Gor Mahia emerged victorious in the latest edition of the Mashemeji derby when they trounced their arch rivals 3-1. Nicholas Kipkirui struck twice and Jacque Tuyisenge scored the 3rd. Vincent Oburu pulled one back in the 85th minute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicholas Kipkirui scored his first Mashemeji derby brace as Gor Mahia\n continued their march towards the 2018\/2019 Sportpesa Premier League \ntitle with a convincing 3-1 victory over eternal rivals AFC Leopards at \nKasarani Stadium on Sunday.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The match was marred by incidents of hooliganism when a section \nof AFC Leopards fans started uprooting seats after their team conceded \nthe third goal.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with the victory, Gor who now have 69 points, just need two \npoints from their remaining three matches to lift their third \nconsecutive title and unprecedented 18th league crown.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kipkirui opened the scoring in the 26th minute before he \ncapitalized on Leopards’ defensive blunder after being set up by Jacques\n Tuyisenge on the hour mark to double the lead.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five minutes later, the former Zoo Kericho winger returned the \nfavour after being involved in the Rwandese’ third goal before Vincent \nscored a late consolation goal for Ingwe, who last won the derby \nbragging rights in 2016.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I expected AFC Leopards to give us a tough game, but \nunfortunately they didn’t show up. There was no competition at all. We \nshould have won by a bigger margin. All the same, it’s not yet \ncelebration time, we still have three matches to go,” said Gor coach \nHassan Oktay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for his AFC counterpart Casa Mbungo, defensive errors cost them the match.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Just like the other past matches, individual defensive blunder \ncost us in the derby. But we are on a rebuilding process, expect a \ndifferent team next season,” said Mbungo.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leopards threatened first in the third minute when David Ochieng \nreleased Isuza but goalkeeper Frederick Odhiambo came off his line to \nstop the former Mathare United man before Jacques Tuyisenge’s effort \nwent wide on the opposite end.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gor responded three minutes later when Nicholas Kipkirui latched on a loose ball but his effort went inches wide.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Were then initiated a counter attacker but Joash Onyango did well to out-muscle Isuza in the box.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leopards came close to breaking the deadlock in the tenth minute \nwhen Vincent Oburu rounded off his marker in the box only for his shot \nto go wide.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Gor replied immediately but Tuyisenge failed to make contact \nto Muguna’s incisive cross after arriving late in the box before AFC \ngoalkeeper Ezekiel Owade punched away Francis Kahata’s free kick.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moments later, Were forced a fine save from Gor keeper before \nKipkirui pounced on Tuyisenge’s rebound following Kahata’s delivery to \ngive Gor the lead in the 26th minute.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 35th minute, Tuyisenge rounded off his marker after \nreceiving a perfectly weighted pass from Kenneth Muguna, but the \nRwandese’s shot missed target by a whisker.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brian Marita could have restored parity in the 37th minute but \nWere’s cross outpaced him before he forced a fine save from the keeper.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leopards almost equalized two minutes into the second half but \nWere’s well-curved free kick was deflected for a fruitless corner before\n Odhiambo pulled off a brilliant save to stop Marita’s free kick on the \nhour mark.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A minute later, Kipkirui capitalized on Said Tsuma’s defensive error to grab his double after being teed up by Tuyisenge.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jacques Tuyisenge, who had been an integral part of all the goals, grabbed one of his own by tapping in easily past an overwhelmed goalkeeper Ezekiel Owade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And just after the third goal, a section of frustrated Ingwe fans started uprooting seats, throwing them and empty bottles into the pitch forcing the referee to temporarily stop the game for five minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wayward pass from Joash Onyango in the last few minutes of the game saw Vincent Oburu intercept, before shooting straight home to sliver his team\u2019s consolation goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
