Gor Mahia are the 2015 DSTV Super cup champions after beating Sofapaka 2-1.<\/p>\n
Kogalo started with Boniface Oluoch in goal in place of the injured captain Jerim Onyango. Making a surprise return was Ugandan defender\/midfiielder Geoffrey Walusimbi who had been missing from recent friendlies and was even rumoured to be attending trials overseas.<\/p>\n
Returnee Ali Abondo scored the match opener after he was put through by Khalid Aucho. Gor Mahia could have scored more goals in the first half as they created numerous chances. But new signing Mike Olunga in particular was wasteful, spurning chance after chance.<\/p>\n
But Olunga was instrumental in the second goal. He was brought down during a marauding run into the box. Ali Abondo scored the resulting penalty to put Gor Mahia up 2-0.<\/p>\n
Sofapaka then came back forcefully into the match searching for a goal that would reduce the arrears. The goal came when Innocent Wafula turned the ball into his own net following an attempted clearance.<\/p>\n
Coach Frank Nuttall was full of praise for his charges.<\/p>\n
“My players did not disappoint today (Wednesday). They played according to instructions and contained Sofapaka, who had resorted to long balls to penetrate our back four. We could have been punished had we insisted on falling to their plans but we maintained our own game and that made the difference.<\/p>\n
“As always, the boys were able to raise their game. We performed better than we did in pre-season and showed that the boys are always able to raise their game when it matters most.” he said to goal.com<\/p>\n
Ali Abondo was happy with the teams performance.<\/p>\n
“This was an important win for us considering that it is the first trophy of the season,” he said to goal<\/p>\n
It was a performance that will make Gor Mahia fans happy as they have been pressing the panic buttons after losses to Bandari and Power Dynamos and below par performances against sides like Bidco.<\/p>\n
