ( all unattached) will join possibly next week BUT………ONLY if we go through into CAF Champions league group stages. Thats the pre-condition unfortunately otherwise they may not add much value.

I think this is a good move for Oliech, capping your career by playing at the top level in your local league. Like @Jaupanda has said our local teams (and especially Gor) is at times wanting. Very little professionalism in the EC.
All the same I know his presence will inspire lots of the young players who want to further their careers.
By the ay how are or plans for Nigeria? Or we will pop up at the last minute asking for fare, and salaries

We already did a letter yesterday via the Football Kenya Federation requesting the ministry to furnish us with 30 return air tickets. We plan to depart on thursday or early friday. Sharks also requested for the same facilitation…

We will welcome Oliech expecting that he knows only too well our usual predicaments of salary and bonus delays. Hence he should be prepared for the same without expecting special treatment as we await SportPesa to start paying players directly. The larger than life attitude he has at Harambee stars that might lead to undue influence on young players to become headstrong coz Oliech amesema tulipwe is something we are hoping we won’t have to deal with. Otherwise we continue putting pressure on EC to value our esteemed players and pay them on time hard as it may be to them…

Oliech would be good but am a little worried about his big ego and its effects in the dressing room!

If we are signing him, we should know that we are taking a full package and nothing less, nothing more!

    Keeping my fingers crossed!

  • At a personal level I have a lot of respect for Oliech and on the matter of him joining Gor , I surely have no opinion on it but i take comfort in the fact that Oliech will not just move directly from his house into the pitch but will have to proove himself in the training ground infront of a coach who seems to know what he wants and what he is doing-if he impresses the coach in training , then why not .
Secondly , Oliech having gone professional through lesser clubs and worse situations than the delayed salaries the Gor players go
through, will be a living example to the players of the importance of knowing their career priorities and to disgard emotional counsel from those already living their lives .
Thirdly , there must be a reason why , despite all the well publicised shortcomings of Gor Mahia , it is still the major destination of choice .
Going to Afcon is a reason I hear being mentioned a lot as a reason for players wanting a piece of Gor Mahia , but it is a fact that you dont have to be in Gor to go to Afcon , Dennis Odhiambo and Shilhalo are in Sofapaka and bandari respectively but they will most likely be in the team .
Finally , it is those names mentioned who wish to come to Gor , it is not Gor who have gone looking for them and so I wonder from what context a wannabee can
be in a position to make demands ati” but you must qualify to the group stages” -How now ,
    Oliech you are welcome.

Jakoyo, if I may ask, who has laid down these conditions? Is it the three players or the Gor Mahia administration? Whatever the case, I believe that Oliech coming to Gor Mahia has been weighed and well-thought out in terns of its pros and cons. I will have my reservations regarding Paul Were because he is one player who can be a real handful.

I believe Gor Mahia officials are all in agreement regarding this Oliech move. Oliech is a Kenyan who is well-known to administrators of football in this country. Moreso, he lives in the same city with those K’Ogalo administrators who are in talks with him. As such they know well what they are getting into. On the flipside, Oliech too together with his handlers also know about Gor Mahia well – both the good and the not-so-rosy side! These are all adults who are making very informed decisions with the hope that at the end of the day each party shall have achieved their objective(s). It is in view of this that I am of the opinion that we let nature take its course and hope for the best.

If Oliech joins Gor Mahia, it will just add one more chapter in the colourful history of each party. Should things go south, no problem, because many other things have gone south during K-Ogalo’s 50 years of existence and somehow, the club has survived and soldiered on. In any case, however out of form Oliech could turn out to be, could he be worse than the two Brazilian imports we had in the recent past, did nothing apart from scoring in friendly matches and we still paid them at expatriate rates and housed them? Could he be worse than George MIdenyo? Could he worse than Herbert Kompany who is still very young, but had to be released because of below par performance?

One last thing, Ja’Asego is on record here to have watched Oliech in training and he is satisfied with what he saw. My advice to Oliech is to keep the Nairobi county job that Sonko gave him because it will serve as his back-up whenever K’Ogalo EC delay the players’ salaries and allowances. He should be able to handle both jobs very well.

