Gor Mahia fans could not have hoped for a worse buildup as Kogalo were hammered 3-0 in an international friendly match against Power Dynamos of Zambia.

And Gor Mahia have themselves largely to blame as they missed out on scoring chances including two penalties. The first one came midway through the first half when the referee awarded Gor Mahia a penalty following a handball. But Timothy Otieno saw his attempt saved by Joel Kanyiba the Dyanamos goalkeeper.

Dyanamos were then presented with their own penalty when Collins Okoth fouled a Zambia player in the penalty box. Kennedy Mudenda made no mistake from the spot and the Zambians went into half time leading 1-0 and buoyed by their goal.

As the second half started, Gor Mahia poured forward in search of an equalizer. The Zambians capitalized with a counter attack in the 55th minute to make it 2-0 via Richard Kasonde. The goal was similar to the first one as Gor Mahia defended high and the Zambians capitalized.

Gor Mahia were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute. Michael Olunga stepped forward to take it and blasted it over the goals in a manner similar to a rugby player kicking a rugby penalty.

Luka Lungu sealed the score in the 8oth minute.

It was the second succesive time that Gor Mahia has lost 3-0 in an international friendly. They went down by a similar score against Simba in September of 2014.

The strikeforce was blunt as expected. But the defence has not gelled and were ruthlessly exposed by the efficient Zambians. Gor Mahia defence appears to be attempting to play a high line which requires a lot of coordination and familiarity between defenders. A team that has practised how to exploit a high line will easily slice open your defence unless the high-line is well coordinated. And that takes time. Fans will remember how Gor Mahia fielded a completely new team against Ferroviario of Maputo in 2012. On that occassion, lack of coordination in defence also cost Gor Mahia three goals.

It should also concern Nuttall that players cannot take penalties under pressure. Continental events often end in penalty shootouts.

The good news is that a high calibre friendly has exposed Gor Mahia’s weaknesses before the Madagascans arrived. The onus now on the Gor Mahia technical bench to rectify this situation.

Line-up : Jerim Onyango, Musa Mohammed, Benard Odhiambo (Dirkir Glay), Haroun Shakava, Kevin Oluoch, Khalid Aucho, Ronald Omino, Collins Okoth, George Odhiambo, Michael Olunga, Timothy Otieno

It was Gor Mahia’s first real test as they prepare for the 2015 Africa Champions league.
