This comes at a time when many fans started to think that the duo would be offloaded during the mid season transfer window. But their performance of late has riveted the fans, media and the technical staff.

The 19 year old Gathu joined Gor Mahia after having played for Mt Kenya University. According to the Nation,One morning in June last year, Anthony Gathu travelled from his home in Thika to try his luck in achieving his dream of playing for Gor Mahia.

He borrowed bus fare to attend trials at the City Stadium. His first day was disappointing and coach Zdravko Logarusic told him he had no place at K’Ogalo. He pleaded for another chance. The following day he showed up and performed splendidly, the Croatian coach promptly signed him.

On Wednesday, Gathu’s superlative performance left no doubt that he has a great future ahead of him. “This boy has talent, he is still young and we need to take great care of him. He is future material for the national team,” said assistant coach John “Bobby” Ogolla to the Nation.

Should he continue his upward progression, he could end up being the midfield playmaker that Gor Mahia sorely needs. And once he develops and understanding with the likes of Sserunkuma, Lavatsa, Kiongera and Rama Salim, he could become the key assist man for the team.

Not to be left behind was Innocent Mutiso. During the pre-season, Logarusic appeared far from impressed with the new signing who had been a member of the Kenya under 23 team. Taking advantage of an opportunity that came about due to a rash of injuries, Mutiso acquited himself well against ENPPI on Saturday and picked up where he left off against Ulinzi on Wedensday.

Coach Logarusic was equally impressed by the duo. “I am particularly proud of Gathu and Mutiso, because they are young players and have both not been starting. However, they took up the opportunity and impressed everybody. It is a good thing when you see young players stepping up to control the game and we saw that yesterday.” Logarusic told supersport.

With Gor Mahia taking on league leaders KCB this Sunday at Kasarani, fans will be hoping that the duo can help pry open the stubborn KCB defence which has only conceded one goal in seven games and is the reason they are atop the league standings. This at a time when Kogalo have yet to find their scoring boots.

Innocent Mutiso and Anthony Gathu, two players who had until recently been starved of playing time, have been receiving plaudits

[1

post-2241","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