I am not sure if those who sit in the Kenyan Embassy in Abuja know so much of Enugu some 800 km away. Besides, how much help did the Kenyan Embassy offer when the national football team was training in a primary school backyard?…..and that was our national team. The best people to assist here would be Kenyan who reside and work in Enugu.

As the Organizing Secretary in-waiting, Ja’Asego, you should have told the incumbents to write that letter requesting the government for air tickets immediately we came from Malawi. We knew very well that we would be travelling to Nigeria this week. Anyway, I think most of the time we like doing things last minute so as to create a crisis that would move politicians to bail us out last minute. Not a bad strategy at all.

Ja’Asego it is my opinion that you go ahead of the team to Enugu to see about hospitality and training facilities. Once there, use diplomacy and if you smell frustration, then option B is to make your eyes red for them.

    Membership Presentation
Gor Mahia is the most popular and successful sports teams in Kenya and East African region, playing one of the most popular spectator sports on earth. Through our 50-year heritage we have won several trophies, including a record 16 Kenay Premier League titles, enabling us to develop what we believe is one of the most leading sports brands and a global community of hundreds of thousands of followers.

Our large, passionate community should provide Gor Mahia with a regional platform to generate significant revenue from several sources, including sponsorship, merchandising, product licensing, broadcasting and matchday attendance.

We attract leading companies such as Macron and Sportpesa that want access and exposure to our community of followers and association with our brand.

Gor Mahia community of followers should engage with the club in a variety of ways as follows:-
    • Premier League games at our home stadium, should be sold or fully attended as our 17 home games should target attendance of at least a minimum of 170,000 people.
    • Our Twitter account should target to have more than 1 million followers and we should continue to be the most engaged sports club Twitter handle locally and regionally.
    • We should undertake exhibition games and promotional tours on a regional basis, that should enable our followers to see our team play.
    • Gor Mahia should develop customer relationship management (“CRM”) database, a proprietary data repository that includes contact and transactional details of followers and customers around the region, this will enables us to analyze and better understand prospects and customers to drive revenues. We should also explore implementing a CRM data warehouse and marketing automation platform which should allow the club to integrate data from multiple untapped sources, to drive a deeper understanding of our fans behavior and preferences, with the aim of further driving revenue. This platform will also allow us to identify obsolete records and better consolidate and accurately understand the relationships between our fans and reduce incidences of hooliganisms.
    • Gor Mahia should launch an interactive website, which should be published in both English and Kiswahili languages and if possible an application.
    • Gor Mahia should improve its Facebook with target of 500,000 connections.
    • Gor Mahia should also have YouTube with target subscribers of 500,000 in the next 5 years, aims at making it the fastest channel to reach thousands of community YouTube’s subscribers.

    BUSINESS MODEL
Gor Mahia should operate and manage business as a single reporting segment for transparency and accountability purpose– as a professional sports team. Gor Mahia should endeavor to review its revenue through three principal sectors – commercial, broadcasting and matchday attendance under the following:-.

    1. Commercial
Within the Commercial revenue sector, Gor Mahia should monetize its rich regional brand via three revenue streams:
    ? sponsorship;
? retail, merchandising, apparel & product licensing; and
    ? mobile and content.

    • Sponsorship: Gor Mahai should focus on monetizing the value of its strong brand and community of followers through marketing and sponsorship relationships with leading companies around the region and globe. To better leverage the strength of its brand, Gor Mahia must develop a regional, local and product segmentation sponsorship strategy. The sponsorship revenue should target Kshs.100 per year with progression growth of Kshs.30 million every year to Kshs.220 million in year 5 respectively.

    • Retail, Merchandising, Apparel & Product Licensing: Gor Mahia should put greater emphasis and energy to market and sell sports apparels in all categories, training and leisure wear and other clothing featuring the Gor Mahia brand on a countrywide and regional basis. In addition, Gor Mahia should also sell other licensed products, from coffee mugs to bed spreads, featuring the Gor Mahia brand and trademarks. These products should only be distributed through Gor Mahia branded retail centers and e-commerce platforms, as well as Gor Mahia partners’ wholesale and retail distribution channels.

