In a bid to stem the tide of hooliganism which has caused the abandonment of two matches this year and has given the club bad publicity, Gor Mahia club officials in conjunction with sponsors, Tuzo, have started a campaign to combat hooliganism.<\/p>\n

The club has also appealed to the Police to assist by arresting known hooligans. According to Chairman Ambrose Rachier, the club has identified 25 hooligans who caused abandonment of the opening day match against Rangers.<\/p>\n

Says Rachier, \u201cAs a club, we are limited in the ways with which we can deal with unruly fans. Other than identifying them and banning them from our matches, there is little else we can do. We urge the law enforcement officers to help us by charging them in a court of law.\u201d\u00a0 Usually, it\u2019s the club and ultimately the players that suffer when we get banned or fined over crowd trouble and we feel that if the transgressors are held to account individually, it will deter them because they will undertake the costs,\u201d he added. \u201cWe are determined not to let a few criminals tarnish our name and deter us from accomplishing our goal which is to champion\u00a0 the 2011 KPL. A true K\u2019ogalo fan would never do anything to jeopardize his team and we will weed out these hooligans who pose as our fans,\u201d added the enthusiastic chair.<\/p>\n

The club wants to educate fans on the damage that hooliganism does to the club. G48 , a security company, will train marshals on how to circumvent fan trouble before it starts. Other stakeholders such as KPL and Suipersport will also be consulted on the way forward. The chairman emphasized the need to sensitize the fans from the 123 branches across the country on the need to shun violence and accept match results as they unfold. Rachier emphasized the club\u2019s stance against hooliganism,<\/p>\n

Tuzo brand manager Rosemary Aloo said, \u201cWe would like to offer our continued support to Gor Mahia and stand with them on this endeavour. We believe there are many ways of venting out frustrations during matches but neither violence nor anti social behaviour is one of them. We understand this will be a process and it will take time but we have to start from somewhere to not only curb this vice but eradicate it all together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachier also affirmed their commitment in continuing in corporate social responsibility activities (CSR) as a way of giving back to the society, an activity they embarked on last year when they visited Loitoktok district hospital and engaged in other environmental cleaning activities.<\/p>\n

In an unprecedented move, The club will also train cheer-leaders in how to get fans to rally behind the team.<\/p>\n
