The move follows an outcry from fans who insisted that the player who had served the club faithfully for many years should be given a soft landing. He stuck with the club even when it was in the doldrums.

It is a commendable move by the club especially when you consider that this club is not exactly swimming in financial resources. Back in the late 1980s, then club chairman Zack Mbori sponsored former captain Peter Otieno “Bassanga” for a coaching course in the United Kingdom. This is because the forward thinking Mbori correctly deduced that Bassanga had an aptitude and an interest in coaching. Mbori was correct because Bassanga later coached SoNy Sugar to their one and only league title and was once considered a candidate for the national team coach.

If “Awilo” has shown signs of potentially being a good coach. If he is creative and astute thinker of the game. If he takes a keen interest in tactics. Then Kogalo should strongly consider sponsoring him for a course preferably in Holland or elsewhere in Europe. If not then there must be a different position for him at the club. He has shown commitment for many years and it is the kind of commitment that ought to be rewarded whenever possible.

According to michezoafrika.com, the club Seceratary George Bwana said: “We have listened to the fans cry and have offered to retain Owino at the club. We will sponsor him to a coaching course should he be interested. We can also make him our scout or have him in the technical bench to share his vast experience. Those are just options but the bottom line is Owino is still part and parcel of Gor Mahia,”

The outpouring of support for Awilo is a far contrast to the treatment meteed out to him late last year when he was accosted by a group of fans. This was at a time when the club’s form was suffering a dip.

Awilo joined Kogalo in 2003 from Utalii. In 2007 He went to India to play for King Fisher. He returned in 2009. he was a first team regular for both club and national team until 2010 when he suffered an injury within two minutes of the start of a Harambee stars match. The sure footed left back had also been the primary penalty taker for both club and national team.

According to the story below from michezoafrika.com, Long serving skipper Julius Owino “Awilo” will be retained in some capacity at

[1

post-299","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