All of Gor Mahia retail, merchandising, apparel & product licensing business should managed by Sportpesa and Macron. Gor Mahia corporate office must give a performance target sale of 300,000 units of branded products every year at an average price of Kshs.1000 per unit should be able to generate additional income of Kshs.300 million.

    2. Broadcasting
Gor Mahia should also consider benefiting from the distribution of live football content directly from the revenue the club receive and indirectly through increased regional exposure for the club’s commercial partners. Broadcasting revenue should be derived from the television rights relating to the Kenya Premier League, African competitions and other competitions. In addition, Gor Mahia should consider establishing television channel, GorTV, delivers Gor Mahia programming to all over the country as well as several countries and territories around the globe. Broadcasting revenue including, in some cases, should be prize money received by Gor Mahia in respect of various competitions, will vary from year to year as a result of variability in the amount of available prize money and the performance of our first team in such competitions. The Broadcasting revenue should be targeted to Kshs.50 million in the first year of introduction and gradually targeted to grow to Kshs.200 million in the five year Marshall Strategic Plan.

    3. Matchday Attendance
I believe that Gor Mahia home games should attract more community of followers if the matchdays are marketed are very well marketed through social media and FM Radio Stations. Our home matches if well market can target between 7,500-10,000 community of followers in attendance. If Gor Mahia can achieve an average attendance of 8,750 community followers with 1,500 in VIP and 7,250 in terraces, the club can raise gross of Kshs.2.2 million per home match (Kshs.26.4 million) home matches alone excluding CAF continental participations.

Matchday revenue will vary from year to year as a result of the number of home games played and the performance of our Gor Mahia team in various competitions.

More accountability, transparency and controls will be required to achieve the highlighted revenue targets. This will also be driven by encouraging seasonal tickets and points of sale of entry tickets but not current obsolete ticket sales systems which is prone to abuses.

    BUSINESS STRATEGY
Gor Mahia should aim to increase its revenue and profitability by expanding our high growth businesses that leverage Gor Mahia brand, community of followers and marketing infrastructure. The key elements of this strategy are:

    1. EXPAND OUR PORTFOLIO OF SPONSORS
Gor Mahia is well-positioned to continue to secure sponsorships with leading brands. Gor Mahia should implement a proactive approach to identifying, securing and supporting sponsors. During strategic period of 5 years, Gor Mahia should secure at least five sponsorship partnerships, 1 regional sponsorship partnership and 1 financial services partnership.

We should target a 20% compound annual growth rate in Gor Mahia sponsorship revenue with the 5 year strategic plan. Our historical poor performance should not derail an idea whose time has come. In addition to developing our sponsorship portfolio, Gor Mahia should focus on segmenting new opportunities by product category and territory. As part of this strategy, Gor Mahia should open outlets office in all major cities and county headquarters as well as regional offices in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi with executing several regional sponsorship contracts.

    2. DEVELOP RETAIL, MERCHANDISING, APPAREL & PRODUCT LICENSING BUSINESS
Currently, Gor Mahia has 5-year agreement with Sportpesa and kitting agreement with Macron which should be explored and exploited with respect to the club official and kitting sponsorships as well as bringing on board dual-branded licensing rights, which should begin earliest. The agreements with Macron should not include the rights with respect to mono-branded licensing rights or the right to create and operate Gor Mahia branded soccer academy, physical retail channels and e-commerce retail channels. These are business areas that can be managed by a well-functioning corporate offices with targets set for each and every strategic objectives. This will also provide the club with increased commercial opportunities and control.

In the future within the set strategic plan, Gor Mahia should plan to invest in expansion of product licensees to enhance the range of product offerings available to Gor Mahia followers. Additionally, Gor Mahia should also seek to refine how to segment the different elements of this business. We may also increase our focus on developing these rights more proactively, alone or with other partners such as Sportpesa and Macron.

