In action playing a defensive midfield role was David Owino.

Harambee stars took the lead in the 5th minute via a Dennis Oliech spot kick that resulted from a foul on Humphrey Mieno. Oliech was on target again 8 minutes later when he collected a cross from Francis Kahata and converted. Stars led 2-0 at halftime.

Libya piled pressure and camped in the stars half for long periods during the second half to no avail. Paul Were scored the third goal against the run of play in the 80th to seal the score.

Other Kogalo players Rama Salim, Paul Kiongera and Kevin Omondi started the game on the substitutes bench.

David Owino earning international experience at the defensive midfield position is a good thing as it provides Gor Mahia with options in an area where the team has no depth.

Despite being a friendly, it was an important win for Kenya as it will help their FIFA ranking. Kenya are ranked 127th whereas Libya are inexplicably ranked 47th in the world. A win over a highly ranked team should help Kenya.

It has also been reported that Belgian/Algerian coach Adel Amrouche will soon be taking over from James Nandwa as stars coach. However there has been no confirmation from FKF. MacDonald Mariga missed the game because according to him, FKF have not fully refunded him for the money he spent on air tickets previously.

Down memory lane

Kenya had never beaten Libya in the last four attempts. Libya won three and drew one. The last time Kenya beat Libya was 1983 when a goal from James Ouma “Jacaranda” gave Kenya a 1-0 win in an Olympic qualifier at City stadium. Current Gor Mahia assistant coach Bobby Ogolla played in that game as did fellow Gor Mahia defender Peter Otieno “Bassanga”.

Libya won the return leg, beating stars 2-0 in Tripoli. Ogolla who was the anchor of the stars defense in those days was sorely missed in that game as has been noted by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abbas. Some team-mates accused Abbas of having been bribed by the Libyans since he gave away two very easy goals. One of the goals was a backpass from Bassanga which Abbas mishandled. Abbas vehemently denied the accusation and at one point quit the national team before being prevailed upon to return.

Sserunkuma scores on Cranes debut

Gor Mahia striker Dan Ssserunkuma started his international career with a bang scoring Uganda’s second goal and providing the assist for the first goal in a friendly match against Rwanda in Kigali. The game ended 2-2. The first Rwanda goal was scored by Meddie Kagere who was once a target of Gor Mahia.

Kenya beat Libya 3-0 in a friendly match played in the Tunisian capital of Tunis on Wednesday evening.
