Gor Mahia lost to Esperance de Tunis by a score of 0 to 5. In general, Gor Mahia played well in the first half. But conceding a goal on the stroke of halftime left Gor Mahia having to chase the game in the second half. This left them very open at the back and Esperance capitalized.<\/p>\n
Esperance came into the second half a more determined side. Youthful striker Haithem Jouni who replaced Yannick Djeng in the line-up did most of the damage scoring three goals.<\/p>\n
The second goal came about when he was left wide open at the far post. A decoy run saw Gor Mahia defenders focus on the central attacker leaving Haithem Jouni wide open. The cross was delivered perfectly to the far post and Jouni rose to tap the ball home.<\/p>\n
The third goal came after a through ball on the left flank reached an Esperance striker who had made a good run. He cut inside past the slipping David Owino, placed a precise ball right at the feet of Jouni who simply tapped home.<\/p>\n
Which brings us to another aspect of Gor Mahia: There was a lot of slipping and sliding amongst Gor Mahia players which means they did not have football boots that were appropriate for the surface.<\/p>\n
Another goal occurred when burly Camerounian makoun muscled his way into space, and shot towards goal. His shot was parried by David Juma. But it was met by two wide open Esperance players. Harrison Afful calmly slotted home the rebound. There was no Gor Mahia defender in sight because no one chased the rebound.<\/p>\n
The last goal was a typical breakaway goal that may have been offside. With Gor Mahia throwing everyone into attack, an Esperance attacker was left wide. The through ball to him was precise and placed him in good position for an easy goal.<\/p>\n
It would have been worse. The same scenario played out five minutes later but this time David Juma pulled off a spectacular save.<\/p>\n
Gor Mahia’s attempts in the second half came about via Kevin Omondi who cut inside from the left and fired goalwards. His shot was saved by the Esperance keeper. A well taken free-kick by Rama Salim seemed destined for the net but the alert Esperance keeper once again saved the day. In injury time, substitute Patrick Oboya took on a defender and beat him with a mazy step-over dribble. But his resulting shot went well wide.<\/p>\n
Dan Sserunkuma and George Odhiambo were for the most part marked out of the game. The ball never reached them as Gor Mahia could not make inroads in the final third of the field.<\/p>\n
