Going into the match against Sony Sugar, the league champions needed just a point to be confirmed champions and instead picked three to send their tally to 66.

After being held to a barren draw by Ulinzi Stars on Sunday in a move that delayed their coronation, Gor Mahia were not taking any chances on Wednesday and started pushing for the crucial goal right from the first whistle. Coach Frank Nuttall preferred to start George Odhiambo and Ali Abondo, who have been missing of late in his starting line-up.

Odhiambo popularly known as ‘Blackberry’ made his first contribution in the 5th minute sneaking inside the Sony Sugar backline but was denied by Allan Owiny in goal. The pressure continued and Godfrey Walusimbi’s well taken cross was headed out.
Then the stadium was plunged into darkness for about nine minutes as the engineers fought frantically to restore power. Impatient fans turned on lights on their mobile phones with no one wanting to go home. When play resumed, Gor Mahia continued to control the proceedings with Ali Abondo’s shot going just wide.

Sony Sugar had their moment to come into the match in the 25th minute with Marwa Chamberi testing Boniface Oluoch with a long cross that however, did not bother the calm goalkeeper. On the other side of the pitch, there was worry from Gor Mahia fans when top striker Michael Olunga came down awkwardly as he tried to dispossess Sony Sugar’s Alfred Onyango and needed treatment to come back into the match.

The opening goal finally came in the 39th minute from Innocent Wafula, who found himself at the end of a great move initiated by Meddie Kagere and Godfrey Walusimbi. Gor Mahia were unrelenting even as the second half kicked-off keeping Olwiny in Sony’s goal busy. The Sony Sugar goalkeeper stretched well to deny Olunga in the 50th minute.

From the hour mark the sugar millers looked the more determined side with Marwa Chamberi causing Gor Mahia problems on the flanks but he could only get a fruitless corner for all his efforts. But Gor Mahia still had better possessions and time and again burst upfront threatening to score. On one such occasion, Innocent Wafula’s goal bound shot was put out by Olwiny for a fruitless corner.

Gor Mahia rested George Odhiambo for Enock Agwanda and Khalid Aucho for Collins Okoth but the title was already won.

Gor Mahia have won the 2015 Kenya Premier League with four games to spare after beating SoNy Sugar 1-0 in

[1
343,185
post-7399","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","tag-2015-kenya-premier-league","tag-gor-mahia-vs-sony-sugar
["GET
