Blackberry scoring his first goal left fans elated. But it was not just the goal but the fact that he seems top be regaining his old form thus proving naysayers wrong. Blackberry has found a new lease of life since Frank Nuttall took over as coach.

Dan Sserunkuma just continues to find the net and as mentioned earlier, the most prolific Gor Mahia striker since Hezborn Omollo almost thirty years ago.

On Saturday Gor Mahia started with determination and attacked the City stars goal relentlessly. Blackberry’s effort in the 5th minute hit the cross bar with the City stars keeper well beaten. But it was City stars who found the net first, in the 29th minute, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. City stars defender Mark Ongwae handled the ball in the 32nd minute but the referee waved play on.

The opening goal came 10 minutes later when Sserunkuma converted a cross from Timothy Otieno. A minute later, Gor Mahia were awarded a penalty which Sserunkuma duly converted. The third goal came almost immediately. It came after a good interplay between Geoffrey Kizito and Godfrey Walusimbi. The latter found Blackberry with a good pass. Odhiambo’s shot bounced off a defender into the net for the third goal. Gor Mahia went into the breather leading 3-0.

City Stars defender Ongwae who was having nightmare evening conceded a penalty when he was judged to have pulled Haron Shakava. Sserunkuma stepped up to slot the penalty in the 56th minute. Nelson Marosowe of City stars was sent off for a second yellow in the 77th minute. City stars will be luck if John Amboko is not suspended for assaulting Haron Shakava. The consolation goal for City Stars finally came in the 82nd minute.

Coach Frank Nuttall was satsified after the game

“We started slowly but picked up towards the end of the first half. We have to keep on till the end,” he said.

City stars coach, Nigerian Robinson Ofwoko blamed the referee for his side’s loss

“We started slowly but picked up towards the end of the first half. We have to keep on till the end,” he said.

All in all, Gor Mahia looked fitter and sharper than they have recently. Perhaps the week long rest was a factor as was the fact that Nuttall finally had a long stretch in which to install his system.

Gor Mahia have now opened a 5 point lead over Sofapaka who are away to SoNy Sugar on Sunday.

City Stars Starting XI: Fredrick Majani, Oscar Mbugua, John Amboko, Mark Ongwae 2 David Otieno 12 Nelson Marasowe , Dennis Okoth, Lawrence Kasadha, Ismail Kabugu (74’ Victor Ashinga) , Kevin Ochieng (47’ Raymond Omondi) , George Abege (64’ Kevin Oliech).

Unused Subs: 1 Kevin Omondi (GK), 8 Calvin Masawa, 13 Collins Okumu, 7 Mike Simiyu,

Gor Mahia Starting XI: Jerim Onyango. , Musa Mohammed. Harun Shakava. David Owino. Kevin Oluoch. Godfrey Walusimbi. Baba Kizito. Timothy Otieno (81’ Eric Ochieng) Collins Okoth. George Odhiambo. Dan Sserunkuma (83’ Arthur Ssemazzi)

Unused substitutes: 16.