    3. EXPLOIT NEW MEDIA & CONTENT OPPORTUNITIES
The rapid shift of media consumption towards internet, mobile and social media platforms presents Gor Mahia with multiple growth opportunities and new revenue streams. The club digital media platforms, such as mobile sites, applications and social media, are expected to become one of the primary methods by which the club engages and transacts with its followers around the world. Gor Mahia must explore to evolve its media team’s capability to address these opportunities. Together these actions can help to ensure that Gor Mahia has both a greater degree of control over the production, distribution and quality of our proprietary content and better insight into how to evolve its mobile & content strategy as we continue to develop and roll out carefully targeted new products and services.

In addition to developing club’s own digital properties, the club should intend to leverage third party media platforms and other social media as a means of further engaging with its followers and creating a source of traffic for its digital media assets. The mobile & content offerings development presents opportunities for future revenue growth. Gor Mahia has the opportunity to further leverage CRM database, which includes target of over several CRM records, more than 1 million target Facebook connections and more than 1 million target Instagram and Twitter account followers. Gor Mahia should plan to implement a carefully considered strategy to target these individuals as part of our overall digital media rollout plan.

    4. ENHANCE THE REACH AND DISTRIBUTION OF OUR BROADCASTING RIGHTS
Gor Mahia is well-positioned to benefit from the increased value and the growth in distribution associated with the Kenya Premier League, CAF and other competitions. The Kenya Premier League announced a new television rights contract with Spanish worth several million for the seasons commenced with the 2017/18 season for its selective live broadcast rights. Such deal should mark a significant increase in revenues and represents the largest domestic TV rights deal signed. Coming on the heels of this current deal, which also represented an increase of the rights for the season, we believe this affirms the increasing demand for live sports and football in particular. Unlike other television programming, the unpredictable outcomes of live sports ensures that individuals consume sports programming in real time and in full, resulting in higher audiences and increased interest from television broadcasters and advertisers.

Furthermore, GorTV if initiated, our regional broadcasting platform will deliver Gor Mahia programming to over 4 countries and territories around the region. Gor Mahia should plan to continue to exploring the distribution of GorTV supported by improving the quality of the content and production capabilities in partnerships with other established media houses.

      This is excellent!

All the rest of what you have written is good strategy-wise!

I also think to avoid or plug the gate collection problem, where sometimes there alot of gate collection queries, Gor can adopt discounted season tickets and preferably use more of e-ticking if possible!

The other worry I have with this proposal is the lack of a josephist! Most times it is better to give the vision to the vision bearer the see results as described and desired! So the question is, are you willing to personally run for one of these electoral offices with this socio-economic, strategic manifesto? No pun intended, but I have a niggling feeling that this development/growth strategy is too much of a brain boxer for most of those potato growers in the current EC, who love dipping their fingers in the cooky jar!

  • @Jamigori , I have read your article twice and you couldn’t have put it any better and followed to the latter , it has the capacity to permanently put away the sheninigans that has stunted our growth since time immemorial.
The question then follows if it can be actualised and yes it can be but only if we take back the power that we have but have ceded to the hooligans on hire and this power can only be exercised if all those who mean well selflessly decide to voluntarily engage, people who are above the cheap handouts that have landed as where we are .
Secondly we have the capacity to make this wall a go to wall where any and all who wish to serve in any capacity must place there resume and vision for interrogation, guys there are tens of thousands of well meaning and respectable kogalo fans who were they to all engage, is enough numbers to overwhelm the easily affordable few hundreds who are perpetually hired and ferried to vote .
We as fans are largely to blame for our mediocre office holders and it is our solemn duty to rectify this .
This opinion is not an invitation to the opportunist conmen but rather a call to all the patriots to rise up and positively engage .
This battle though must not disrupt our present engagements

What I like about this is that he has seen it good thing that he should not retire without donning Gor colours, what would historians write? That there once was a formidable player called Dennis Oliech who played everything and everywhere but didn’t play for GMahia, though his father was a staunch GM supporter and siblings all but one played for HM. Gor Mahia is based in Nairobi County. Perhaps the County Government of Nairobi should emulate what ViHiga and Kakamega counties have done by sponsoring the Kenya Premier League teams from those regions. What Nairobi could do is just to sponsor the air tickets for Gor Mahia to Nigeria.
